Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the framework of the International Cavitation Erosion Test (ICET), 119 vibratory cavitation erosion tests were performed. Seventy of these tests were with vibrating specimens (VRV), and forty-nine with stationary specimens (VRS). From these tests, twenty tests of each type were chosen for this study. VRV tests are covered by ASTM G32-10, whereas for VRS, no standard has yet been published. This anomaly stems from the difficulties encountered in both testing and evaluating of VRS tests. All forty cavitation erosion-time curves were analyzed by the Transient Response for Erosion (TRE) method. For each curve, all three parameters were determined, namely: time lag (TL), time constant (?), and the asymptotic value of the mean depth of erosion, mean depth of erosion (MDE) MDEMAX. These parameters were further applied to calculate the scatter of test results as obtained from various specimens tested under identical conditions. This method enables the determination of the absolute and relative scatter values at any time value along the test. Finally, several guidelines are specified for preparation of a future VRS standard.

It is suggested by the author that the cumulative mass loss-time curve test results can be represented accurately by the Weibull cumulative distribution function. This model was verified for 26 tests of nine metals. Among these metals is Ni 200, which is a standard reference material for erosion tests. This model allows treating the results of vibratory cavitation erosion tests analytically, thereby obtaining invaluable information from the test data.

Book excerpt: A modification of the ASTM Vibratory Cavitation Erosion Test (G 32-77) is proposed for the evaluation of a cooling system corrosion inhibitor's ability to reduce the deterioration of the water-side of diesel engine cylinder liners. The procedure combines the effects of cavitation and corrosion, and, therefore, better simulates the pitting attack on cast iron cylinder liners. Results from the modified test correlate well with laboratory engine results and field experience. Further areas of investigation are suggested, although it is recommended that the general test procedure be considered for adoption as an ASTM test method for diesel engine coolant corrosion inhibitors.

Book excerpt: Cavitation erosion of 1100-0 and 2024-T-4 aluminum, 1018 carbon steel, 316 stainless steel, and 3% carbon cast iron was measured in tap water by vibratory horn at 200-kPa (2-bar) suppression pressure, at various temperatures and amplitudes. Erosion rate (MDPR) and incubation period (IP) were computed according both to total specimen area and to actual area eroded. Maximum damage depth penetration rate DmPR was also measured. Actual eroded area and maximum damage depth penetration rate are also presented. These are of substantial practical interest, since maximum damage depth Dm is often the best criterion to indicate failure. Incubation period IP is also considered to have more precise meaning if calculated according to actual eroded area. Temperature effects upon MDPR are reported. According to the test data at 200-kPa (2-bar) psv (where psv = p - pv, where p = static pressure and pv = vapor pressure) as well as the previous data at 100-kPa (1-bar) psv and some pertinent literature, MDPRmax occurs in the range 60 to 70°C (140 to 160°F). A new nondimensional damage depth parameter C = Dm/MDP, where MDP is the mean depth of penetration, has been defined. C versus horn amplitude is found to be an approximately exponential function for the ferrous alloys, but insufficient data is yet available to define similar trends for the aluminums. Scanning electron microscope photomicrographs of eroded surfaces of five materials tested show the pitted honeycombed surfaces, somewhat different for the different materials.

An improved version of this test has been devised at the University of Strathclyde, Glasgow, and subsequently further developed at the National Engineering Laboratory, East Kilbride.
