Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book offers a systematic framework for thinking about the relationship between language and technology and an argument for interweaving thinking about technology with thinking about language. The main claim of philosophy of technology—that technologies are not mere tools and artefacts not mere things, but crucially and significantly shape what we perceive, do, and are—is re-thought in a way that accounts for the role of language in human technological experiences and practices. Engaging with work by Wittgenstein, Heidegger, McLuhan, Searle, Ihde, Latour, Ricoeur, and many others, the author critically responds to, and constructs a synthesis of, three "extreme", idealtype, untenable positions: (1) only humans speak and neither language nor technologies speak, (2) only language speaks and neither humans nor technologies speak, and (3) only technology speaks and neither humans nor language speak. The construction of this synthesis goes hand in hand with a narrative about subjects and objects that become entangled and constitute one another. Using Words and Things thus draws in central discussions from other subdisciplines in philosophy, such as philosophy of language, epistemology, and metaphysics, to offer an original theory of the relationship between language and (philosophy of) technology centered on use, performance, and narrative, and taking a transcendental turn.

Others, exhausted by perpetual outrage and shame-filled from constant comparison, are leaving social media altogether. So, how should Christians behave in this digital age? Is there a better way? Daniel Darling believes we need an approach that applies biblical wisdom to our engagement with social media, an approach that neither retreats from modern technology nor ignores the harmful ways in which Christians often engage publicly. In short, he believes that we can and should use our online conversations for good.

Advertising has developed over years becoming a manipulative source of information that uses our society's weaknesses in order to benefit financially. This book provides an insight into the world of manipulative advertising language, describing how word interactions influence consumer choices, revealing the most popular ways of advertising claim formation using certain language means. Advertisement examples used in the book are mostly beauty product advertisements that focus on women as a target audience as women are said to be an easy target thanks to their emotionality. The book will be interesting for both, those who trust advertisements (it will make you think twice before buying) and those who already don't.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Using English Words examines the impact that the life histories of people have on their vocabulary. Its starting point is the taken-for-granted fact that the vocabulary of English falls into two very different sections. Randolph Quirk mentions this striking incompatibility between the Anglo Saxon and the Latinate elements in English: "the familiar homely-sounding and typically very short words" that we learn very early in life and use for most everyday purposes; and "the more learned, foreign-sounding and characteristically rather long words" (1974, p. 138). It is mainly the second type of word that native speakers start learning relatively late in their use of English, usually in the adolescent years of education, and keep on learning. It is mainly the one type of word, rather than the other, that ESL/ EFL students have more difficulty with, depending on their language background. This book shows how discursive relations, outside education, 'position' people through their vocabularies. Some are prepared for easy entry into lifetime prospects of relative privilege and educational success, while others are denied entry. In writing this book, I share an aim with other writers who observe the many discontinuities that exist between discursive practices in communities outside schools, and the discursive demands that schools make (e. g. Hamilton et a1. [19931, Heath [1983], Luke [19941, Philips [1983], Romaine [1984], Scollon & Scollon [1981]).

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Help adolescents learn and use the academic words that will assist them in school and beyond. The author argues that “words worth using” must matter to adolescents’ authentic work in the disciplines and connect to their lived experiences. Rather than using a model of vocabulary instruction that positions students as passive recipients who must simply memorize definitions, Townsend outlines a metalinguistic approach that shows students how to learn words by using them in ways that are meaningful to their identity, language background, and individual interests. The book provides research-based instructional routines to support adolescents as they learn and use new words in their disciplinary learning. It explores how academic vocabulary can position students as “insiders” or “outsiders,” and how culturally sustaining instruction can welcome all students into discovering and using language. Words Worth Using will be a popular resource for teachers who feel stymied by the sheer volume of words they are expected to teach. Book Features: An engaging exploration of adolescents and the kinds of powerful word learning that endure.Metalinguistic awareness as an underleveraged approach to helping adolescents develop word knowledge in engaging ways. A culturally sustaining pedagogy framework with specific attention to emergent bilinguals.“Words Worth Using” boxes that share the etymology and morphology of many important words throughout the text.A careful review and explanation of research accompanied by classroom anecdotes, real-world examples, and templates for teachers and instructional leaders to use in their own contexts.

A transitional expression can change the whole meaning of a sentence. Therefore, you should choose the transition that best conveys your meaning. You should also avoid repetition and use different transition words or phrases in the same category if necessary. Placing transitional words: There are three options for placing transitional words: • The beginning of a sentence [Most common] • The middle of a sentence • The end of a sentence [Least Common] Example: Their products come with an insurance pack that covers accidental damage, theft, and breakage for a year. Furthermore, customers can also avail of an additional year of warranty. [Use of the transitional word ‘furthermore’ at the beginning of a sentence] Their products come with an insurance pack that covers accidental damage, theft, and breakage for a year. Customers, furthermore, can also avail of an additional year of warranty. [Use of the transitional word ‘furthermore’ in the middle of a sentence] Their products come with an insurance pack that covers accidental damage, theft, and breakage for a year. Customers can also avail of an additional year of warranty, furthermore. [Use of the transitional word ‘furthermore’ in the end of a sentence]
