Book excerpt: RAHIM Sufi/Bhakti Poet & Khan-i-Khanan of Mughal Emperor Akbar & his Circle of Poets SELECTED POEMS Translation & Introduction Paul Smith 'Abd'ur Rahim Khan-i-Khanan (1556-1627) was a Sufi/Bhakti poet and scholar and linguist and great patron of the arts under Emperor Akbar and under Emperor Jahangir. He was the commander-in-chief of the army of Akbar against Sultan Muzaffar of Gujarat. Rahim was known for his strange manner of giving alms to the poor. He never looked at the person he was giving alms to, keeping his gaze downwards in all humility. He was famous for his poetry and generosity even at the court of Abbas the great, the Persian Shah of the time. His ghazals are said to have surpassed those of Naziri and many are Sufi and Bhakti in nature. He also composed many dohas in Hindi (Braj Bahasa... an early form of Urdu). Popularly known as Rahim and immortalised through his dohas or couplets, Rahim was among the most important ministers in Akbar's court. His tomb sits prominently along the Mathura Road, formerly the Mughal Grand Trunk Road, and is in close proximity to the Dargah of Nizam ud-din Auliya and Humayun's Tomb in South Delhi. Here is a selection of ruba'is, a ghazal, songs on Krishna, but mainly of his dohas, a rhymed couplet that is a wise, complete thought in itself. He was with Kabir, Tulsidas, Baba Farid and Vrind a master of this simple but powerful form. The correct rhyme-structure has been kept in all poems. Large Format Paperback 7" x 10" 268 pages. Book excerpt: SHAHIN OF SHIRAZ The Jewish Sufi Poet of the Time of Hafiz SELECTED POEMS Translation & Introduction Paul Smith Maulana Shahin of Shiraz was a 14th century Jewish Persian Poet who composed only masnavis in the Persian language but written in the Hebrew script. He was alive in his birthplace of Shiraz during the reign of the Il-khanid sultan of Baghdad Abu Said (1316-1335) at whose court was Obeyd Zakani and Khaju Kermani. He is said to have greatly admired three great masnavi writers who came before him, Firdausi, Nizami and Rumi and to have been much influenced by Sufism. It is quite possible that although he would have lived in the large Jewish quarter of Shiraz at the time, with the liberality that existed in that city of about 100,000 (within the walls and another 100,000 outside) he would most likely have come into contact with other poets living there including Hafiz (see Appendix), Obeyd Zakani, Khaju Kermani and Ruh Attar and Jahan Khatun. His first epic masnavi Musa-Nama, 'The Book of Moses' (10,000 couplets) was composed in 1327 and he followed that with Ardashir-Nama, 'The Book of Ardashir and Esther' (9000 couplets) six years later. It would be another 25 years for his last masterpiece to appear in 1358, his Bereshit-Nama, 'Book of Genesis' (8,700 couplets). In his 'Book of Moses' (see cover illustration) he turns Moses into an epic hero like those in Firdausi's Shah-Nama that seems to have been a great influence on him. He should be known as one of the great masnavi Sufi poets of Iran. The form of the masnavi has been kept. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: THE BOOK OF MIR Selected Poems of Mir Taqi Mir Translation and Introduction Paul Smith Mir Taqi Mir (1723 - 1810) was the leading Urdu poet of the eighteenth century and one of the pioneers of Urdu. He was one of the principal poets of the Delhi school of the Urdu ghazal. He was born in Agra and left for Delhi after the death of his father whose emphasis on the importance of love and the value of compassion remained with him, imbuing his poetry. At Delhi he finished his education and joined a group of nobles as a court-poet. At 17 he had a mental break-down and suffered from bouts of madness all his life. After the sack of Delhi he eventually moved to the court in Lucknow where he stayed for the remainder of his life. Like many Urdu poets Mir's literary reputation is from his ghazals. After moving to Lucknow his daughter died, then his son and wife. This, with other earlier setbacks, lends a strong pathos and melancholy to much of his writing. Like Obeyd Zakani and others before him Mir practiced the Malamati or 'Blameworthy' aspect of Sufism. He was a prolific poet, his complete works or Kulliyat consisting of 6 Divans, containing 13,585 couplets comprising all kinds of poetic forms: ghazals, masnavis, qit'as, ruba'is, etc He also composed in Persian a Divan, a unique autobiography and a book on Urdu Poets and a book of spiritual advice for his son. This is the largest selection in English of most forms of his poetry with correct form and meaning kept, published for the first time. Introduction: Mir's Life & Times & Poetry, Selected Bibliography, On the Various Poetic Forms Mir used. Yet despite its recognition as a shared language across the Islamic world and beyond, its scope, impact, and mechanisms remain underexplored. A world historical inquiry into pre-modern cosmopolitanism, The Persianate World traces the reach and limits of Persian as a Eurasian language in a comprehensive survey of its geographical, literary, and social frontiers. From Siberia to Southeast Asia, and between London and Beijing, this book shows how Persian gained, maintained, and finally surrendered its status to imperial and vernacular competitors. Fourteen essays trace Persian’s interactions with Bengali, Chinese, Turkic, Punjabi, and other languages to identify the forces that extended “Persographia,” the domain of written Persian. Spanning the ages of expansion and contraction, The Persianate World offers a critical survey of both the supports and constraints of one of history’s key languages of global exchange.

Book excerpt: In the early modern world, the Safavid, Ottoman, and Mughal empires sprawled across a vast swath of the earth, stretching from the Himalayas to the Indian Ocean to the Mediterranean Sea. The diverse and overlapping literate communities that flourished in these three empires left a lasting legacy on the political, religious, and cultural landscape of the Near East and India. This volume is a comprehensive sourcebook of newly translated texts that shed light on the intertwined histories and cultures of these communities, presenting a wide range of source material spanning literature, philosophy, religion, politics, mysticism, and visual art in thematically organized chapters. Scholarly essays by leading researchers provide historical context for closer analyses of a lesser-known era and a framework for further research and debate. The volume aims to provide a new model for the study and teaching of the region’s early modern history that stands in contrast to the prevailing trend of examining this interconnected past in isolation.

Book excerpt: Mirza Asadullah Khan (1797–1869), popularly, Ghalib, is the most influential poet of the Urdu language. He is noted for the ghazals he wrote during his lifetime, which have since been interpreted and sung by different people in myriad ways. Ghalib’s popularity has today extended beyond the Indian subcontinent to the Hindustani diaspora around the world. In this book, Gopi Chand Narang studies Ghalib’s poetics by tracing the archetypical roots of his creative consciousness and enigmatic thought in Buddhist dialectical philosophy, particularly in the concept of shunyata. He underscores the importance of the Mughal era’s Sabke Hindi poetry, especially through Bedil, whom Ghalib considered his mentor. The author also engages with Ghalib criticism that has flourished since his death and analyses the important works of the poet, including pieces from early Nuskhas and Divan-e Ghalib, strengthening this central argument. Much has been written about Ghalib’s life and his poetry. A marked departure from this dominant trend, Narang’s book looks at Ghalib from different angles and places him in the galaxy of the great Eastern poets, stretching far beyond the boundaries of India and the Urdu language.
