Book Synopsis Ground Improvement Techniques by : Bujang B.K. Huat
Download or read book Ground Improvement Techniques written by Bujang B.K. Huat and published by CRC Press. This book was released on 2019-11-06 with total page 315 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book provides a review of problems during design and construction on problematic soils. Design methods, site investigation, construction and analysis of the various improvement methods available are explained and discussed. Various regions may have different soils with geotechnical problems that differ from those faced in other regions. For example, in Southeast Asia, the common geotechnical problems are those associated with construction on soft clays and organic soils, while in the arid region of the Middle East, problems are generally associated with the desert soils. In the US, the problems are associated with organic soils, expansive and collapsing soils, and shale. Laterite and lateritic soils are especially problematic in Mexico. Similarly, in Europe, for example, the geotechnical problems are associated with loess (France), and organic soil (Germany). A detailed description of various methods of ground improvement has been provided in 11 chapters. Each chapter deals not only with a description of the method but also focuses on region-specific ground problems and suitable ground improvement techniques. Case studies have also been included. One general chapter is dedicated to site investigation, instrumentation, assessment and control. This book will be of value to students and professionals in the fields of civil and geotechnical engineering, as well as to soil scientists and engineering geologists.

This book was released on 2022-08-31 with total page 104 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Valorization of Dredged Sediments as Sustainable Construction Resources provides a comprehensive and up-to-date overview of research on the reuse of sediments as a raw material for civil engineering fields. Dredging is increasing in scale worldwide, while deep sea disposal is being eliminated and landfill disposal is becoming less sustainable. Yet these sediments offer a potentially useful resource for constructing pavements, soil, bricks, ceramic and clinker, for they provide fine and lightweight aggregates, supplementary cementitious materials and geopolymer binders. This has sparked considerable research on valorization, which is presented here. Covers the main re-uses of sediments and the valorization required Focuses on state-of-the-art research on practical guidance Discusses limitations and future perspectives for sediments valorization The book suits researchers and students working in the area, as well as industrial engineers and professionals working on recycling and dredging.

Download or read book Contaminated Sediments: written by Marianne Olsen and published by Nordic Council of Ministers. This book was released on 2019-07-09 with total page 83 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Nordic Council of Ministers have recognized the need to compile the knowledge of sediment remediation strategies and to evaluate different remediation approaches. The objective of this report is to give a status of regulatory framework and sediment management within selected Nordic countries (Norway, Sweden, Finland and Denmark). In addition, the report gives a short overview of international knowledge on remediation approaches, techniques, and materials. Governance and regulatory instruments in dealing with contaminated sediments vary between countries. Of the countries presented, only Norwegian environmental authorities have implemented a national strategy for remediation of marine contaminated sediments. A Nordic database of clean-up projects and long-term monitoring would improve the exchange of knowledge between the Nordic countries.

Book Synopsis Fine Sediment Dynamics in the Marine Environment by : Johan C. Winterwerp
Download or read book Fine Sediment Dynamics in the Marine Environment written by Johan C. Winterwerp and published by Elsevier. This book was released on 2002-06-05 with total page 731 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Cohesive sediment, or mud, is encountered in most water bodies throughout the world. Often mud is a valuable resource, synonymous with fertile land, enriching the natural environment and used as an important building material. Yet mud also hinders navigation and consequently, dredging operations have been carried out since ancient times to safeguard navigation. Unfortunately, many mud deposits are now contaminated, endangering the eco-system and increasing the costs of dredging operations. The transport and fate of mud in the environment are still poorly understood and the need for basic research remains. This text contains the proceedings of the INTERCOH-2000 conference on progress in cohesive sediment research. It was the sixth in a series of conferences initially started by Professor Ashish Mehta in 1984 as a "Workshop on Cohesive Sediment Dynamics with Special Reference to the Processes in Estuaries". During these conferences the character of the first workshop has always been maintained, that is, small scale and dedicated to the physical and engineering aspects of cohesive sediments, without parallel sessions, but with ample time for discussions during and after the presentations, and followed by a book of proceedings containing thoroughly reviewed papers. INTERCOH-2000 was integrated with the final workshop of the COSINUS project. This project was carried out as a part of the European MAST-3 programme, and almost all European cohesive sediment workers were involved. INTERCOH-2000 focused on the behaviour and modelling of concentrated benthic suspensions, i.e. high-concentrated near-bed suspensions of cohesive sediment. Special attention was paid to: sediment - turbulence interaction; flocculation and settling velocity; high-concentrated mud suspensions; processes in the bed - consolidation; processes on the bed - erosion; field observations on mud dynamics; instrumentation; and numerical modelling.

