Book excerpt: “What to read after A Court of Thorns and Roses! Full of twists you’ll never see coming!” –UppercaseYA I’ve never been a stranger to the darkness. But when darkness comes knocking and looks that good, who wouldn’t invite him in? Draven is mysterious, evasive, and hot as sin. The only thing more infuriating than his silence is how obnoxious he is every time he does open his mouth. But when a group of strangers attacks me and he fights back—causing them to vanish into a cloud of black dust—I know Draven is more than he seems. Now I know the truth. There’s a veil separating the world I know from a world of demons living all around us. Turns out, good and evil are just words. Some of the demons don’t fall into either category. And I’m realizing just how easily I fit in among the ancient warlocks, the divine soldiers, and the twisted supernaturals... There’s so much more to me and my past that I don’t know—let alone what I am truly capable of. So when all signs point to me having the ability to unleash Hell on earth? I’ll have to decide if I want to do the world a solid and save it...or give it one hell of a makeover. The Ember of Night series is best enjoyed in order. Book Synopsis Veiled Empire by : Douglas T. Northrop
Download or read book Veiled Empire written by Douglas T. Northrop and published by Cornell University Press. This book was released on 2016-06-08 with total page 420 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Drawing on extensive research in the archives of Russia and Uzbekistan, Douglas Northrop here reconstructs the turbulent history of a Soviet campaign that sought to end the seclusion of Muslim women. In Uzbekistan it focused above all on a massive effort to eliminate the heavy horsehair-and-cotton veils worn by many women and girls. This campaign against the veil was, in Northrop's view, emblematic of the larger Soviet attempt to bring the proletarian revolution to Muslim Central Asia, a region Bolsheviks saw as primitive and backward. The Soviets focused on women and the family in an effort to forge a new, "liberated" social order. This unveiling campaign, however, took place in the context of a half-century of Russian colonization and the long-standing suspicion of rural Muslim peasants toward an urban, colonial state. Widespread resistance to the idea of unveiling quickly appeared and developed into a broader anti-Soviet animosity among Uzbeks of both sexes. Over the next quarter-century a bitter and often violent confrontation ensued, with battles being waged over indigenous practices of veiling and seclusion.New local and national identities coalesced around these very practices that had been placed under attack. Veils became powerful anticolonial symbols for the Uzbek nation as well as important markers of Muslim propriety. Bolshevik leaders, who had seen this campaign as an excellent way to enlist allies while proving their own European credentials as enlightened reformers, thus inadvertently strengthened the seclusion of Uzbek women—precisely the reverse of what they set out to do. Northrop's fascinating and evocative book shows both the fluidity of Central Asian cultural practices and the real limits that existed on Stalinist authority, even during the ostensibly totalitarian 1930s.

Not realizing he feels a similar attraction, she never imagines Rashid will seek out her performances; he is the last person she expects to see when her dance company travels to Italy. Their reunion takes an even more unexpected turn when they’re both drugged and kidnapped. Although they overcome their abductors, it leaves them stranded in North Africa. For her own safety, Lucia agrees to marry Rashid, at least for the time being. As she recovers at his family compound in Morocco, reeling from their brush with danger, she struggles to fit into a culture she knows nothing about—and to deal with her growing feelings for Rashid. At the same time, at his secret office there, Rashid is developing a dramatic leap forward in artificial intelligence combined with virtual reality. He finds himself plunged into a fight for control of his work against powerful international forces, and caught in the middle, Lucia is swept into that battle . . . “A terrific novel, ripping a path from today’s headlines to tomorrow’s realities.” —Robert J. Sawyer, Nebula Award–winning author

Book Synopsis Pirouetting Spheres by : Cynthia Barnes
Download or read book Pirouetting Spheres written by Cynthia Barnes and published by iUniverse. This book was released on 2001-04 with total page 274 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Declaring that she cannot neglect the brilliant anthropology of the Homo sapiens and his Celestial Orientations, she earnestly reflects upon the piano composition she had been most thankful to share at the Rosicrucian Order during the '70s in San Jose, California. Due to immense hardship, however, she regrets that she was unable to attend a meeting at which she was to meet Carl Sagan. "Freewill is an underlying idealism of common convention that disadvantaged and victimized creatures are incapable of maintaining. Controlling our environment poses insurmountable limits." The thematic content of Pirouetting Spheres reflects her association with the Rosicrucian Order, the San Jose Egyptian Museum bearing her profound sentiment. "I am from such a broken home that I was truly ashamed-pathetically incapable of extending rightful hospitality to those extending invaluable moral support. I hereby reflect upon the struggles of mortal man." She maintains that accurate responses are not always possible during moments too typical and fleeting. "I hope this poetry will encourage my fellow brothers and sisters to seek Justice and Fulfillment through the History of Civil Code and Astral Appeal."
