Book excerpt: Apart from high cost, increased concern for environmental and health hazards has called for a reduction in the use of synthetic nematicides for nematode control. In vitro studies in Petri dishes showed that castor bean extracts had toxic effect on eggs and juveniles of root knot nematodes. Egg hatch inhibition and juvenile mortality decrease with increased dilution of the extract. With an increase in exposure time, juvenile mortality increased.Trials were conducted to observe the effect of the extract on root-knot nematode and some growth parameters of tomato plant in pot. Seedlings either dipped, side-drenched or a combination of both with different concentrations of castor bean extracts showed that plant height, stem girth, fresh shoot and root weights of extract-treated plants were significantly different from those of the control plants. Numbers of root-knot juveniles and galls on the roots of the extract-treated plants were significantly different from those of the control. The crude castor bean extract was nematotoxic to root-knot nematodes in vitro and potted tomato. This study should help shed light on the use of botanicals in managing plant parasitic nematodes on vegetables.

Book excerpt: Soil serves as an excellent reservoir for the rhizospheric microorganisms and these microorganisms provide front line defense against the pathogens attack to root. Among the different type of soil microorganisms plant health promoting bacteria (PHPB) had the ability to promote the plant growth and also reduced the severity of diseases caused by soil borne pathogens. The bacteria can profoundly, improve the seed germination, root development, and water uptake by plants. Beside this they can also improve the nutrient uptake or indirectly by changing the microbial balance in favour of beneficial microorganisms in the rhizosphere and can suppress the broad spectrum of plant borne plant pathogens.Considering the importance of these symbionts in the plant disease protection, it came into highlight for research that the combined application of these microorganisms is more beneficial than use of single agent and provides a better management against the plant parasitic nematodes.

This book was released on 2014-09-23 with total page 59 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Doctoral Thesis / Dissertation from the year 2010 in the subject Biology - Genetics / Gene Technology, grade: 94.30, Tamil Nadu Agricultural University, course: Plant Nematology, language: English, abstract: Tomatoes (Lycopersicon esculentum) are origin of South America and were first used as food in Southern Mexico. Since the fruit has seeds and grows from flowering plant, botanically it is classified under fruits. It is the state vegetable of New Jersey and official state fruit of Ohio and its juice is the official beverage of Ohio. The fruit is rich in lycopene which is an antioxidant found to be good for the heart and effective against certain cancer diseases. Also the fruits are rich in vitamin A and C, calcium and potassium. The best sources of lycopene are found in processed tomato products. Eighty per cent of the tomatoes harvested are industrially processed. Increase in demand of the processed products of tomato in domestic and international markets make an upward trend in the cultivation of this crop. Now days, tomatoes are important ingredient in pizza and pasta sauces. High acidic content in the fruit makes it a prime candidate in the canning industries. The factors that are attributed for the reduction of fruit yield of the crop include both biotic and abiotic stresses. Among the biotic stresses, plant parasitic nematodes play a major role in reducing the crop yield as tomatoes are excellent host for the nematodes. In general, Crop loss due to these nematodes worldwide was estimated to be greater than 11 per cent and among vegetables, infestation of root knot nematode contributes major loss for the crops (Ayyar, 1926). Annual yield loss of crops due to plant parasitic nematodes have been estimated about dollar 78 billion worldwide and dollar 8 billion for US growers. In Tamil Nadu, the loss incurred was estimated about Rs. 200 crores (Jonathan et al., 2005).Generally, nematode management success over a long term requires several alternatives and integration of approaches which should be economically feasible. This is especially true for horticultural crops. Therefore, safe and alternative methods for managing plant parasitic nematodes in horticultural crops are critically needed for the development of sustainable cropping systems. A promising alternative is the use of microbial antagonists against plant parasitic nematodes which are ecofriendly and economically feasible and it does not allow the nematodes to develop into new races or biotypes. In addition to that, they are easily amenable for mass production, formulation technology and easy to deliver in the field.

Book excerpt: The work on root knot nematode in tomato not only confined in India but throughout the world. The Organism actively involved in the scientific literature contributed by several oriental scientists and researchers. A brief account on the morphology and biology of the root knot nematode has been given also for a comprehensive understanding of the root knot nematode, Meloidogyne incognita and the disease caused by them. The nematicidal efficacy of essential oils obtained from aromatic plants tested against Meloidogyne incognita in tomato. The book with sizable number of tables and illustrations will be useful to scholars and researchers working in the field of tomato as well as root knot nematode, Meloidogyne incognita.

This book was released on 2014-12-05 with total page 108 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Root knot nematodes are the major constraints for vegetable crop production in Pakistan. The objectives of experiments were the application of bio-products (Vampire, Axiom, Fline) as seed dip treatment and seedling dip treatment and to determine the efficacy of most effective concentration of bio-product on the invasion and development of root knot nematode. One experiment on the effect of bio-products (Vampire, Axiom, Fline) on nematode reproduction and their influence on plant growth were run for 60 days and second experiment on development of J2 in roots of tomato growing in the presence of bio-products was run for 60 days. At harvest of data on population of J2 penetration and development, final J2 population in roots and soil, galling index, number of females/ 1 gm of soil, root galling and egg masses was assessed on 0-5 scale. Vampire and fline @ 5% and 10% showed best control of root knot nematode after 60 days and bio @ 5% showed best control of root knot nematode after 35 days. Most effective bio-product was selected to investigate its role for the management of root knot nematode associated with tomato. Bio @ 5% showed best control of root knot nematode.
