Book excerpt: This report describes airglow and stellar observations made on the TEM-1 rocket flight as a part of the Multispectral Measurements Program (MSMP). The observations were in the 1100 to 3000 A wavelength range from 65 to about 230-km altitude, and they include a number of scans of the viewing direction through the earth's horizon. Night airglow emissions observed include the hydrogen Lyman alpha geocorona and the oxygen Herzberg bands. A number of stars were observed including alpha-Eridanus, which is found to match previous intensity measurements. The instrumentation consists of filter photometers with 10 x 10 element digicon spatial detectors and a spectrometer using a 1 x 36 element digicon for spectral resolution. The report describes the instrumentation, discusses the observations, and compares the results with previous measurements. (Author).

Book excerpt: SURVEY OF OBSERVATIONAL DATA ON INFRARED EMISSION FROM CELESTIAL OBJECTS IS PRESENTED AND CORRELATED WITH RECENT THEORETICAL CALCULATIONS. Spectral distribution of the radiation is analyzed with regard to departures from blackbody radiation predictions based upon effective temperatures and stellar spectral classification. Application of these data to infrared systems is discussed and the infrared background radiance values due to the galactic and solar systems are calculated. (Author).

Book excerpt: A sounding rocket tumble system to enhance deceleration and redirect the flight path angle of a vehicle can be an effective means of accomplishing large spacial separation between a separated payload and the spent final stage rocket motor. The design and implementation of two such systems, for 9-in. - and 17-in. -diam payloads, is presented. Flight test results show that separation distances between payload and vehicle in the order of 10 percent of vehicle apogee can be achieved. (Author).

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is intended to serve as an introduction to the multidisciplinary ?eld of anomalous diffusion in complex systems such as turbulent plasma, convective rolls, zonal ?ow systems, stochastic magnetic ?elds, etc. In spite of its great importance, turbulent transport has received comparatively little treatment in published mo- graphs. This book attempts a comprehensive description of the scaling approach to turbulent diffusion. From the methodological point of view, the book focuses on the general use of correlation estimates, quasilinear equations, and continuous time random walk - proach. I provide a detailed structure of some derivations when they may be useful for more general purposes. Correlation methods are ?exible tools to obtain tra- port scalings that give priority to the richness of ingredients in a physical pr- lem. The mathematical description developed here is not meant to provide a set of “recipes” for hydrodynamical turbulence or plasma turbulence; rather, it serves to develop the reader’s physical intuition and understanding of the correlation mec- nisms involved.
