Book excerpt: Excerpt from Seeds of Woody Plants in the United States Trees and shrubs also are planted to improve the habitat of wildlife and to protect the soil from erosion by wind or water. In urban areas, planting is done to improve the environment of man by ameliorating the effects of heat, wind, dust, and noise; and by screening or beautifying the urban landscape. A knowledge of woody plant seeds is essential for producing the seed lings needed in all of these applications. The information in this handbook is presented in two parts. An understanding of the principles and general methods presented in Part 1 will facilitate effective use of the detailed informa tion in Part 2. Part 1 includes a chapter on seed biology followed by 7 chapters on the principles and general methods of producing, handling. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Vegetable Gardening in Alaska The Petrowski turnip deserves to be described somewhat in detail. The seed was introduced from northern Europe into Alaska through the Office of Foreign Seed and Plant Introduction, United States Department of Agriculture. The seed was first grown at the Sitka station in 1906 and designated Petrowski No. 19554. It proved to be so superior to other varieties that the seed has been grown and distributed by the stations for many years. In addition to its fine table qualities, the Petrowski turnip is comparatively free from root maggot attack. The variety has a flat root with a concavity in the bottom from which a single slender root emerges. The root is medium in size, about 4 to 6 inches in diameter, is yellow, and has a tough skin. The true type is perfectly symmetrical in Shape and has no side roots, and the leaves are small and Spread horizontally on the ground. The variety does not keep well; after a few months in storage it becomes dry and pithy. Settlers in Alaska have with practical unanimity pronounced the Petrowski the best turnip for the far north. Rutabagas are a variety of turnip. They require a longer growing season and can not be grown successfully as far north as can the turnip: (see p. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Handbook of Native Woody Plants of the United States As every seil conservationist knows, there is a very definite rela tion between the density of the plant cover on the $011, the amount of $011 lost through eros10n, and the productivity of that soil. These three func tions vary with each other in a regular and direct manner, and there is no reason to believe that they have not always done so. 8011 is partly formed by vegetation, and vegetation is in good part a product of the seil. Taking the hint from our observation of natural conditions, we must expect to direct our efforts at erosion control toward revegetation, Since it is known that erosion starts With the destruction of the plant cover, and that the kind and density of vegetation is more important in influencing run-off and erosion than is steepness of slope or intensity of rainfall.
