Book Synopsis How to Lose the Hounds by : Celeste Winston
Download or read book How to Lose the Hounds written by Celeste Winston and published by Duke University Press. This book was released on 2023-09-29 with total page 110 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In How to Lose the Hounds Celeste Winston explores marronage—the practice of flight from and placemaking beyond slavery—as a guide to police abolition. She examines historically Black maroon communities in the Maryland suburbs of Washington, DC, that have been subjected to violent excesses of police power from slavery until the present day. Tracing the long and ongoing historical geography of Black freedom struggles in the face of anti-Black police violence in these communities, Winston shows how marronage provides critical lessons for reimagining public safety and community well-being. These freedom struggles take place in what Winston calls maroon geographies—sites of flight from slavery and the spaces of freedom produced in multigenerational Black communities. Maroon geographies constitute part of a Black placemaking tradition that asserts life-affirming forms of community. Winston contends that maroon geographies operate as a central method of Black flight, holding ground, and constructing places of freedom in ways that imagine and plan a world beyond policing.
Book Synopsis The Urban Land Nexus and the State by : A. J. Scott
Download or read book The Urban Land Nexus and the State written by A. J. Scott and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2013-02-01 with total page 275 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book was first published in 1980. In this book, the author has tried to establish the main guidelines of a determinate analysis of the phenomena of urbanization and planning, in two principal stages. Firstly, the attempt to identify something of the broad social structure and logic within which these phenomena are embedded, and from which they ultimately draw their character. Second, to attempt to discover in detail the ways in which these phenomena appear within society, assume a specific internal order, and change through time.

Book Synopsis Urban Renewal and Resistance by : Mary E. Triece
Download or read book Urban Renewal and Resistance written by Mary E. Triece and published by Lexington Books. This book was released on 2016-08-26 with total page 202 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Urban Renewal and Resistance: Race, Space, and the City in the Late Twentieth to Early Twenty-First Century examines how urban spaces are rhetorically constructed through discourses that variously justify or resist processes of urban growth and renewal. This book combines insights from critical geography, urban studies, and communication to explore how urban spaces, like Detroit and Harlem, are rhetorically structured through neoliberal discourses that mask the racialized nature of housing and health in American cities. The analysis focuses on city planning documents, web sites, media accounts, and draws on insights from personal interviews in order to pull together a story of city growth and its consequences, while keeping an eye on the ways city residents continue to confront and resist control over their communities through counter-narratives that challenge geographies of injustice. Recommended for scholars of communication studies, journalism, sociology, geography, and political science.
