Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Upper Room Meditations IN the opening verses of the Bible there is an in timation of the sublime truth that everything in the universe of God, both physical and spiritual, is under law. In the beginning God created the heaven and the earth. And the earth was without form, and void; and darkness was upon the face of the deep. And the Spirit of God moved upon the face of the waters. When the Spirit of God moved upon the face of the waters, then came life and light, order and beauty. From the revolutions of a planetary system to the fall of a sparrow there is nothing capricious or arbitrary or fortuitous in the divine administration. This truth is the key that will unlock many mysteries in our study of God's ways in his dealings with us as revealed in his Word and known by our experience. In the chapters that follow it is hoped that the kind ly reader will discern this truth as a golden thread running through the whole. And we will not forget that the Spirit of God is his own best interpreter. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: What would you give to spend an evening with Jesus, hearing Him teach and listening to Him pray? This is what we encounter in the Farewell Discourse of John 13-17. As the shadow of the cross loomed, Christ shared His final hours with the disciples to prepare them for His death, quiet their troubled hearts, and intercede on their behalf before the Father. In Lessons from the Upper Room, Dr. Sinclair Ferguson draws us into these intimate hours from the night when Jesus was betrayed. This vivid picture of Christ's ministry, from His washing the disciples' feet to His High Priestly Prayer, shows us the heart of Jesus. Discover His deepest desires for His people and take delight in the suffering Savior who has overcome the world.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In Three Simple Rules, Rueben Job offers an interpretation of John Wesley's General Rules for today's readers. For individual reading or group study, this insightful work calls us to mutual respect, unity and a deeper daily relationship with God. This simple but challenging look at three commands, "do no harm, do good, stay in love with God," calls us to mutual respect, unity, and a deeper relationship with God. “Every year I review the three general rules of the United Methodist Church with those who are being ordained. Now I have a wonderful ordination gift to give them in Bishop Job’s, Three Simple Rules, to start and deepen the conversation as they enter a new relationship with the church. Bishop Job has described “by attending upon all the ordinances of God” to be to “stay in love with God.” It’s a fresh language that speaks especially to long-time Christians and United Methodists.” Sally Dyck, Resident Bishop, Minnesota Area “Three Simple Rules is a new catechism for everyone wanting to follow Jesus Christ. These practices for holy living should replace the membership vows in every church! Don’t let the title fool you. Bishop Job writes, ‘The rules are simple, but the way is not easy. Only those with great courage will attempt it, and only those with great faith will be able to walk this exciting and demanding way.’” John Hopkins, Resident Bishop, East Ohio Area Table of Contents: Introduction The World In Which We Live First Do No Harm Do All the Good You Can Stay in Love with God A Guide for Daily Prayer

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: What Christian would not want to hear Mark's gospel as the first believers heard it? Using the tools of modern scholarship, Peter's Last Sermon takes seriously Mark's audience. The community would have heard rather than read the gospel. It would have encountered the story as a whole instead of piecemeal in short texts for sermons. Missing would have been the static of Matthew, Luke, and John. As for the speaker? While most modern scholars table the question of authorship, the post-apostolic writers of the second and third centuries claim with one voice that (though penned by Mark) the gospel actually went back to Peter. So to hear the gospel as did those early Christians was to hear it as if coming from him. Does it make a difference to our understanding of Mark's message if from Peter? Yes. And the result is surprising. Peter's Last Sermon takes us on a journey through Roman and Jewish texts to meet the Jesus not of the modern Church but of Peter's proclamation in Rome. Nero's persecution had left the community in crisis. What was Peter's message for his time? Christ was different from expected, he said, but how? James Dawsey shows that Christ broke the messianic expectations of his Galilean followers and the Jerusalem religious elite of his day. And as the reader of Peter's Last Sermon will see, he surprised Mark's hearers a generation later. The Gospel of Mark still confronts us in new ways
