Book Synopsis Which Way Social Justice in Mathematics Education? by : Leone Burton
Download or read book Which Way Social Justice in Mathematics Education? written by Leone Burton and published by Bloomsbury Publishing USA. This book was released on 2003-02-28 with total page 342 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This contributed volume explores equity and social justice within the field of mathematics education. In part one, Helga Jungwirth's introductory chapter provides a strong theoretical overview that is based in actual classroom behaviors and a typology that classifies the various interpretations found within this volume. Also in part one, Laurie Hart discusses developments in equity research in the United States. Part two focuses on results of studies about social justice and their impact on learning in mathematics classrooms in various parts of the world. For example, in a chapter on Peru, social justice does not just encompass gender, but also inequalities in opportunities to learn, such as problems of resources, living and social conditions, communal demands and language needs. And, part three focuses on computers as a resource to mathematics teaching. The contributors raise several important social justice issues which have previously remained unresearched. Although there are a number of chapters specifically dealing with gender, many of the authors use one of the following strategies: their gender-specific questions are set in a wider socio-cultural context, they challenge what have threatened to become false orthodoxies, or they raise other important issues. These other issues include the meaning of democratic citizenship for mathematics classrooms, the links between parents and children learning mathematics, and the preconceptions of some teachers of underprivileged students in Australia. Other chapters explore different forms of classroom communication, participation, and assessment. The pieces on computers state that there is still not enough research to conclude whether computers in the mathematics classrooms are supportive of, or detrimental to, the learning of all students. The one thing on which every author in this volume does agree is that social justice in mathematics education has still not been attained, but that we must strive toward it to improve educational practices and society in general.

Book Synopsis Second Handbook of Research on Mathematics Teaching and Learning by : Frank K. Lester
Download or read book Second Handbook of Research on Mathematics Teaching and Learning written by Frank K. Lester and published by Information Age Publishing. This book was released on 2007 with total page 722 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: An update to the original 1992 publication, this two-volume set unites current research to provide new conceptualizations of research problems, and to suggest possible research programs to move the field forward. In studying the existing research, the authors found that the community has maintained its focus on problems of learning, teaching, teacher education, assessment, technology, and social and cultural aspects of mathematics education, while some new areas of interest have emerged or been expanded. This set allows educators to step back and look at each of these areas to see where mathematics education research has been and where it should be going to enable the field to answer the questions about education that practitioners, policy makers, and politicians are asking.
Book Synopsis Cases of Assessment in Mathematics Education by : M. Niss
Download or read book Cases of Assessment in Mathematics Education written by M. Niss and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 1992-12-31 with total page 236 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The present book, Cases of Assessment in Mathematics Education, is one of two studies resulting from an ICMI Study Conference on Assessment in Mathematics Education and Its Effects. The book which is published in the series of ICMI Studies under the general editorship of the President and Secretary of ICMI is closely related to another study resulting from the same conference: Investigations into Assessment in Mathematics Education (Niss, 1992). The two books, although originating from the same sources and having the same editor, emphasize different aspects of assessment in mathematics education and can be read independently of one another. While the present book is devoted to presenting and discussing cases of assessment that are actually implemented, the other study attempts to critically analyze general and principal aspects of assessment. Naturally, the content of either book is enriched by the materials and perspectives provided by the other one. In order to put this book and its background into context, the nature and scope of the ICMI studies are outlined briefly below.
