Book excerpt: The objective of the US Army Dugway Proving Ground, Utah, Environmental and Ecology Branch surveillance program has been to monitor the proving ground and adjacent areas for adverse impacts attributable to human activities or natural events, and to preclude deliterious effects of testing and related operations. As in previous years, the experimental observations recorded in this report show that no adverse impact occurred as a result of the military and civilian activities conducted at the proving ground from 1977 through 1979. It was determined that (a) there were no abnormal fluctuations of the local jackrabbit populations, (b) the incidence of tularemia in jackrabbits appeared to decline slightly, (c) the incidence of tularemia in other species remained relatively unchanged, and (d) the levels of erythrocytic acetylcholinesterase of cattle and sheep surveyed were well within the baselines established for these animals. As a result of In-house Laboratory Independent Research, epidemiological conditions responsible for maintaining California encephalitis virus in western Utah were determined. In addition valuable data were obtained which extend and refine the historical record of the dynamics of the jackrabbit population. (Author).

Book excerpt: In accordance with the National Environmental Policy Act (NEPA), all projects at Dugway Proving Ground (DPG) are evaluated for their potential for causing adverse environmental impact. Environmental studies for other U.S. Army installations include baseline ecological surveys, demography of jackrabbits and selected rodents. These programs have provided population and toxicological baseline data on wildlife. Investigations have been made of hazards associated with bacterial aerosols generated by cooling towers using biocontaminated wastewater. The organic nitrogen wastes generated by manufacture of Army explosives have been studied with regard to aeration rates, residence times, nutrient requirements and other physical and biological factors. A handbook for evaluating ecological effects of pollution on DARCOM installations has been prepared for the Pollution Abatement and Environmental Control Technical Lead Laboratory. Consultation services concerning environmental and epidemiological problems and mosquito control were provided to the Facilities Engineering Directorate of U.S. Army, Yuma Proving Ground, Arizona.

Book excerpt: Environmental and ecological studies concerned with the environmental impact of military activities upon the ecosystems surrounding DPG, and the safety of human communities and agricultural resources have continued and are reported in two volumes; the first fulfilling mission tasks, the second on environmental impact studies. Accumulated data for baseline demography on selected, common rodents and jackrabbits have been analyzed in greater depth than they were previously. Epidemiology and toxicology information has been obtained from these native fauna specimens as well as from domestic livestock and wild horses. Methods of detecting tularemia have been improved. Determination of baseline erythrocyte acetylcholinesterase (AChE) activity levels in wildlife and livestock has been completed. No significant differences were found in levels of AChE by geographic area. The AChE levels in livestock were significantly higher in early spring than in fall collections, but wildlife exhibited minimal seasonal differences. These AChE baseline values have been applied to the investigations of known or suspected exposure events. No toxicolgical impact has been detected, but work will continue to determine the effect of organophosphorus on the environment.
