Book excerpt: Long after King Estein had joined his fathers on the little holm beyond Hernersfiord, the skalds of Sogn still sang this tale of Vandrad the Viking. It contained much wonderful magic and some astonishingly hard strokes, as they told it; but reading between their lines, the magic bears a strong resemblance to many spells cast even at this day.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The story of “Ivar the Viking” depicts the actual life of Norse chiefs who ruled during the 4th Century. It also gives the customs, religion, life, and mode of thinking which prevailed among the people. It is the intention of the author to give a correct outlook of the civilization of the Norsemen of that period, the men who arrived at the gates of Rome and Byzantium, and settled in Britain, Gaul, Germania, Russia, the Ukraine and on the shores of the Mediterranean, and other countries. The author begins the story of his hero with his birth, accompanied by the characteristic ceremonies attending it. We are told of his fostering, his education, his coming of age, of the precepts of wisdom he is taught, of his foster-brothers, of the sacred ceremony of foster-brotherhood, of his warlike expeditions and commercial voyages, of the death and funeral of his father, of his accession to rule, and other similarly typical Viking events. In short, a typical Viking Saga. NOTE: There is not an object, a jewel, either Norse, Roman, Greek, Muslim, Central Asian or a coin mentioned, that has not been found in the present Scandinavia, and they can be seen today in its museums, and often in great numbers. When this book was first published it caused controversy as the author claimed the early pre-Saxon settlers of Britain were of Norse descent. It was from comparing the graves and antiquities of the Norselands with those of England that proof that the early settlers of Britain were Norsemen. There is a scene in this volume, of Ivar going to visit his kinsmen on the banks of the River Cam, in England, has been described, because there is a cemetery there whose antiquities show its Norse origin, and the Roman coins buried with them, of Trajanus, 98-117 A.D.; of Hadrianus, 117-138; Faustina, wife of Antoninus Pius, 138-161; Marcus Aurelius, 161-180; of Maximianus, 286-305, show how early Norse settlements began. The Roman records are correct. No countries but the islands of the Baltic and Scandinavia correspond to their description. But it is there that we find a great number of Roman objects. Coins are there found from the time of the foundation of the empire—those of Augustus 29 B.C. to 14 A.D., of Tiberius 14-37, Claudius 41-54; then in increased number those of Nero 54-68, Vitellius 69, Vespasian 69-79, of Titus 79-81; in still greater number those of Trajan 98-117, Antoninus Pius 138-161, of Faustina the elder, wife of Antoninus Pius, of Marcus Aurelius 161-180, of Faustina his wife, of Commodus 180-192; then in decreasing quantities the coins of the subsequent emperors. By the side of these coins and other Roman objects are Norse objects, and these Norse objects are, as I have said, similar to those found in the England of a corresponding period. The mode of burial is also identical in both countries. These facts tell plainly who were the people who settled in Britain before and after the time of Ivar the Viking and of the Roman occupation. 10% of the net sale will be donated to charities by the publisher. ============== KEYWORDS/TAGS: Ivar the Viking, Norse, Saga, Hero, Asgard, Odin, Thor, Æsir, Loki, Hjorvard, Gotland, Viking Land, Vikings, Oracle, Birth, Life Forecast, Fostering, Attains Majority, Expedition, Yule Sacrifice, Defeat of the Romans, Visit to Britain, Daughters of Ran, Romantic, Adventures, Sigurd, Voyage, Caspian, Haki, Burning, Journey to Valhalla, Death, Burning of Hjorvard, Helgi, Valkyrias, Inheritance Feast, Starkad’s Indemnity, Slaying of Starkad, Session of the Thing, Visit to Yngvi, Poets, Champions, Three, Beautiful, Daughters, Guests, Hersir, Svithjod, Sweden, Athletic Games, Great Feats, Hjalmar, Foster-Brothers, Fall in Love, Romance, Betrothal, Ivar and Randalin, Duel, Ketil, Astrid, Wedding

