Book excerpt: This Vietnam War biography recounts the story of an American soldier who heroically gave his life to save his comrades. Private 1st Class Douglas E. Dickey was just twenty years old when he dove onto a grenade, saving the lives of four men, including his platoon leader. The young Marine’s actions on Easter Sunday 1967 won him a posthumous Medal of Honor. Dickey grew up in Ohio and enlisted in the Marine Corps with four of his high school friends. After he was deployed to Vietnam, he took part in Operation Deckhouse VI, a landing in Quang Ngai, then Operation Beacon Hill, which led him and his comrades into a devastating ambush. During the ensuing battle—one that nearly wiped out the entire platoon—a grenade landed in their midst. Without hesitation, Dickey took action. This biography grounds Dickey’s final, valiant act in the context of his life and the lives of his comrades and family. It is based on over a decade of research, including interviews with family members and Dickey’s letters home. A tribute to a true hero, A Final Valiant Act also includes the most detailed account of Operation Beacon Hill ever written.

A Path to War is the first in a series dedicated to the Marine Corps' involvement in Southeast Asia from the early 1960s until 1975. This commemorative publication covers the period from 1961 to 1965, a time when the Marine involvement in the region deepened from an advisory and supporting role to the amphibious landing near Da Nang in March 1965, which marked the first major commitment of U.S. ground forces to the war in Vietnam. Contains five color maps and numerous black and white photographs.

This book was released on 2016-08-09 with total page 666 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is the second volume in a series of chronological histories prepared by the Marine Corps History and Museums Division to cover the entire span of Marine Corps involvement in the Vietnam War. This volume details the Marine activities during 1965, the year the war escalated and major American combat units were committed to the conflict. The narrative traces the landing of the nearly 5,000-man 9th Marine Expeditionary Brigade and its transformation into the ΙII Marine Amphibious Force, which by the end of the year contained over 38,000 Marines. During this period, the Marines established three enclaves in South Vietnam’s northernmost corps area, I Corps, and their mission expanded from defense of the Da Nang Airbase to a balanced strategy involving base defense, offensive operations, and pacification. This volume continues to treat the activities of Marine advisors to the South Vietnamese armed forces but in less detail than its predecessor volume, U.S. Marines in Vietnam, 1954-1964; The Advisory and Combat Assistance Era.
Book Synopsis U.S. Marines In Vietnam: The Defining Year, 1968 by : Jack Shulimson
Download or read book U.S. Marines In Vietnam: The Defining Year, 1968 written by Jack Shulimson and published by Pickle Partners Publishing. This book was released on 2015-11-06 with total page 1619 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The year 1968 was the year of the Tet Offensive including Khe Sanh and Hue City. These were momentous events in the course of the war and they occurred in the first three months of the year. This book, however, documents that 1968 was more than just the Tet Offensive. The bloodiest month of the war for the U.S. forces was not January nor February 1968, but May 1968 when the Communists launched what was called their “Mini-Tet” offensive. This was followed by a second “Mini-Tet” offensive during the late summer which also was repulsed at heavy cost to both sides. By the end of the year, the U.S. forces in South Vietnam’s I Corps, under the III Marine Amphibious Force (III MAF), had regained the offensive. By December, enemy-initiated attacks had fallen to their lowest level in two years. Still, there was no talk of victory. The Communist forces remained a formidable foe and a limit had been drawn on the level of American participation in the war. Although largely written from the perspective of III MAF and the ground war in I Corps, the volume also treats the activities of Marines with the Seventh Fleet Special Landing Force, activities of Marine advisors to South Vietnamese forces, and other Marine involvement in the war. Separate chapters cover Marine aviation and the single manager controversy, artillery, logistics, manpower, and pacification.—E. H. SIMMONS, Brigadier General, U.S. Marine Corps (Retired)
