Book excerpt: The Olympic Peninsula. This remarkable and isolated corner of Washington State is a land where snowy peaks tumble down to a mist-shrouded coast and majestic rainfores lies only 34 miles from dry oak savanna. Within its borders grows a remarkably diverse flora, with nearly the same number of vascular plants as the British Islesan area 30 times larger. Rugged and remote, the Olympic Peninsula is a place where naturalists can still experience the thrill of discovering aspecies previously unknown to the area. This book is the first comprehensive inventory of the Peninsula's flora, bringing together the results of nearly a century of botanical explorations by the authors. With it's inclusion of recent changes in plant names, this text is also a crucial taxonomic reference. It is an essential tool for anyone involved in the study, restoration, preservation, or enjoyment of native plants and their habitats on the Olympic Peninsula.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: * The first comprehensive field guide to the San Juans * Also covers the Gulf Islands and southern Vancouver Island * Includes an annotated checklist of all vascular plants recorded for San Juan County Washington's jewel-like San Juan Islands, outdoor playground for both foot-and water-borne visitors, are also a joy and curiosity for the flower and plant lover, both amateur and professional. On these hilly, rocky islands, wild plants appear that would seem more properly to belong in the desert areas of eastern Washington, while other plants, common as grass in the western part of the state, are strangely absent from the Islands. This authoritative field guide, illustrates and describes more than 190 species of wildflowers, shrubs, trees and weeds that occur commonly throughout the Islands as well as the nearby Gulf Islands and southern Vancouver Island, Canada. The plant descriptions are divided by habitats-meadows, open rocky outcrops, woodlands, maritime, fresh water, disturbed sites, Mt. Constitution -- under which they are listed by type, then color. The text also includes information on how the climate, topography and geology of the Islands affect plant life. Of special interest to serious students is the only annotated checklist in print of all vascular plants recorded for San Juan County. San Juan visitors as well as the Islanders themselves will find that this handy, compact guide adds a new and enjoyable dimension to their walks and wanders around these delightful island retreats.

Book Synopsis Research Natural Area Needs in the Pacific Northwest by : C. T. Dyrness
Download or read book Research Natural Area Needs in the Pacific Northwest written by C. T. Dyrness and published by . This book was released on 1975 with total page 244 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Research Natural Areas are examples of typical and distinctive natural ecosystems and habitats reserved for scientific and educational use. This outline of the minimal Research Natural Area system needed to provide adequate field laboratories for ecological, environmental, and land management research was developed by an interinstitutional, interdisciplinary working group. Natural area needs were first described on the basis of individual organisms, habitats, or ecosystems which should be represented. These "cells," the basic building blocks in defining the total scope of the system, considered terrestrial and aquatic environments as well as rare and endangered species. Identified cells were matched against existing Research Natural Areas to determine which were already filled. The remaining, unfilled cells were then tentatively grouped as units which were listed as Research Natural Area needs. A minimal Research Natural Area system for Oregon and Washington requires approximately 360 tracts which, in turn, incorporate over 770 individual cells (ecosystems, habitats, or organisms). Since 60 Research Natural Areas are already established, about 300 additional areas are needed. These remaining needs were assigned a priority (low, medium, or high) based on importance and degree to which they are endangered, as well as identified as to the Federal, State, or private agency or institution most likely to be able to provide a tract of that type. The purpose of Research Natural Areas, their place in land planning, history of Research Natural Area activities in the Pacific Northwest, and general observations and recommendations on unresolved problems are also outlined.

Book Synopsis Dictionary Of British And Irish Botantists And Horticulturalists Including plant collectors, flower painters and garden designers by : Ray Desmond
Download or read book Dictionary Of British And Irish Botantists And Horticulturalists Including plant collectors, flower painters and garden designers written by Ray Desmond and published by CRC Press. This book was released on 2020-12-23 with total page 876 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Over the past four centuries botanists and gardeners in the British Isles have gathered, maintained and propagated many varying species of plants. Their work has been documented in innumerable books and articles which are often difficult to trace. The Dictionary of British and Irish Botanists and Horticulturalists represents a time-saving reference source for those who wish to discover more about the lives and achievements of the horticulturalists listed. The dictionary's utility comes not only from indicating the major publications of the named authors, but also the location of their herbaria and manuscripts.; The previous 1977 edition of the Dictionary has for many years been a much used source of information for botanists, botanic artists and archivists. In this revised edition the scope has been expanded to include among its 13,000 entries flower painters in addition to botanical artists over 1400 entries and, for the first time, garden designers.; Finally the Dictionary should have international appeal since so many botanists and gardeners worked on collective plants overseas, in particular in North America and the British Commonwealth.; Each entry gives, wherever possible, details of dates and places of birth and death, educational qualifications, professional posts, honours and awards, publications, location of plant collections, manuscripts, drawings and portraits. Its main function, however, is to provide further biographical references to books and periodicals. Comprehensive classified indices facilitate access by professions and activities, countries, and plant interests.