Book excerpt: This story about Rolf, a youth and son of Hiarandi the Unlucky, who lives in early Christian Iceland during the days when the Icelandic society was transforming from the old Norse religion to Christianity. At the urging of his wife, Hiarandi does an unprecedented thing and lights a signal fire on a dangerous point of his land, challenging the accepted custom which places lucrative salvage at higher value than the saving of life. However, the life that is saved that night causes his own death and eventually, the unjust outlawing of his son Rolf. Rolf loses first his father, then his property, and finally his freedom to a scheming neighbour. Then he is outlawed from Iceland at the Althing (Council) and travels abroad, meeting with shipwreck, enslavement, Viking berserkers, and many other dangers and adventures. All the while, Rolf searches for a way to prove his father was killed unjustly and win back his own property and freedom. Even more difficult, Rolf must end the cycle of enmity, vengeance, and pride that hangs like a curse over his family Rolf's response to the injustice done to him creates a suspenseful, thought-provoking and page-turning tale which is difficult to put down. ============ KEYWORDS/TAGS: Rolf and the Viking’s Bow, Norse, Archery, , abroad, Althing, Asdis, ashore, atonement, baresarks, beacon, beserkers, blood, bow, Broadfirth, carline, chapmen, cliffs, cloak, Cragness, crags, Earl, Einar, evil, father, Fellstead, Flosi, Frodi, Gisli, gold, Grani, Grettir, Hallmund, Hallvard, Hawksness, heart, Helga, Hiarandi, home, Iceland, judges, Kari, Kiartan, kinsman, Kolbein, money, mound, neighbours, Ondott, Orkney, Outlaw, outlawry, Priest, Quarter, Rolf, Scots, sea, shepherd, shield, ship, shipmaster, shoot, smithy, smote, Snorri, son, storehouse, storm, strength, Sweyn, sword, Thorfinn, thrall, Thurid, Tongue, travel, Vemund, vengeance, viking, warship, weapons, whittle, winter, witnesses, wounds

Book excerpt: Herein are 9 most popular Myths and Legends from Scandinavian mythology translated and retold by sisters Annie & Eliza Keary and illustrated by Huard of New York. Much has been said and written about the wonder and majesty of Norse mythology. Next to the bible it is the culture most of the peoples of the Northern hemisphere know and identify with. After all the Vikings ranged from Greenland in the West, to Byzantium (Turkey) and Egypt in the East and all lands in between. It is believed that a few Vikings even made it as far as ancient Samarkand and Bactria on the Silk Road. The myths and legends in this volume cover: * The Æsir * How Thor Went to Jötunheim * Frey * The Wanderings of Freyja * Idūna's Apples * Baldur * The Binding of Fenrir * The Punishment of Loki; and * Ragnarök, or, The Twilight of the Gods This volume was considered to be so groundbreaking at the time that it was published twice and other illustrators also published their own editions with their own artworks. Many of the Viking and Norse mythology books which followed used this volume as a template for the newer works. 10% of the net sale will be donated to charities by the publisher. ============== KEYWORDS/TAGS: Heroes of Asgard, Odin, Thor, Æsir, Loki, earth, Baldur, giant, Freyja, Asgard, Frey, Jötunheim, Idūna, Fenrir, beautiful, Frigga, Tyr, men, golden, Skirnir, deities, Odur, Norse, Viking, Myths, mythology, Legends, , heart, bright, Hermod, sun, Heimdall, elves, Hela, Alfheim, All Father, death, Niörd, Suttung, Miölnir, story, chain, children, sword, Thialfi, Helheim, Bragi, Air, Jörmungand, Gerda, Hymir, son, daughter, apples, Throne, summer, Frigg, King, darkness, Odhærir, Odhaerir, Bifröst, blood, chariot, breath, Ægir, river, Hœnir, wolf, Brisingamen, Gladsheim, Niflheim, Valhalla, maidens, Baugi, mountains, Ragnarök, Utgard, shape, Simrock, serpent, Gunnlöd, Vidar, wicked, Giant, Skadi, Hödur, Idūn, Iduna, Vala, Edda, Svartheim, monster, Norns, Mimer, Garm, Urd, Peacestead, Manheim, Asyniur, purpose, Gerd, Vana, Allfather, Valkyrior, Verdandi, Folkvang, Idūna, , Vanir, Hugin, Munin, Urda, Logi, companion, Yggdrasil, wandering, Sleipnir, Thiassi, Ægir, Aegir, , Fialar, Kvasir, Galar, Skuld, Hugi, Vali, Hall, gathering, Ving-Thor, whetstone, mistletoe, journey, Audhumla, Skrymir, Gilling, Giallar, eagle's, Gerda, Thing, Ting, Queen, honey, Höd, Skidbladnir

