Book excerpt: The use of constrained viscoelastic layer damping treatments has recently been found to be effective in reducing unwanted resonant vibrations in structures. The proper design of such damping treatments has been difficult, however, since closed form equations to describe system behavior can only be used for simple beams and plates. In addition, finite element analysis has been difficult since the material properties of viscoelastic materials show a marked dependence on frequency and temperature, resulting in the need to run an excessive number of finite element analyses for each design a proper constrained viscoelastic layer damping treatment for a test structure consisting of two concentric cylinders connected by four vanes. This book was released on 1999-05-21 with total page 383 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The elegance and logic of the superposition method have made it a highly attractive analytical procedure for obtaining accurate mathematical solutions to plate vibration problems. Its applicability to vast families of these problems, ranging from the dynamic behaviour of isotropic and orthotropic plates to laminated plate behaviour, is well demonstrated in the technical literature. Now, at last, a comprehensive book is made available to those who wish to use this powerful analytical technique. Beginning with a thorough and lucid introduction to the superposition method as it applies to free vibration of thin isotropic rectangular plates, with all combinations of classical boundary conditions, the book describes procedures for handling vast families of realistic practical plate vibration problems. These include orthotropic plates, point-supported plates, plates resting on elastic edge supports, plates with in-plane forces, buckling of plates, etc. The reader is subsequently introduced to utilization of the superposition method for the analysis of thick Mindlin plates as well as transverse-shear-deformable laminated plates. Particular emphasis is placed on plate free vibration analysis, with a list of pertinent publications attached to each chapter. The superposition method is unique in that all solutions obtained satisfy the governing differential equations exactly throughout the entire domain of the plate. The boundary conditions are satisfied to any desired degree of accuracy.Despite the attractive features of this analytical method, many researchers and designers have access only to published papers related to particular problems. With this new book, they have for the first time a comprehensive, illustrated description of the means of exploiting the superposition method. They will be able to prepare their own computer schemes and analyse any plate vibration problem of interest.

The book begins with two chapters that introduce the fundamentals of both vibration and shock damping. The next part of the book presents in-depth coverage of polymeric materials for vibration damping, including viscoelastic properties, design of polymer systems, and modes and applications. Finally, measurement techniques are discussed in detail. Throughout the book, the different perspectives of materials and engineering are considered, and both mathematical and conceptual approaches are used. This is an essential resource for all those looking to understand the application of polymers for vibration damping, including researchers, scientists and advanced students in polymer science, plastics engineering, materials science and mechanical engineering, as well as engineers and R&D personnel in the automotive, marine, defense and construction industries. Equips the reader with a complete, fundamental understanding of vibration and shock damping Explains the viscoelastic properties, design and applications of polymeric materials for vibration damping applications Includes cutting-edge research on the use of polymers for advanced civil and defense applications

Winter Annual Meeting and published by . This book was released on 1989 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: An analytical-type solution is developed for the free vibration analysis of rectangular plates with uniform elastic edge support symmetrically distributed about the plate central axes. Both linear elastic rotational and translational support are considered to act simultaneously. Rapid convergence is encountered. Because of the symmetry of the problem, the free vibration modes fall into three distinct families. Eigenvalues are tabulated for the first four modes of vibration of a square plate with identical stiffnesses on each edge and with various ratios of translational to rotational stiffnesses. This represents, to the author's knowledge, the first comprehensive treatment of this problem.
