As a consequence, many heads and principals are actively restructuring, realigning and redesigning leadership practice in their school (Harris, 2008). While the terminology to describe such changes varies, the core principle is one of extending or sharing leadership practice. While scholars have long argued for the need to move beyond those at the top of organizations in order to examine leadership (Barnard, 1968; Katz and Kahn, 1966) until relatively recently, much of the school leadership literature has tended tofocusupontheheadortheprincipal.

This survey demonstrates that older reviews and meta-analyses were predominantly based on so-called ‘direct effect’ studies, while more recent studies have tried to quantify the indirect effects of leadership, mediated by other school variables. While acknowledging the relatively small total effect of leadership on student outcomes, the study does identify promising intermediary factors which, stimulated by specific leadership behaviours, impact on student performance. The book ends by drawing out wider implications for educational practice and policy, presented under headings such as ‘schools need leadership’, ‘the toolkit of the school leader as a meta-controller’, ‘the special case of turning around failing schools’ and ‘efficiency of school leadership’. How to achieve such learning communities is far from clear, but we believe the areas of problem-based learning (PBL) and organizational learning (OL) offer valuable clues. The indications are that the successful educational restructuring agenda depends on teams of leaders, whole staffs and school personnel, working together (i.e., OL) linking evidence and practice in genuine collaboration (i.e., PBL). The book is unique in that it is both about and uses these two concepts. The book is made up of four sections: 1.An introductory rational in which the case for using only quality evidence in school reform efforts is argued. Results from a quality research project are then presented. These results are organised around six questions: how is the concept of OL defined in schools ('teacher voice')? what leadership practices promote OL in schools ('teacher voice')? what are some outcomes of schooling other than academic achievement ('pupil voice')? what are the relationships between the non-academic and academic outcomes of schooling? does school leadership and/or organisational learning contribute to student outcomes? And, what other factors contribute to student outcomes? The section concludes with a plea that given the accumulation and consistent quality of the evidence from across systems and countries, we no longer need to involve ourselves with just impressions of effective leadership. We have a way forward that links leadership to organisational learning and improved student outcomes. 2.Advice for using the book. The reasons for the choice of problem-based learning as the vehicle for the professional development materials that form the major part of this book are detailed. Suggestions are then made for use of the book, including a one-day and two- day workshop, and advice on group development and warm-up activities for such group development before moving to the problem-based learning package in Section 3; 3.A problem based-learning, evidence informed, professional development package for aspiring and actual school leaders based on real schools and their leaders. 4.A challenge. The challenges of school systems are such that no one leader can manage the demands of daily leadership responsibilities without considerable assistance from the school staff. The purpose of this qualitative case study was to explore the connection between the implementation of distributed leadership dimensions, teacher practices, and student learning in schools with small learning communities. Three research questions guided the study to explore 50 case studies on the connection of distributed leadership, teacher practices, and student learning in high and low-performing schools. Data collection using content analysis and data analysis with pattern recognition yielded eight themes: shared vision; positive school culture and climate of trust; principal visibility; teacher empowerment; leadership practice; data-driven instruction; teachers as instructional leaders; and investment in professional development. The findings of the study indicated that many more high-performing schools were continually engaged with the dimensions of distributed leadership as compared to low-performing schools. The results of this study revealed that student achievement tends to exist in an environment characterized by shared decision through distributed leadership, a positive culture of trust and collaboration, group goal acceptance, teacher efficacy and knowledge through data driven professional development, and principals' distributed leadership practices.

This study examines how principals traditionally rely on the hero complex of school leadership and solely accept the responsibility of school improvement and accountability of student achievement. The research highlights the discussion of different definitions of distributed leadership and its impact on student learning. The researcher used the definition of distributed leadership posited by Spillane (2005) as "first and foremost about leadership practice rather than leaders or their roles, functions, routines, and structures" (p. 144). The discussion in this study addressed the gap in research, specifically how distributed leadership can be used as a strategy for school improvement. The purpose of this phenomenological qualitative study was to examine the use of distributed leadership practices such as delegation of tasks as well as building capacity as tools for school improvement. Twelve elementary school principals were interviewed using a researcher created interview protocol based on the research questions and the theoretical framework. The study produced ten findings: distributed leadership as an investment in stakeholders, teachers as leaders in schools, intelligence being the character trait that one should possess to those who are delegated to, professional development, assessments, non-instructional practices, supportive environments, volunteers, follow-up, and building capacity. Finally, this investigative study offered three conclusions and six recommendations for policy, practice, and further research.
