Das Werk "Hemmung, Symptom und Angst" über die Angst wurde von Siegmund Freud im Juli 1925 verfasst, im Dezember überarbeitet und im Februar des Jahres 1926 schließlich veröffentlicht. Die Gliederung des Inhalts und des Aufbaus ist nicht ganz deutlich. Die drei zusätzlichen Nachträge fördern die Unübersichtlichkeit. Im Jahre 1926 veröffentlichte er zudem "Die Frage nach der Laienanalyse. Unterredungen mit einem Unparteiischen." mit der Intention, die Lehren der Psychoanalyse auf dogmatische Sicht darzustellen. Hingegen war die Intention seines Werkes "Hemmung, Symptom und Angst" die Darlegung einer zweiten Angsttheorie, um konkrete Veränderung an der Lehre der Psychoanalyse vorzunehmen und sich von älteren Theorieteilen zu lösen.
