Book excerpt: A collection of "almost lost" episodes from the U.S. Navy in the Civil War--most of which have lain hidden for 150 years. Navy spies, cattle raids, deep inland recons and shore assaults as well as a daunting battle on the far side of the planet--Civil War history you've never read before. Included in this new research is the story of Monitor's Unknown Mission; the first all-black Navy crew (months before the Emancipation Proclamation); and the solution to the riddle of the First Battle of Fort Butler. There are no "big name" battles here--just the story of the many critical roles played by the U.S. Navy, told through small-unit actions. After a century and a half, these stories are something new in Civil War history.

Book excerpt: "Reluctant to shed her riding trousers and fully submerse herself in her role as a growing woman, Jana Brady joins the Union army in the fight for her country. Hoping for Sweet Glory, she cuts her hair and disguises herself as a young cavalryman, eager to fight the Rebels, aided by Leanne Perham, another girl from town who has donned the Union blues. While Jana enjoys the camaraderie within her unit, soldiering and nursing severely test her notions of glory in war. And the possibility of dying as a man hits home when she witnesses a man and his disguised bride die hand in hand on the battlefield. Jana determines to find a way home, with the blossoming incentive of renewing a relationship with Keeley, [an Irishman in the same unit], once she is again living as a woman."--Page 4 of cover.

Book excerpt: Love and Adventure Live On. . . After defying death during her wartime activities, Jana Brady leaps to accept President Andrew Johnson's bid for her and her soldier-sweetheart Keeley Cassidy to track down a two-million-dollar army payroll, stolen from the caboose of a prisoner train in the chaotic aftermath of its collision with a coal train. Her consent to the mission, without consulting Keeley, complicates their relationship. She is crushed when Keeley suggests they delay their wedding. Knowing Keeley fears Jana will choose adventure every time over a quieter life with him, Jana worries this venture will expose incompatibilities too irreconcilable to sustain a future together. This mission challenges their bond on every level, from a life-changing decision to adopt a runaway orphan to a frightening encounter with a bear. Will this adventure be the truest test of their love? Jana and Keeley discover that the train wreck reveals a more sinister plot behind the stolen payroll than mere petty thievery. They race against two Rebel train-wreck survivors, a bankrupt politician and his goons, and members of a powerful organization who aim to amass wealth to incite a second rebellion and perpetuate slavery. With help from Jana and Keeley's coonhound, Tracker, and cavalry comrades, Leanne and Charlie Watson, they sniff out the trail of the federal treasury and confront the thieves in a final showdown. Can Jana, Keeley, and friends outwit their foes to recoup the money? In this third book of Glory: A Civil War Series, Lisa Potocar continues to masterfully interweave adventure, romance, and suspense with a sweeping portrayal of post-Civil War times and women's expanding roles within it.
Book Synopsis Black Jacks by : W. Jeffrey. Bolster
Download or read book Black Jacks written by W. Jeffrey. Bolster and published by Harvard University Press. This book was released on 2009-06-30 with total page 349 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Few Americans, black or white, recognize the degree to which early African American history is a maritime history. W. Jeffrey Bolster shatters the myth that black seafaring in the age of sail was limited to the Middle Passage. Seafaring was one of the most significant occupations among both enslaved and free black men between 1740 and 1865. Tens of thousands of black seamen sailed on lofty clippers and modest coasters. They sailed in whalers, warships, and privateers. Some were slaves, forced to work at sea, but by 1800 most were free men, seeking liberty and economic opportunity aboard ship.Bolster brings an intimate understanding of the sea to this extraordinary chapter in the formation of black America. Because of their unusual mobility, sailors were the eyes and ears to worlds beyond the limited horizon of black communities ashore. Sometimes helping to smuggle slaves to freedom, they were more often a unique conduit for news and information of concern to blacks. But for all its opportunities, life at sea was difficult. Blacks actively contributed to the Atlantic maritime culture shared by all seamen, but were often outsiders within it. Capturing that tension, Black Jacks examines not only how common experiences drew black and white sailors together--even as deeply internalized prejudices drove them apart--but also how the meaning of race aboard ship changed with time. Bolster traces the story to the end of the Civil War, when emancipated blacks began to be systematically excluded from maritime work. Rescuing African American seamen from obscurity, this stirring account reveals the critical role sailors played in helping forge new identities for black people in America. An epic tale of the rise and fall of black seafaring, Black Jacks is African Americans' freedom story presented from a fresh perspective.

Book Synopsis Mr. Lincoln's Brown Water Navy by : Gary D. Joiner
Download or read book Mr. Lincoln's Brown Water Navy written by Gary D. Joiner and published by Rowman & Littlefield Publishers. This book was released on 2007-07-26 with total page 220 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Union inland navy that became the Mississippi Squadron is one of the greatest, yet least studied aspects of the Civil War. Without it, however, the war in the West may not have been won, and the war in the East might have lasted much longer and perhaps ended differently. The men who formed and commanded this large fighting force have, with few exceptions, not been as thoroughly studied as their army counterparts. The vessels they created were highly specialized craft which operated in the narrow confines of the Western rivers in places that could not otherwise receive fire support. Ironclads and gunboats protected army forces and convoyed much needed supplies to far-flung Federal forces. They patrolled thousands of miles of rivers and fought battles that were every bit as harrowing as land engagements yet inside iron monsters that created stifling heat with little ventilation. This book is about the intrepid men who fought under these conditions and the highly improvised boats in which they fought. The tactics their commanders developed were the basis for many later naval operations. Of equal importance were lessons learned about what not to do. The flag officers and admirals of the Mississippi Squadron wrote the rules for modern riverine warfare.
