Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume consists of a collection of essays written by Professor Byrnes between 1956 and 1988. The papers vary considerably in focus and include policy issues that were significant at the time, with the Cold War analyses around the post-war containment theory. In addition, there is a consistent viewpoint and argument in Byrnes reflections on East-West relations. A central theme throughout the collection is the essential correctness of U.S. foreign policy toward the Soviet Union and Eastern Europe between 1946 and 1988.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "This volume is part of a Foreign Relations subseries that documents the most important foreign policy issues of the Jimmy Carter administration. The focus of this volume is on U.S. policy toward the Communist countries of Eastern Europe, except Poland. Documentation on Poland will be published in a separate volume. The volume illustrates the Carter administration's efforts to transform the long-standing U.S. policy of differentiation between Eastern European nations by including human rights performance in its policy assessment. This allowed for a warming of relations with countries that exhibited internally liberal policies, even if its foreign policy continued to be viewed as subservient to Soviet interests. The administration continued to support Romania as a Communist-bloc critic of the Soviet Union, despite strained relations over a series of high-profile defections, and planned for support of Yugoslavia's integrity and sovereignty after the death of Josip Broz Tito. U.S. relations with Bulgaria, Czechoslovakia, and the German Democratic Republic remained distant throughout the administration, but the modified policy of differentiation led to the return of the Crown of St. Stephen to Hungary. The administration also expanded broadcasting toward Eastern Europe and the Soviet Union, especially following the Soviet invasion of Afghanistan"--Publisher's description

Book excerpt: "This volume analyzes US policy towards communist-ruled Poland in the fields of diplomacy, economy, culture, and public diplomacy. It highlights the limitations in developing cooperation between democratic and non-democratic countries resulting from the Cold War conflict. No comprehensive account of US policy towards Poland from 1956-1968 has emerged in historiography. This book aims to answer why, since the political changes of the Polish October 1956, Washington ceased to see Polish affairs as "Soviet-related matters." Instead, it recognized communist-ruled Poland as a separate political entity among other Kremlin-dependent states in Eastern Europe. This policy, introduced by the Dwight D. Eisenhower administration, was continued by his successors John F. Kennedy and Lyndon B. Johnson. Recently declassified US and Polish archival sources allow the presentation of more considerations around the decision-making mechanisms by presidential administrations regarding communist Poland after 1956. They also reveal the dependence of the implementation of US actions on the climate of international relations. Moreover, they can now explain how Poland became an "open window" towards the Soviet bloc and a model example of the changes in the US policy of diversifying its approach to Eastern European countries under Soviet control in the next decades"--

Book excerpt: This volume contains essays that focus on the intertwined themes of thought patterns and political realities examined against the backdrop of a changing Europe. Three essays outline the new thinking of superpowers since 1985: the key changes reflected in Gorbachev's approach to the West; the cost-benefit reasons for his willingness to let East Europe go in 1989 and ways in which the West can become more involved in the region; and the parallel reasons for the decline of U.S. and Soviet influence in the Third World. Other essays show how old realities are emerging at the same time that thought patterns are experiencing change: German-Russian relationship is becoming the Central European reality; the new Europe is being erected on the traditional foundation of connections among Germany, France, and Great Britain; and the old Czech-Polish ties are at the innermost center of the new Europe. Book excerpt: For better or worse--be it militarily, politically, economically, technologically, or culturally--Americans have had a profound role in shaping the wider world beyond them. The United States has been a savior to some, a curse to others, but either way such views are often based on a caricature of American actions and intentions. American Foreign Relations, then, is a subject of immense global importance that provokes strong emotions and much debate, but often based on deep misunderstanding. This Very Short Introduction analyzes the key episodes, themes, and individuals in the history of American foreign relations. While discussing diplomacy and the periods of war that have shaped national and international history, it also addresses such topics as industrialization, globalization, imperialism, and immigration. Covering the Revolution through the War on Terror, it examines the connections between domestic politics and foreign affairs, as well as the importance of ideals and values. Sharply written and highly readable, American Foreign Relations offers a clear-eyed narrative of America's role in the world and how it has evolved over time. ABOUT THE SERIES: The Very Short Introductions series from Oxford University Press contains hundreds of titles in almost every subject area. These pocket-sized books are the perfect way to get ahead in a new subject quickly. Our expert authors combine facts, analysis, perspective, new ideas, and enthusiasm to make interesting and challenging topics highly readable.
