Book excerpt: Excerpt from Using the Resources of the Country Church The American people are just beginning to realize the need of the conservation of natural resources. There is evidence that the nation is slowly awakening to the necessity of a wiser use of natural wealth. The pressure of economic circumstances is emphasizing for the more thoughtful the importance of conservation. This idea of a better use of our natural resources is of the utmost social value. It augurs well for our future as a nation. There is equal need of our taking heed of our moral resources. Men and women are more important than natural possessions. The greatest human wealth is morality. It is this which separates man from the animal and makes social life on the human plane possible. Morality represents a great social resource. It needs conservation, for upon its wise use depends human progress. The country especially needs to conserve its moral resources. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Institutional Work for the Country Church The State of Vermont furnishes a favorable field for the development of the country church. More distinctively than any other state, it is free from the dominance of city life and congested communities. And the record made by the churches of the state shows that they have been ready in some measure to take advantage of their peculiar situation. If there are no organizations that may bear the name Insti tutional there are many that can bear the name Inspirational, through whose quickening power society has developed along those lines that make for the uplift of all. The contributors to this book have been privileged to work in such churches as colabor ers, ministering and ministered unto; they haveshared in the prosperity of these organizations they understand their limitations; they appreciate their advantages. As practical workers, out of the wisdom gained by experience, they speak. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Rural Problem of the ChurchThe main point I wish to make to-day is that the so-called Rural Problem is not just another, but is the problem of our church for the present day. It is practically the only question before us which has a right to be called a problem; for the satisfactory settlement of this question will carry with it, to a large extent, the settlement of all questions, whether in church or state. No other question so well deserves the careful study and thought of this Presbytery, and my'one regret about to day's conference is that we have not some one in my place, with the exact knowledge of an expert, and the voice of a prophet, to set before us the cause of the rural dweller and convince us of the opportunity and danger of the time. If any proof of the importance of the rural problem were re quired, it is furnished by the fact that a National Conference on the subject was held in Columbus, Ohio, last December, attended by delegates from all parts of the United States, and opened by President Wilson in person. Ex-president Roose velt said some time ago that with the single exception of the conservation of our natural resources, which underlies the problem of rural life, there is no other material question of greater importance now before the American people. What is true of'the United States is-true of Canada. This is our first and greatest domestic problem, overlapping or including practically all others. It is, of course, nothing new in the world; exploitation of rural populations has been a primarycause of national instability since the beginning of history. Nor is the question one that concerns farmers and country ministers alone. The city is as much concerned in the social welfare of the rural population as are country people them selves. The city is in fact largely a product of the country. Genius is rarely born in the city, and probably nine-tenths of the nation's influential leaders come from the farm. I suspect that the city derives from the country half its brains, two thirds of its wealth and three-quarters of its character.About the PublisherForgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Unfinished Business of the Presbyterian Church in America IT is a good thing for each denomination to seek to determine as clearly as it can its own distinctive duty. Unless it does this it is not in a position to plan its proper courses Of action or to draw out and use the resources of its membership. It is in no presumptuous or vaunting Spirit that the different groups of Christians in our country to-day are seeking thus to ascertain each its own rightful share in the one great task. They are working together in more united and trustful relations than ever before and their work both separately and together will be far more effective by reason Of their sure discernment Of their own respective Obligations. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Country Church and the Rural Problem: The Carew Lectures at Hartford Theological Seminary The country church faces a crisis. The agriculture of the nineteenth century was individualistic, extensive, even exploitative, and only toward the close of the period developed highly organized commercial aspects. During the present century American agriculture promises to be put upon an intensive and scientific basis, co-operation will begin to supersede individual bargaining, and the welfare of the rural community instead of the profit of the individual farmer will be more and more the point of departure in all discussions and movements for rural betterment. The church, too, as it served the farming classes has been individualistic in its appeal. Its work has been one of extension; it has marched to the frontier with the frontiersman. It has even been exploitative of denominational pride and power. Undeniably it has done a great work. It has saved rural life for moral and spiritual ends. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Conservation of the Moral Resources of the Nation: A Comprehensive Study of Home Missions and Church Extension This book is a verbatim report of the proceedings of the recent parliaments held in the interest of the Board of Home Missions and Church Extension in Wisconsin, Illinois, Indiana, Missouri, Kansas, Oklahoma, Colorado, and in other states more remotely. The addresses are in full, and are given by men of first ability and experience. No more informed men on their various themes could be found. They have given their best years to the study and work of their various departments, many of them in actual service in the various missions spoken of and wrought out, hence their utterances are the results of actual contact with the work. Any man, layman or minister, cannot afford to be without this book for the understanding of his own country, his religious obligation, and his better knowing as a patriot what his full obligation is, and to the being a fully informed man on the work of the Church of God. Every family should have it in the home. It is an education to read its full pages for the children; for youth in preparation of Epworth League topics and the knowing of the acts of the Apostles of the Twentieth Century. The Compiler is indebted to the men and Mrs. Williams, for the permission to publish these addresses and lectures. We are trusting that in the churches renewed interest will be taken in saving America, and bringing it to Christ, for our nation's sake and the world's sake. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Issues of gender and sexuality are intrinsic to people’s experience: their sense of identity, their lives and the loving relationships that shape and sustain them. The life and mission of the Church of England – and of the worldwide Anglican Communion – are affected by the deep, and sometimes painful, disagreements about these matters, divisions brought into sharper focus because of society’s changing perspectives and practices, especially in relation to LGTBI+ people. Living in Love and Faith sets out to inspire people to think more deeply both about what it means to be human, and to live in love and faith with one another. It tackles the tough questions and the divisions among Christians about what it means to be holy in a society in which understandings and practices of gender, sexuality and marriage continue to change. Commissioned and led by the Bishops of the Church of England, the Living in Love and Faith project has involved many people across the Church and beyond, bringing together a great diversity and depth of expertise, conviction and experience to explore these matters by studying what the Bible, theology, history and the social and biological sciences have to say. After a Foreword from the Archbishops of Canterbury and York, the book opens with an invitation from the Bishops of the Church of England to embark on a learning journey in five parts: Part One sets current questions about human identity, sexuality, relationships and marriage in the context of God’s gift of life. Part Two takes a careful and dispassionate look at what is happening in the world with regard to identity, sexuality, relationships and marriage. Part Three explores current Christian thinking and discussions about human identity, sexuality, and marriage. In the light of the good news of Jesus Christ, how do Christians understand and respond to the trends observed in Part Two? Part Four considers what it means for us as individuals and as a church to be Christ-like when it comes to matters of identity, sexuality, relationships and marriage. Part Five invites the reader into a conversation between some of the people who have been involved in writing this book who, having engaged with and written Parts One to Four, nevertheless come to different conclusions. Amid the biblical, theological, historical and scientific exploration, each part includes Encounters with real, contemporary disciples of Christ whose stories raise questions which ask us to discern where God is active in human lives. The book ends with an appeal from the Bishops to join them in a period of discernment and decision-making following the publication of Living in Love and Faith. The Living in Love and Faith book is accompanied by a range of free digital resources including films, podcasts and an online library, together with Living in Love and Faith: The Course, a 5-session course which is designed to help local groups engage with the resources, also published by Church House Publishing.
