Book excerpt: This manual, 2021 US Army Physician Assistant Handbook Second Edition Volume 2: Chapters 41 - 70, takes into account the changes in military medicine since the first edition was published in 2018. A comprehensive transformation occurred with the move of Army medical training to TRADOC, the transition of military medical treatment facilities to the Defense Health Agency, and research activities aligning with Army Futures Command. Army PAs are essential in this time of transition, using their clinical, educational, research, leadership, and management skills to maintain the highest quality of medical training as the command structure changes. Today, Army PAs are integral to training activity in numerous positions and roles at MEDCoE: Interservice PA Program Director/ Associate professors, combat medicine training instructors, and commanders of training companies and battalions. Army PAs are contributing to readiness of the force by training Soldiers in tactical and technical competencies to build and sustain operational capabilities. Army PAs are critical to Army Medicine's ability to ensure the health of the maneuver element during competition, preserve Soldier lethality in conflict, and facilitate a return to competition.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Tactical Combat Casualty Care (TCCC) has saved hundreds of lives during our nation's conflicts in Iraq and Afghanistan. Nearly 90 percent of combat fatalities occur before a casualty reaches a medical treatment facility. Therefore, the prehospital phase of care is needed to focus on reducing the number of combat deaths. However, few military physicians have had training in this area and, at the onset of hostilities, most combat medics, corpsmen, and pararescue personnel in the U.S. military have been trained to perform battlefield trauma care through civilian-based trauma courses. These courses are not designed for the prehospital combat environment and do not reflect current practices in the area of prehospital care. TCCC was created to train Soldiers and medical personnel on current best practices for medical treatment from the point of injury to evacuation to Role 3 facilities

Book excerpt: A longtime standard for military healthcare personnel, the second edition of Military Advanced Regional Anesthesia and Analgesia Handbook (MARAA) has been thoroughly revised and updated. Although the MARAA handbook initially gained its reputation as a useful resource for managing pain associated with battlefield trauma, its beautifully illustrated step-by-step guidance provides pertinent and practical guidance for managing vital acute pain services in all civilian and military clinical settings. Opening chapters review equipment, local anesthesia and additives, and physics of ultrasound and nerve stimulation. Much of the book is devoted to step-by-step guidance on performing various regional anesthesia nerve blocks organized by pertinent neuroanatomy, use of nerve stimulation, and use of ultrasound. The concluding group of chapters discusses organization of the acute pain service and staff, a review of multidisciplinary care, basics of pediatric regional anesthesia, first-aid acupuncture, and more.
