Book excerpt: Vasculitis is a primary phenomenon in autoimmune diseases such as polyarteritis nodosa, Wegener’s granulomatosis, Churg–Strauss syndrome, microscopic polyangiitis, and essential mixed cryoglobulinemia. As a secondary feature vasculitis may complicate, for example, connective tissue diseases, infections, malignancies, and diabetes. Vasculitic neuropathy is a consequence of destruction of the vessel wall and occlusion of the vessel lumen of small epineurial arteries. Sometimes patients present with nonsystemic vasculitic neuropathy, i.e., vasculitis limited to peripheral nerves and muscles with no evidence of further systemic involvement. Treatment with corticosteroids, sometimes in combination with other immunosuppressants, is required to control the inflammatory process and prevent further ischemic nerve damage.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Systemic autoimmune diseases can affect both the central and peripheral nervous systems in a myriad of ways and through a heterogeneous number of mechanisms leading to many different clinical manifestations. As a result, neurological complications of these disorders can result in significant morbidity and mortality. Advances in the diagnosis, laboratory investigations, and management of these conditions has placed an increasing burden on the practicing clinician to correctly assess and treat these patients. This volume of the Handbook of the Systemic Autoimmune Diseases will help the clinician and researcher better understand the current concepts of nervous system involvement from systemic autoimmune disorders, recognize current approaches to diagnosis and treatment, current controversies, and areas that need significant research efforts. It is believed that providing this approach in a single volume will facilitate its use as a frequent resource for all those caring for or investigating these patients and their diseases. Each chapter follows a consistent outline to provide the reader with important and useful information in an easy-to-navigate manner and is also liberally referenced to provide more primary source material for further consideration. The standardized approach to each chapter will allow the reader to be able to compare and contrast more efficiently the neurological complications of the autoimmune diseases discussed.

Book excerpt: Vasculitides are a heterogeneous group of disorders epitomized by vascular inflammation so severe that it can result in multiple organ failure and even death if unrecognized and therefore untreated. With the recognition that vasculitides affect populations of patients around the world and in every nationality and walk of life, from childhood to older age, there is a demand for clear, concise and reliable information regarding the epidemiology, pathogenesis, clinical presentation, laboratory evaluation and management of these disorders. The Vasculitides, edited by David S. Younger MD, Associated Clinical Professor of Neurology and Public Health at the New York University School of Medicine, combines experts in the medical fields from North America and diverse European nations into a single book. Derived from the 16th International Vasculitis and ANCA Workshop, the book is endorsed by organizers of the United Kingdom and Ireland Vasculitis Societies where it will make its official professional debut. This two-volume book, encyclopedic in content, is presented in a two-volume set equally divided into General Considerations and Systemic Vasculitides, followed by Vasculitis of the Nervous System, Treatment, and an Epilogue containing a tribute to Loic Guillevin, Past-President of the International Vasculitis and ANCA Workshop. It is anticipated that physicians and researchers in all specialties and pediatricians and internists alike who consider vasculitis in their work will find this book to be an invaluable asset.

Book excerpt: This volume, written by well-known experts in the field, covers all aspects of Anti-Neutrophil Cytoplasmic Antibody (ANCA) Associated Vasculitis (AAV). The expression refers to a group of diseases, characterized by destruction and inflammation of small vessels. The clinical signs vary and affect several organs, such as the kidney, lung, skin, nervous system and others. The opening chapters give some historical hints, explain the genetic basis of the disease and provide insights into the pathogenesis derived from recent experimental studies and guides the reader through classification and nomenclature. A large part of the book is then devoted to a detailed description of the specific related diseases and their clinical presentations, the disease course, and potential complications. The advice regarding treatment is based on the best currently available evidence in this constantly evolving area. The book is part of Springer’s series Rare Diseases of the Immune System, which presents recently acquired knowledge on pathogenesis, diagnosis, and therapy with the aim of promoting a more holistic approach to these conditions. AAVs are systemic autoimmune diseases of unknown cause that affect small (to medium) sized blood vessels. They include granulomatosis with polyangiitis (formerly Wegener's granulomatosis), microscopic polyangiitis, and eosinophilic granulomatosis with polyangiitis (formerly Churg–Strauss syndrome). This volume will be an invaluable source of up-to-date information for all practitioners involved in the care of patients with these diseases.

Book excerpt: Systemic and nervous system vasculitides are a heterogeneous group of related disorders, each characterized by vascular inflammation such that they have the potential to cause serious morbidity and mortality if unrecognized and therefore untreated. Systemic vasculitis affect all populations and every nationality and walk-of-life, from childhood to older age. The first edition of The Vasculitides, published in 2014, met the urgent need for a clear, concise, and reliable textbook regarding the epidemiology, pathogenesis, clinical presentation, laboratory evaluation and management of these disorders, assembling participants of the 16th International Vasculitis and ANCA Workshop in Paris, France. Five years later, two subsequent meetings have taken place in London and Tokyo. Participants of the 19th International Vasculitis & ANCA Workshop will gather in April 2019 at the University of Pennsylvania for an exceptional venue to share translational scientific discoveries, data from clinical trials, and advances in the clinical assessment, pathophysiology, genetic biomarkers, standard-of-care, and novel therapies of vasculitis. The Workshop participants regathered to update the The Vasculitides, producing an even more cutting-edge two-volume set of books. This is the second book in the set, covering vasculitis of the nervous system and treatments.

This is a completely revised and updated sixth edition of the highly respected standard for stroke diagnosis and treatment. Dr James Toole has stayed on as a consultant for the text, and Drs E. Steve Roach, Kerstin Bettermann, and Jose Biller have reworked Dr Toole's book to include chapters on genetics, pregnancy-related stroke, and acute treatments. The practical focus of the book has not changed, retaining its emphasis on bedside diagnosis and treatment. Easily accessible both for stroke specialists and residents, the sixth edition has been modernized to keep pace with the rapid expansion of knowledge in stroke care and includes evidence-based recommendations, the latest technology and imaging, and risk factors. The text is supplemented with more than 200 images, many in color.
