Book Synopsis Using a Dryer-drum in the Construction of Sulfur-extended-asphalt (SEA) Pavements by : Frank R. McCullagh

This book was released on 1980 with total page 36 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Sulfur-Extended-Asphalt (SEA) will become increasingly more important in the future as the supply of asphalt dwindles, the cost of asphalt increases and the sulfur supply exceeds demand. SEA binders had been used successfully in conventional stack plants and this study proves that these binders can also be used in dryer-drum plants. Emissions problems (SO2) did exist with the dryer-drum plant used, but with wet scrubber capability this problem can be solved. This study involved the placement of two test sections and the report presents a description of the work. As a result of this study, it is also advised that the dryer-drum plant's binder control system be calibrated before SEA concrete mix is produced, and also the water susceptibility of the mix be studied as part of the design.

Book excerpt: This report discusses the design, placement and preliminary evaluation of a sulfur extended asphalt pavement. Initial data on frictional characteristics, rideability and strength was also obtained. In 1981 an overlay consisting of sulfur extended asphalt (SEA) pavement was placed on the I-95 interstate system in Maine. Approximately 26,200 tons of the experimental pavement was used. Three different blend weights, 30/70, 20/80 and 10/90 of sulfur to asphalt, were incorporated in the project. The SEA pavement was mixed by the "Direct Method", first adding asphalt then sulfur, using and 8,000 pound batch plant. The SEA mix was found to produce low concentrations of Hydrogen Sulfide (H2S) and Sulfur Dioxide (SO2) and high concentrations of total suspended particulates (TSP) around the paver during the laydown operation.

Book excerpt: This report deals with pavement mixture designs and construction operation of field trials on U.S. 69 north of Lufkin, Texas. The binders used in this field trial consisted of pure asphalt cement for the control sections and 30/70 weight percent of a sulphur/asphalt emulsion as the test binder. All elements of the structural (thickness) design were produced in pairs for comparison purposes with the exception of two thinner sections selected to possibly show distress in two or three years. Otherwise, the thickness designs used in the test sections were those specified by the State Department of Highways and Public Transportation in the conventional section of this highway. Preconstruction laboratory evaluations of mixture properties and field laboratory control measurements are included as a part of this report.

Book excerpt: This report documents post-construction performance of a sulfur-extended asphalt (SEA) pavement and a conventional pavement used as a control, monitored over a 3-year period. The SEA pavement used 30-percent sulfur by total weight of the binder. Both pavements were placed under New York State specifications during the summer of 1980 on routes 118 and 202 in Westchester County, New York. After 3 years, overall condition of both the SEA and control pavements was satisfactory. The two did not differ significantly in deflection, rutting, friction, or aggregate degradation. Data obtained from analysis of pavement cores showed that the stability of the SEA mix was equal to or higher than that of the control at all ages. Similarly, its resilient modulus was greater at all ages and temperatures. Although tensile strength ratios measured for both mixes indicated a potential for stripping, virtually none was observed in any of the field cores for either pavement at any age.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This report documents the design, placement, and collection of initial data from a sulfur-extended-asphalt (SEA) pavement and a conventional pavement used as a control. The SEA pavement used 30-percent sulfur by total weight of the binder. Both pavements were placed under New York State specifications during the summer of 1980 on Rtes 118 and 202 adjoining the Amawalk Reservoir in Westchester County. Mix temperatures, hot-bin gradations, and toxic emissions were monitored at the plant and the site throughout placement. Aggregates were collected from the hot bin during production of the control and SEA mixes for use in a Marshall mix design. Cores were extracted from both SEA and control pavements 1 month after placement for laboratory testing. Pavement surface properties were also examined after 1 month of service. A Marshall mix design based on hot-bin aggregate gradations was prepared for both the control and SEA mixes after the fact, and it was found that both had been placed at a binder content less than optimum.

This book was released on 1981 with total page 72 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Sulfur-Extended-Asphalt (SEA) binders save asphalt, a potential energy source, by replacing some asphalt in conventional flexible pavement mixes with sulfur. These new binders appear to possess properties comparable to asphalt. The guideline manual provides the highway community in both public and private organizations with the most definitive state-of-the-art guidelines extant for using these binders. Information on design, construction, quality control, equipment, mixing plants, specifications, and safety is included.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Engineers have long been aware of the cementing properties of sulfur. However, very little interest was shown in substituting sulfur for asphalt cement until the oil embargo in the early 1970s. The first sulfur-extended asphalt (SEA) concrete pavement for public usage was completed in 1975, in Lufkin, Texas. Since that time, 68 test sections throughout the United States have been constructed and 18 of these were monitored by the Federal Highway Administration's (FHWA) Demonstration Projects Program, under Project No. 54 entitled Sulfur Extended Asphalt. This report provides a brief overview of sulfur availability and use and summarizes the results of field experiences gained through this demonstration project"--Technical report documentation p.

Download or read book Sulfur Extended Asphalt Pavement Evaluation for Baker River Highway, Washington written by and published by . This book was released on 1983 with total page 84 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The design, construction, and initial evaluation of the sulphur extended asphalt (SEA) pavement on the Baker River Highway near Concrete, Washington, is summarized in this paper. The initial design testing indicated that the resilient modulus of the SEA mixtures varies not only with SEA ratio but also with time after mixing and compaction. This resulted in using a 20/80 sulphur/asphalt binder ratio. A unique construction feature of this project was the manner in which sulphur was added to the hot-mix. Dry, bulk sulphur was introduced directly into the asphalt weigh bucket (batch plant) for melting.