Book Synopsis Sediment Quality Assessment by : Stuart Simpson
Download or read book Sediment Quality Assessment written by Stuart Simpson and published by CSIRO PUBLISHING. This book was released on 2016-02 with total page 359 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Contaminated sediments represent an ongoing threat to the health of aquatic ecosystems. The assessment of sediment quality is, therefore, an important concern for environmental regulators. Sediment quality guidelines are now well established in regulatory frameworks worldwide; however, practical guidance that covers all of the key aspects of sediment quality assessment is not readily available. In 2005, CSIRO published its highly cited Handbook for Sediment Quality Assessment. In the ensuing period, the science has advanced considerably. This practical guide is a revised and much expanded second edition, which will be a valuable tool for environmental practitioners. Written by experts in the field, it provides coverage of: sediment sampling; sample preparation; chemical analysis; ecotoxicology; bioaccumulation; biomarkers; and ecological assessment. In addition, detailed appendices describe protocols for many of the tests to be used.

Download or read book Sediment Watch written by Chee Kong Yap and published by . This book was released on 2018-05-10 with total page 258 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The purpose of this book is to provide the latest, if not complete amount of updated information regarding the use of sediments for the estimation of chemical pollution in the aquatic environment from three main perspectives, namely, monitoring, ecological risk assessment and environmental management. The intended readers of this book include academicians, policy-makers, university students and researchers. This book contains eleven chapters. Chapters Three, Four, Six, Seven, Eight, Nine, Ten and Eleven mainly contain monitoring studies of pollutants (especially heavy metals) and sedimentary characteristics. Chapters Two, Five, Six, Eight, Nine and Ten have the portions largely consist of the monitoring data for the ecological risk assessments. Chapters One, Two, Four, Seven, Eight and Ten include recommendations for possible environmental management.Chapters One, Three, Four, Nine and Ten are reviews based on published data and findings, but with new insights and perspectives from researchers points of view. Chapter One reviews thirty publications, published between 2015 and August 2017, the management of coastal environments focusing on the pollutants investigated in the sedimentary components of the resourceful area in the coasts. Chapter Three reviews and compares scientific papers related to sedimentary characteristics of the tsunami sediments and deposits after the 2004 Indian Ocean and 2011 Tohoku-oki Tsunamis. Chapter Four reviews fourteen ISI published papers on the metal contamination in sediments of the Persian Gulf that were impacted by anthropogenic activities. Chapter Nine investigates geographical spatial distribution, and the ecological and children''s health risk assessments of Copper (Cu) aquatic ecosystems ranging from rivers, mangroves, estuaries and offshore areas were investigated using cited Cu data in the sediments from 100 randomly selected published papers in the literature. Chapter Ten presents the geochemical speciation and risk assessment of heavy metals in southwestern Taiwan coastal sediments. The study was based on a review of more than eleven studies and the heavy metal data were re-analyzed for the enrichment factor and potential ecological risk index.Other chapters (namely Chapters Two, Five, Six, Seven, Eight and Eleven) investigated metal pollution by using sediment watch, reporting metal data for the first time. Chapter Two presents the geochemical fractions of six heavy metals on surface sediments collected from drainages of Malacca''s industrial area and the Malacca River. Chapter Five presents the ecological risk assessment of heavy metals in the sediments collected, in 2007, from the Sepang Besar River and the Sepang Kecil River, that were previously a pig farming area in the early 1990s. Chapter Six investigates the distribution and enrichment of heavy metals in the surface marine sediments of coastal Sabah, Malaysia. Chapter Seven reports the concentrations of Cr, Co, Mn and Sc in the mangrove snail in association with the above four metals with their habitat surface sediments. Chapter Eight presents the ecological risk assessments of heavy metals in surface sediments collected from a rocky shore in Tanjung Harapan. Chapter Eleven reports the Nd isotopic signature in sedimentary Mn/Fe oxides, which can be used as a tracer of the variations of west Pacific oceanographic exchange during the last 27Ka.Prominent scientists from Japan such as Prof. Hideo Okamura (Kobe University, Japan), Prof Hiroya Harino (Kobe College, Japan), Prof. Minoru Saito (Nihon University, Japan) and Prof. Kazuhiro Toyoda (Hokkaido University, Japan), Dr. Gen Kanaya and Dr. Tomohiko Isobe (both from National Institute of Environmental Sciences, Tsukuba, Japan), who co-authored some of the chapters have helped to improve the quality of the chapters in this book. Chapters from Prof Chen-Feng You from the National Cheng Kung University (Taiwan), and Dr. Moslem Sharifinia from the Iranian National Institute for Oceanography and Atmospheric Science (Iran) are also important elements concerning the construction of international readership for this book.
