Book excerpt: AbstractA hydrodynamic-settling device was installed in 2004 to treat stormwater runoff from a roof and parking lot located at the Water Utility Administration Building in Madison, Wis. The U.S. Geological Survey, in cooperation with the Wiscon-sin Department of Natural Resources, the City of Madison, cities in the Waukesha Permit Group, Hydro International, Earth Tech, Inc., National Sanitation Foundation International, and the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency, monitored the device from November 2005 through September 2006 to evaluate it as part of the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency's Environmental Technology Verification Program. Twenty-three runoff events monitored for flow volume and water quality at the device's inlet and outlet were used to cal-culate the percentage of pollutant reduction for the device.
Book Synopsis Designing Small Parks by : Ann Forsyth
Download or read book Designing Small Parks written by Ann Forsyth and published by John Wiley & Sons. This book was released on 2005-10-24 with total page 224 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Designing Small Parks: A Manual for Addressing Social and Ecological Concerns provides guidelines for building better parks by integrating design criteria with current social and natural science research. Small parks are too often relegated to being the step-child of municipal and metropolitan open space systems because of assumptions that their small size and isolation limits their recreational capacity and makes them ecologically less valuable than large city and county parks. This manual is arranged around twelve topics that represent key questions, contradictions, or tensions in the design of small parks. Topics cover fundamental issues for urban parks, natural systems, and human aspects. Also included are useful case studies with alternative design solutions using three different approaches for integrating research findings into small urban park design.

Book Synopsis Urban Stormwater Management in the United States by : National Research Council
Download or read book Urban Stormwater Management in the United States written by National Research Council and published by National Academies Press. This book was released on 2009-03-17 with total page 611 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The rapid conversion of land to urban and suburban areas has profoundly altered how water flows during and following storm events, putting higher volumes of water and more pollutants into the nation's rivers, lakes, and estuaries. These changes have degraded water quality and habitat in virtually every urban stream system. The Clean Water Act regulatory framework for addressing sewage and industrial wastes is not well suited to the more difficult problem of stormwater discharges. This book calls for an entirely new permitting structure that would put authority and accountability for stormwater discharges at the municipal level. A number of additional actions, such as conserving natural areas, reducing hard surface cover (e.g., roads and parking lots), and retrofitting urban areas with features that hold and treat stormwater, are recommended.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Stormwater has become the major pollution source to the receiving water bodies in many urban areas due to increased development and improved control of point source pollution. Polluted urban stormwater contains a number of hazardous constituents, such as heavy metals and polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAH). These pollutants are to a considerable extent associated with solids and can therefore be removed from the stormwater through sedimentation and particle attachment to aquatic vegetation. Due to this fact, filtration has frequently been used as a method for the treatment of stormwater. Information regarding particle characteristics and associated pollutants in stormwater is therefore of great importance to engineers involved of the design of Best Management Practices (BMPs). There are two objectives of this research. The first one was to investigate the inflow and outflow particle characteristics (such as Particle size distribution (PSD), Volume distribution, Suspended sediment concentration (SSC) and Total suspended solids (TSS)) associated with various filtration BMPs throughout Austin, TX that receive stormwater drainage from a highway and parking lots. The BMP used at these sites were the sedimentation filters also known as Austin sand filter and a sand beach bio-filtration pond. The PSD of commercial and multi family residential zone runoff was measured in four storm events in 2009 rainy season. An experimental protocol was developed to measure the PSD carried by street runoff and to achieve repeatable and reliable results. Measurements of particle characteristics at the filter inflow and outflow for several storm events were carried out. The influent and effluent samples were taken at different time intervals for each storm events. A total of 72 grab samples were analyzed from the three monitoring sites. In each storm event the, particle concentration decreased rapidly in the early part of the storm and then declined more slowly throughout the storm. Particle concentration was correlated with total suspended solids. The second objective was to compare the performance of several types of filtration systems --City of Austin sand filter (COA), COA biofilter mix, and a biofilter with mortar sand media that is consistent with the filtration recommendations of the Facility for Advancing Water Biofiltration (FAWB). The Facility for Advancing Water Biofiltration (FAWB) was formed in Australia in mid-2005 as an unincorporated joint venture between the Institute for Sustainable Water Resources (ISWR), Monash University and EDAW Australia (previously Ecological Engineering). The COA sand filter is currently used at numerous sites in Austin whereas the other two designs are experimental.

Book excerpt: Pavements are the most ubiquitous of all man-made structures, and they have an enormous impact on environmental quality. They are responsible for hydrocarbon pollutants, excess runoff, groundwater decline and the resulting local water shortages, temperature increases in the urban "heat island," and for the ability of trees to extend their roots in

Download or read book PAHs written by Peter E. T. Douben and published by John Wiley & Sons. This book was released on 2003-07-25 with total page 404 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs), or polyarenes, are one of the largest and most structurally diverse class of organic molecules known. High percentages of polyarenes, representing a wide range of molecular sizes and structural types, are present in coal tars and petroleum residues. The major sources of PAHs are crude oil, coal and oil shale. The fuels produced from these fossil sources constitute the primary source of energy for the industrial nations of the world, and the petrochemicals from these raw materials are the basis of the synthetic fibre and plastics industries. PAHs are however, widespread pollutants and their impact on the environment and human health must be monitored and controlled. This book will review and assess our scientific understanding of the ecological exposure and effects PAHs have in different environments and habitats. It will accomplish this by taking the recipients of the pollution in the environment as starting points and working its way back through pathways to access what is required for our understanding of effects and rationale for control. Although this book will concentrate on ecological exposure of PAHs, the general impacts of PAHs on human populations will be touched upon. It is thought to be the first book to focus on the ecological aspects of PAHs.