In ancient Iceland every midsummer there was a great meeting. Men from all over the country came and made laws. During the day there were rest times, when no business was going on. Then some skald would take his harp and walk to a large stone or a knoll and stand on it and begin a song of some brave deed of an old Norse hero. At the first sound of the harp and the voice, men would come running from all directions, crying out: "A skald! A skald! A saga!" There they would stand for hours listening and shouting applause. When the skald was tired, another would take his place. The best skalds were well travelled and visited many people. Their songs made them welcome everywhere. They were always honoured with good seats at a feast and were given many rich gifts. Even the King of Norway was known to sometimes send across the water to Iceland for a skald to attend his court. Initially these tales, or sagas, were not written for few men wrote or read in those days. When at last people began to read and write, they first recorded the sagas on sheepskin, or vellum. Many of these old vellum books have been saved for hundreds of years and are now in museums in Norway and Iceland. Some pages have been lost, some are torn and all are yellow and crumpled. But they are precious. They tell us all that we know about that olden time. There are the very words that the men of Iceland wrote so long ago—stories of kings and of battles and of ship-sailing. Some of the most significant old stories are now told in this book. 10% of the publisher’s profit from the sale of this book will be donated to UNICEF. ======= KEYWORDS/TAGS: Viking Tales, Jennie Hall, men, Thing, battle, beautiful, boat, died, door, Eric, father, feast, fight, fire, gold, great, Greenland, Gudrid, guests, hall, Harald, head, house, Iceland, Ingolf, king, King Harald, land, Leif Ericson, Leif Ericsson, man, night, Norsemen, Norway, Odin, Olaf, one, One, people, red, sail, sea, ship, shore, shouted, strange, sword, Thor, Thorfinn, thralls, three, together, Valhalla, vow, Vinland, America, USA, Canada, water, white, wife, Wineland, women, woods, Newfoundland, scald, saga

Book excerpt: The general details and course of events given in this story about King Alfred are, in the main, as written by Asser, the King’s chaplain. One or two further incidents of the Athelney period are from the later chroniclers--notably the sign given by St. Cuthberht--as are also the names of the herdsman and the nobles in hiding in the fen. But all the characters can be found here – King Alfred, Queen Ealhswith, their daughters, Asser, Odda, Osmund, Cuthbert, Guthrum, Hubba, St. Neot, Athelstan Godred, Ethelred, Thiodolf, Thora and the other significant players of the age. The story is told by Ranald Vemundsson, son of the late Vemund, king of Southmereland, Norway, slain by Jarl Rognvald on the orders of Harald Fairhair. For his own safety Ranald fled Norway after being given a place on Jarl Einar’s ship - and so he came to England and the Danelaw. Whether Ranald actually was Alfred’s Viking is conjecture. That Alfred put his first fleet into the charge of "certain Vikings" is well known, though the name of their chief is not given. These Vikings would certainly be Norse, either detached from the following of Rolf Ganger, who wintered in England in 875 A.D. the year before his descent on Normandy; or else independent rovers who, like Rolf, had been driven from Norway by the high-handed methods of Harald Fairhair. Indeed, the time when a Norse contingent was not present with the English forces, from this period till at least that of the battle of Brunanburh in 947 A.D. would probably be an exception. There are, therefore, good historic grounds for the position given to the hero of the story as leader of the newly-formed fleet. The details of the burning of his supposed father's hall, and of the Orkney period, are taken from the Sagas. =============== KEYWORDS/TAGS: King Alfred’s Viking, Norse, Seek, Sword Helmbiter, Gifts, Two Heroes, Odda, Ealdorman Of Devon, Jarl Osmund, Daughter, Meetings, England, Action, Adventure, Anglia, Athelney, battle, brave, Bridgwater, Cannington, chainmail, Chippenham, Christian, Combwich, comrades, Danes, Danish, Denewulf, Devon, ealdorman, Edington, Einar, England, Etheldreda, Ethelnoth, Ethelred, Exeter, father, fleet, Glastonbury, Godred, golden, Guthrum, Harald Fairhair, Harek, heart, Helmbiter, eregar, Heregar, horses, Hubba, jarl, Jarl, kingdom, Kolgrim, Lady, laugh, laughter, maiden, Mercia, mound, Norsemen, Norway, Odda, Odin, Osmund, Parret, peace, people, Polden, Quantocks, ramparts, Ranald, river, round, runes, Saxon, Saxon, scald, Selwood, ships, Sigehelm, Sigurd, St Neot, stones, sword, Taunton, thane, Thiodolf, Thora, Thord, three, thunder, tongue, Vemundsson, Wareham, weapons, Wessex, wild, Black, Combwich, Cuthbert, Dance, Edington, Fight, Greatest Victory, King Alfred's Will,Pixies, Sign Of St. Cuthberht, Twelfth-Night, Winning Of "The Raven"

