An initial site visit was conducted to observe and record the range of compositional and environmental variation within the park. These data were then used to identify representative stands where twenty-three vegetation plots were sampled. Vegetation plots included quantitative and qualitative data on vegetation composition and structure as well as environmental characteristics. Plot data collected at Thomas Stone National Historic Site were added to a larger data set collected at nearby National Park System units of the National Capital Region and analyzed using an array of multivariate techniques to produce the vegetation classification.

The diversity and distribution of vegetation associations is primarily a result of the following four factors: 1) the geologic history of the region, especially the effect of glaciation; 2) the park's position on the northeastern U.S. coastal plain within a temperate climate; 3) proximity to Long Island Sound and maritime ecological processes, such as diurnal tides, storm overwash, salt spray, and high winds; and 4) the park's setting within a suburban landscape with a moderately intensive human land use history, along with its associated problems, such as invasive species, fragmentation, habitat loss, and pollution.

In addition, four anthropogenic vegetation types occurred; one successional forest and three non-forested types (two in mowed upland fields, and one herbaceous wetland seep). Each of these is described in detail in this report.
