Book Synopsis Cystic Fibrosis in Primary Care by : Douglas Lewis, MD, FAAFP
Download or read book Cystic Fibrosis in Primary Care written by Douglas Lewis, MD, FAAFP and published by Springer Nature. This book was released on 2020-01-28 with total page 184 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Cystic fibrosis is a disease that affects the entire body. It tends to be thought of as primarily a pulmonary disease since pulmonary decline is the main factor in early mortality. Because of the multi-system nature of the disease, a better understanding of cystic fibrosis expands the family physician's understanding of subjects ranging from genetics to pulmonary function to nutrition to colon transport to hydration to electrolyte management. The primary care philosophy is unique in that it always considers how a narrow problem can affect an individual globally. Cystic Fibrosis care can often feel fractured to patients as they are sent to multiple specialists to deal with problems outside of the comfort level of a prior or current specialist. With a broad medical philosophy, care is more inclusive as clinicians can manage topics such as diabetes and preventive care without multiple referrals and additional appointments. Family physicians are well-positioned and well-qualified to competently meet many of the care needs of those with cystic fibrosis. This book is edited by a family medicine physician who has specialist level experience with the disease. It opens with a background on cystic fibrosis foundations and centers to familiarize the reader. The next chapter gives a basic overview of the disease. Each of the subsequent chapters provide a comprehensive look at how cystic fibrosis affects other areas of the body that the primary care physician should be familiar with. Major components of cystic fibrosis such as physiology, spirometry, inflammation, airway clearance, chronic infection, cystic fibrosis related diabetes and pancreatic insufficiency, among others, are thoroughly explained. Written by experts in the field, Cystic Fibrosis in Primary Care appeals to all family physicians as well as specialists, residents, medical students physician assistants and nurse practitioners alike.

Any patient with diabetes mellitus or health care professional using the information presented by these experts would be well prepared to manage this disease process" --Gloria K. Twilley, Lieutenant Colonel United States Air Force Nurse Corps The sixth edition of Management of Diabetes Mellitus fully reorganizes and expands upon the previous editions. This edition also offers clear and concise explanations of the disease process, newly revised guidelines for the use of complementary and alternative therapies, and a guide for developing an educational program. Guthrie and Guthrie also stress the importance of self-management of diabetes, as much of this edition is dedicated to educating the diabetic patient on how to provide self-care, and control both acute and chronic complications of the disease. For the convenience of practitioners and diabetic patients themselves, this book contains reproducible forms, protocols, and guides that can be used for managing diabetes, including: Nutrition questionnaires Meal patterns comparing exchanges Carb Counting and Calorie Points Sample Calorie Point Distributions Exercise Log Intake Assessment Guide Clinical Practice Recommendations A guide to the "pattern approach"

Book Synopsis The Changing Hospital Industry by : David M. Cutler
Download or read book The Changing Hospital Industry written by David M. Cutler and published by University of Chicago Press. This book was released on 2007-12-01 with total page 382 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In recent years, the hospital industry has been undergoing massive change and reorganization with technological innovations and the spread of managed care. As a result, the total number of hospitals countrywide has been declining, and a growing number of not-for-profit hospitals have converted to for-profit status. These changes raise two fundamental questions: What determines a hospital's choice of for-profit or not-for-profit organizational form? And how does that form affect patients and society? This timely volume provides a factual basis for discussing for-profit versus not-for-profit ownership of hospitals and gives a first look at the evidence about new and important issues in the hospital industry. The Changing Hospital Industry: Comparing Not-for-Profit and For-Profit Institutions will have significant implications for public-policy reforms in this vital industry and will be of great interest to scholars in the fields of health economics, public finance, hospital organization, and management; and to health services researchers.

But soon she becomes a national media sensation when “the Falling Woman,” as the press dubs her, is said to have been taken to a Wichita hospital—and then to have disappeared without a trace. As a dedicated National Transportation Safety Board agent joins the search for clues, he becomes drawn into the woman’s moving and personal fight to keep secret the story of her survival, even from her own family, and possibly at risk to his own career.