This book was released on 2018-08-30 with total page 208 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The book which inspired the Sharpe Novels! Just as in the Sharpe Novels by Bernard Cornwell, the Prince’s Own 95th Rifles was a real regiment, and there was a real Rifleman Harris for it is his recollections which are published in this volume. There was indeed a soldier who joined the rifles and was soon made a sergeant. By the end of the wars he had, unusually, risen to be a commissioned officer (see Ch. XV.). It is believed that it is this story which inspired the character of Richard Sharpe. Harris’ story starts after he had been recruited and was now, in-turn, on a recruiting drive. In this volume he recounts anecdotes about his officers; believe me all enlisted men have such stories about their officers. He also recounts occurrences of desertion and the penalties if caught, cases of treachery and accounts of camaraderie. There is even an account of how he held a perfectly rational conversation with a fellow rifleman during the heat of battle, no easy feat when you’re using a muzzle loader. All of these are retold at some point during the Sharpe Novels. Also recorded are the battles in which the part he, and the 95th, took part. Here you can read of the battles of Roliça, Vimiero, Slamanca and the retreat to Corunna. Read also of the stories of “A cobbler and the cannon ball”, “A lubberly artilleryman”, “Major Travers and his wig” and how the 95th routed Boney's Invincibles. If a soldier survived the Peninsula War, he would have had the opportunity to augment his meagre wages by plundering what items of value the enemy left behind. In many cases this meant picking over the dead. Hence there was the opportunity to finish the war a lot wealthier than he could have imagined. The wives and dependants of the soldiers were also allowed to pick over the dead at the end of each battle. In most cases it would mean cutting off brass buttons and removing belts. If they were lucky they may find an officer’s sword or pistols. Many would convert their pickings to cash, or use them to trade, for food for themselves and any children they may have with them. Harris himself was illiterate. He is thought to have been born in Portsea, Portsmouth into a family of shepherds and this was his way of life until he joined the army in 1803. His recollections were recorded for him, after the war, at some stage in the middle of the 1830s by an officer who knew him, Captain Henry Curling, editor of this volume. Curling then kept the manuscript until 1848, when he succeeded in getting it published. So, we invite you to download this very interesting, first-hand account, of an enlisted man who inspired the story of Richard Sharpe and the Sharpe Novels. =============== HISTORICAL NOTE: The Prince’s Own 95th underwent a few reinventions and amalgamations during the Peninsula Wars ending the Napoleonic wars as The Rifle Brigade. They were still in existence during WWI and at the outbreak of WWII they were part of The 1st Battalion, Rifle Brigade and performed with distinguished service during both World Wars. On 1 January 1966 the regiment was amalgamated with the 1st Green Jackets (43rd and 52nd) and the King's Royal Rifle Corps to form The Royal Green Jackets. The 1st Battalion The Royal Green Jackets' final operation was in Basra, Iraq, on Operation Telic in 2006/7. Thereafter they were reorganised and amalgamated in 2007 with a few other regiments to become The Rifles. =============== KEYWORDS/TAGS: Richard Sharpe, Sharpe Series, Sharpe Novels, Bernard Cornwell, Rifleman Harris, Peninsula Wars, Napoleon, Boney, Recruiting, Army Reserve, penalty for desertion, General Craufurd, cowardice, treachery, Trial, General Whitelock, Irish recruits, shillelagh, Protestant, Catholic, Danish expedition, home, Embark, Spain, Portugal, Lord Hill, wine, in the field, the wounded, enemy, Manœuvres, advance, Battle of Roliça, devotion, Battle of Vimiero, cobbler, cannon ball, handicraft, lubberly, artilleryman, heat of action, battle-field, Vimiero, military family, scapegrace, surprise, fortune, General Napier, Boney, Invincibles, cold steel, Church plunder, haphazard shot, Booty, Portuguese, chivalry, General Kellerman, hornet's nest, Beat to quarters, Salamanca, Heavy marches, gallant, military agriculturist, gentleman farmer, Death or glory, The Duke, Wellington, brothers Hart, North Mayo, militiaman, Marshal Beresford, gunpowder, False alarm, Retreat, Skirmish, pursuers, escapes, rounds, French general, New year's day, mutineers, inflexibility, endurance, wilderness, Dangerous ground, magic lantern, in need, Sir Dudley Hill, stragglers, Spanish welcome, English ships, Other ranks, demon runner, Winning, commission, Flushing, Walcheren fever, expedition, attack, survivor, veteran battalion, independent companies
