This book was released on 2013 with total page 83 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The United States has become more ethnically and linguistically diverse over the years due to the large influx of immigrants from different countries, as well as the cultural diversity among resident families who speak more than one language. States such as California, Texas, New York, and Miami have a high number of residents who speak a language other than English. Students whose primary language is anything other than English are considered English Language Learners (ELLs) and have to take an annual test to determine their English language proficiency. No Child Left Behind stipulates that all students need to be making yearly adequate academic progress and they use normed tests, such as the California Standards Test (CST), to determine whether sufficient growth has been made. Over the years there has been consistent evidence to support the fact that ELL students underperform in comparison to their monolingual peers. The persistent gap of underachievement supports the concept that students who lack sufficient English proficiency will have difficulty performing within age expected norms. This study seeks to analyze whether there is a correlation between California Standards Test (CST) and California English Language Development Test (CELDT). A correlational study between these two standardized tests used in the schools is useful because it allows educators to make predictions as to how language proficiency affects academic performance. By understanding the correlations one can target students who need extra support to advance academically and get reclassified out of English Language Development (ELD) programs. Moreover, understanding the correlation between these two standardized tests will assist educators in the validity of using CST for evaluation purposes.

This book was released on 2006 with total page 65 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The current study examines the connection between curriculum-based assessment (CBA) results in reading given in the fall and Standardized Testing and Reporting (STAR) Program outcomes in the spring for 375 students in the second through fourth grades. Results indicate that reading CBA measures are predictive of STAR outcomes. Reading Fluency benchmarks predicted poor performance on the STAR 66 to 100% of the time based on grade level and satisfactory performance 75 to 92% of the time. Reading Comprehension benchmarks predicted poor performance on the STAR 42 to 75% of the time and satisfactory performance 75 to 95% of the time.
Book Synopsis English Language Learners by : Karen Grandoli
Download or read book English Language Learners written by Karen Grandoli and published by . This book was released on 2017 with total page 57 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the state of California, far too many English Language Learners are not successful in reclassifying as proficient in English in the four to six-year time frame considered average for most students. Students who are "at-risk" for becoming Long-term English Language Learners (LTEL) or who are already considered Long-term English Language Learners represented 29% of all English Language Learners in the state of California last year. This figure is even more troubling in high school where 65% of English Language Learners (ELL) are considered "at-risk" or LTEL. Students who do reclassify as fluent in English (RFEP) outperform not only other ELL students but often outperform native English speakers as well. The literature reviewed shows that LTEL students are often born in this country, but have inconsistencies in their educational programs due to migration or districts switching instructional programming. Most of them lack academic language in both their native language and in English although they often speak both languages conversationally. Some early interventions and specific teaching strategies have been proven to increase results for ELL students. A strong assessment program can help districts determine the progress of ELL students while they are in the lower elementary grades. This quantitative study in methodology seeks to determine the effectiveness of the Renaissance STAR reading program as an early predictor for ELL students' performance on the California Assessment of Student Performance and Progress (CAASPP) by asking if a correlation can be found between STAR scores in grades one and two and CAASPP scores in grades three through five as well as asking if there are average scores for both students at-risk for becoming LTEL and students to reclassify in a timely matter. This study will help to contribute to the research by comparing a very commonly used assessment, the STAR, to our California's current standardized test the CAASPP.

