Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The idea of writing a textbook on urban surveying and mapping originated with the Commission on Cartography of the Pan American Institute of Geography and History (PAIGH) because of the urgent need for planned and integrated surveying and mapping in urban communities of the American Hemisphere. It is obvious, however, that, with the exception of some European countries, the same situation exists in most cities of the world. The undersigned was asked to undertake the task. The task was not simple. The only available comprehensive text in the field 1 is Geodezja Miejska , which was published recently in Poland and reached the authors only after most of the present text was written. It is tailored to a very specific market and different requirements. Although it is an impressive book, it differs vastly from our own approach. Other reference texts are fragmentary or obsolete. During the last two decades, revolutionary changes have occurred in survey ing and mapping technology which have had a profound effect on actual procedures. In addition, the traditional concepts of urban surveying and map ping are undergoing rapid evolution. It is recognized that administration and planning require a great variety of continuously updated information which must be correlated with the actual physical fabric of the community, as de termined by surveying and mapping. Modern urban surveying and mapping is therefore the foundation of the broad and dynamic information system that is indispensable in any rational municipal effort.

Book excerpt: The Glossary of Mapping Sciences, a joint publication of the American Congress on Surveying and Mapping (ACSM), American Society for Photogrammetry and Remote Sensing (ASPRS), and American Society of Civil Engineers (ASCE), contains approximately 10,000 terms that cover the broad professional areas of surveying, mapping and remote sensing. Based on over 150 sources, this glossary west through an extensive review process that included individual experts from the related subject fields and a variety of U.S. federal agencies such as the U.S.Geological Survey. This comprehensive review process helped to ensure the accuracy of the document. The Glossary of Mapping Sciences will find widespread use throughout the related professions and serve as a vehicle to standardize the terminology of the mapping sciences.

Book excerpt: While engineers and surveyors are not urban planners, they are often engaged in urban development. Therefore, a high degree of competence in civil engineering specialties such as surveying and mapping, highway and transportation engineering, water resources engineering, environmental engineering, and, particularly, municipal engineering requires an understanding of urban development problems and urban planning objectives, principles, and practices. With this in mind, City Planning for Civil Engineers, Environmental Engineers, and Surveyors focuses on areas of urban planning with which civil and environmental engineers and surveyors are most likely to come into contact or conflict, in which engineers and surveyors may be required to participate, and for which engineers may be required to provide necessary leadership. The text stresses basic concepts and principles of practice involved in urban planning as most widely practiced, particularly in small and medium-sized communities. It introduces engineering students to land-use planning as a foundation for infrastructure systems planning and development. It also presents plan implementation devices such as zoning, land subdivision control, official mapping, and capital improvement programming. It describes the factors affecting good land subdivision design and improvement. In addition, the text illustrates the importance of good mapping and control surveys for planning purposes. Written from the perspective that cities are social and economic as well as physical entities, the book offers a historical context for urban planning. There are a large number of texts on the subject of urban planning, but most generally do not address in any comprehensive way the engineering problems encountered in urban planning. This book delineates these problems and stresses the importance of close cooperation between civil engineers and planning professionals to achieving effective urban planning. Armed with this information, students can become more knowledgeable participants in the urban planning process and more effective members of urban planning teams and governmental and consulting agency staff.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: For more than thirty years, the History of Cartography Project has charted the course for scholarship on cartography, bringing together research from a variety of disciplines on the creation, dissemination, and use of maps. Volume 6, Cartography in the Twentieth Century, continues this tradition with a groundbreaking survey of the century just ended and a new full-color, encyclopedic format. The twentieth century is a pivotal period in map history. The transition from paper to digital formats led to previously unimaginable dynamic and interactive maps. Geographic information systems radically altered cartographic institutions and reduced the skill required to create maps. Satellite positioning and mobile communications revolutionized wayfinding. Mapping evolved as an important tool for coping with complexity, organizing knowledge, and influencing public opinion in all parts of the globe and at all levels of society. Volume 6 covers these changes comprehensively, while thoroughly demonstrating the far-reaching effects of maps on science, technology, and society—and vice versa. The lavishly produced volume includes more than five hundred articles accompanied by more than a thousand images. Hundreds of expert contributors provide both original research, often based on their own participation in the developments they describe, and interpretations of larger trends in cartography. Designed for use by both scholars and the general public, this definitive volume is a reference work of first resort for all who study and love maps.

Book excerpt: This open access book is the first to systematically introduce the principles of urban informatics and its application to every aspect of the city that involves its functioning, control, management, and future planning. It introduces new models and tools being developed to understand and implement these technologies that enable cities to function more efficiently – to become ‘smart’ and ‘sustainable’. The smart city has quickly emerged as computers have become ever smaller to the point where they can be embedded into the very fabric of the city, as well as being central to new ways in which the population can communicate and act. When cities are wired in this way, they have the potential to become sentient and responsive, generating massive streams of ‘big’ data in real time as well as providing immense opportunities for extracting new forms of urban data through crowdsourcing. This book offers a comprehensive review of the methods that form the core of urban informatics from various kinds of urban remote sensing to new approaches to machine learning and statistical modelling. It provides a detailed technical introduction to the wide array of tools information scientists need to develop the key urban analytics that are fundamental to learning about the smart city, and it outlines ways in which these tools can be used to inform design and policy so that cities can become more efficient with a greater concern for environment and equity.