Book Synopsis Aligning the NWEA RIT Scale with the California Standards Test (CST) by : John Cronin
Download or read book Aligning the NWEA RIT Scale with the California Standards Test (CST) written by John Cronin and published by . This book was released on 2004 with total page 32 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Many students who attend school in California also take paper or computerized-adaptive tests developed in cooperation with the Northwest Evaluation Association (NWEA). These tests report student performance on a single, cross-grade scale, which NWEA calls the RIT scale. This scale was developed using Rasch scaling methodologies. RIT-based tests are used to inform a variety of educational decisions at the district, school, and classroom level. They are also used to monitor academic growth of students and cohorts. Districts choose whether to include these assessments in their local assessment programs. They are not state mandated. The versions of NWEA tests in use in California have been specifically aligned to match the content of local and California state curriculum standards. Because of this, it is believed there is a good match in content between the NWEA tests and the curriculum standards being used in California. In order to use the two testing systems to support each other, an alignment of the scores from the state and RIT-based tests is as important as the curriculum alignment. The current study is an expansion of a preliminary study of alignment of the California Standards Tests (CST) that was performed using data from one California school system in June 2003. It is one of an ongoing series of studies that are being conducted to identify the relationships between NWEA tests and state-mandated assessments. Studies of assessments in sixteen states have now been completed. The primary questions addressed in this study are: (1) To what extent do the same subject scores for the NWEA test correlate to the content-similar subjects on the CST? (2) What fall and spring RIT scores correspond to various performance levels on the CST tests? and (3) How well can "proficient" performance on the California assessments be predicted from fall and spring RIT scores? (Contains 24 tables and 9 figures.).

Book Synopsis Early Childhood Assessment by : National Research Council
Download or read book Early Childhood Assessment written by National Research Council and published by National Academies Press. This book was released on 2008-12-21 with total page 501 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The assessment of young children's development and learning has recently taken on new importance. Private and government organizations are developing programs to enhance the school readiness of all young children, especially children from economically disadvantaged homes and communities and children with special needs. Well-planned and effective assessment can inform teaching and program improvement, and contribute to better outcomes for children. This book affirms that assessments can make crucial contributions to the improvement of children's well-being, but only if they are well designed, implemented effectively, developed in the context of systematic planning, and are interpreted and used appropriately. Otherwise, assessment of children and programs can have negative consequences for both. The value of assessments therefore requires fundamental attention to their purpose and the design of the larger systems in which they are used. Early Childhood Assessment addresses these issues by identifying the important outcomes for children from birth to age 5 and the quality and purposes of different techniques and instruments for developmental assessments.

Book excerpt: Multifaceted Assessment in Early Childhood is ideal for those on upper-division undergraduate courses and first-level graduate courses in early childhood education assessment. The book covers the various measures used in a range of assessment dimensions, and includes valuable information regarding young children with special needs and English Language Learners, which has rarely been touched upon in other textbooks. The chapters are focused on student accessibility and include practical applications of key concepts. Features and benefits: Covers a range of assessment concepts, including - Formative (uses feedback from learning to adapt teaching) -Summative (i.e. tests, quizzes) -Authentic (focuses on complex/deeper tasks) -Standardized (STAR, SAT) Includes coverage of assessment for English language learners and children with special needs -- topics that are not provided enough coverage in other books (including Wortham, McAfee, Puckett and Mindes). Wright's writing style grabs and engages the reader in the topic. Two of our reviewers who use Wortham specifically cited Wright's writing style as a reason they would adopt our book. A McAfee reviewer is likely to switch for the same reason.

Download or read book Overview: MELQO written by UNESCO and published by UNESCO Publishing. This book was released on 2017-08-14 with total page 99 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Measuring Early Learning Quality and Outcomes (MELQO) initiative began in 2014 as part of the global emphasis on early childhood development (ECD). Led by UNESCO, the World Bank, the Center for Universal Education at the Brookings Institution and UNICEF, the initiative aims to promote feasible, accurate and useful measurement of childrenâs development and learning at the start of primary school, and of the quality of their pre-primary learning environments. Items are designed for children between the ages of 4 and 6 years. Following the premise that many existing tools include similar items, the leading organizationsâ core team worked with a consortium of experts, non-governmental organizations (NGOs) and multilaterals to build upon current measurement tools to create a common set of items organized into modules for measuring: 1) early childhood development and learning, and 2) the quality of pre-primary learning environments. The MELQO core team and experts also collaborated to outline a process for context-specific adaptation of the measurement modules resulting from lessons learned from field-testing in several countries in 2015 and 2016. The modules are designed to be implemented at scale, with an emphasis on feasibility for low- and middle-income countries (LMICs). A key question addressed by MELQO was the balance between a global tool suitable for use everywhere, and local priorities and goals for childrenâs development. [Introduction, ed]
