These disparate malignancies have one thing in common: consistently effective treatment remains elusive. This book is a comprehensive guide to diagnosis, management, and post-treatment care. Epidemiologic factors, molecular and biologic determinants, diagnostic/staging methods and treatment modalities are described for each organ site. The text is thoroughly supported by color illustrations, a key feature of the American Cancer Society Atlas of Clinical Oncology series. The expert contributors from medical, surgical and radiation oncology examine the advances in imaging, interventional gastroenterology, surgical technique, and combined modality therapy and discuss their impact in the management of this challenging group of cancers.
Book Synopsis Multimodal Therapy of Upper Gastrointestinal Malignancies by : Ulrich Ronellenfitsch
Download or read book Multimodal Therapy of Upper Gastrointestinal Malignancies written by Ulrich Ronellenfitsch and published by MDPI. This book was released on 2021-08-30 with total page 272 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Recent decades have seen remarkable advances in the treatment of upper gastrointestinal malignancies, i.e., adenocarcinoma and squamous cell carcinoma as well as gastrointestinal stromal and other rare tumors of the esophagus and stomach. While, historically, surgical resection has been the sole treatment for these tumors, multimodal therapies have meanwhile proven their efficacy. At present, pre- and postoperative chemotherapy and radiotherapy, targeted drug therapy, and stage-specific surgical approaches are all indispensable cornerstones of an individualized treatment for upper gastrointestinal malignancies. With such multimodal treatment, better outcomes comprising improved quality of life and prolonged survival have been achieved for patients. However, for many tumor entities and stages, the ideal combination and sequence of treatments is still being evaluated in clinical trials. Moreover, the value of novel approaches such as immunotherapy or robotic surgery remains a matter of research. In this Special Issue of Cancers, up-to-date original research, short communications, and comprehensive review articles on all modalities playing a role in the treatment of upper gastrointestinal malignancies have been published.

Book Synopsis Registries for Evaluating Patient Outcomes by : Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality/AHRQ
Download or read book Registries for Evaluating Patient Outcomes written by Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality/AHRQ and published by Government Printing Office. This book was released on 2014-04-01 with total page 396 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This User’s Guide is intended to support the design, implementation, analysis, interpretation, and quality evaluation of registries created to increase understanding of patient outcomes. For the purposes of this guide, a patient registry is an organized system that uses observational study methods to collect uniform data (clinical and other) to evaluate specified outcomes for a population defined by a particular disease, condition, or exposure, and that serves one or more predetermined scientific, clinical, or policy purposes. A registry database is a file (or files) derived from the registry. Although registries can serve many purposes, this guide focuses on registries created for one or more of the following purposes: to describe the natural history of disease, to determine clinical effectiveness or cost-effectiveness of health care products and services, to measure or monitor safety and harm, and/or to measure quality of care. Registries are classified according to how their populations are defined. For example, product registries include patients who have been exposed to biopharmaceutical products or medical devices. Health services registries consist of patients who have had a common procedure, clinical encounter, or hospitalization. Disease or condition registries are defined by patients having the same diagnosis, such as cystic fibrosis or heart failure. The User’s Guide was created by researchers affiliated with AHRQ’s Effective Health Care Program, particularly those who participated in AHRQ’s DEcIDE (Developing Evidence to Inform Decisions About Effectiveness) program. Chapters were subject to multiple internal and external independent reviews.

Book Synopsis Minimally Invasive Surgery for Upper Abdominal Cancer by : Miguel A. Cuesta
Download or read book Minimally Invasive Surgery for Upper Abdominal Cancer written by Miguel A. Cuesta and published by Springer. This book was released on 2017-10-11 with total page 368 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book aims to comprehensibly describe the minimally invasive technique including robot assisted procedures of upper abdominal cancer, including aspects such as surgical anatomy, neoadjuvant therapy and minimally invasive surgical technique, and robot assisted procedures (5 alinea). Upper abdominal oncological surgery is increasingly approached by Minimally Invasive Surgery (MIS). Due to the rising experience of young surgeons with MIS, the optimal imaging obtained during the procedure and the possibility of decreasing the postoperative complications has led to an increase of quality of life without compromising the completeness of resection. The book bases its approach on the information gathered by MIS observation and the step-by-step descriptions, by using illustrations and videos of surgical procedures for oncological resections of esophageal and gastric cancer, as well as for duodenum, pancreas, spleen and liver cancers. Furthermore, this book will serve as a teaching guide, providing a present-day introduction to the increasingly sophisticated performance of surgery required by general and specialized surgical practitioners. The reader will have access to a practical book with relevant information that guides adequate treatment.

Book Synopsis Imaging in Clinical Oncology by : Athanasios D. Gouliamos
Download or read book Imaging in Clinical Oncology written by Athanasios D. Gouliamos and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2013-11-26 with total page 609 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This encompassing book is designed to contribute to a teamwork approach by promoting understanding between radiologists and clinical oncologists. All of the currently available imaging modalities of relevance in clinical oncology are covered, and the presentation of a broad spectrum of oncologic diseases (of most organ systems) on these modalities is discussed and illustrated. The role of multiparametric and multimodality imaging approaches providing both morphologic and functional information is considered in detail, and careful attention is paid to the latest developments in higher field (3T) MR imaging and advanced MR techniques such as diffusion-weighted imaging, diffusion tensor imaging, perfusion-weighted imaging and spectroscopy. The major challenge of incorporating progress in quantitative imaging technology into radiotherapy treatment planning, guidance, and monitoring is also addressed. This book will assist in refining the treatment approach in various oncologic diseases and organ systems based on specific imaging features. It will be of value to radiologists, oncologists, and other medical professionals involved in the diagnosis and treatment of oncology patients.
Book Synopsis Perioperative Chemotherapy by : U. Metzger
Download or read book Perioperative Chemotherapy written by U. Metzger and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 170 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: One reason for failure to cure solid tumors by surgery appears to be the impossibility of controlling metastases that are present but latent at the time of operation. This failure is a common clinical experience with aggressive neoplasms. but it is not always appreciated in tumors with longer survival times. e. g .• breast and colon cancer. In addition. recent evidence indicates that after resection of a primary tumor micrometas tases from it might be enhanced by suppression of immune and reticu loendothelial functions of the host. Other factors, such as increase of coagulability and stress in the perioperative period, can also promote tumor growth. The development of new metastases might be facilitated by cells forced into the circulation during operative manipulations. Such events could be important for the outcome of treatment and it is suggested that preventive measures should be directed to this systemic component of solid tumors. Radical surgery can reduce the number of tumor cells to a subclinical 3 6 stage (10 to 10 cells) in which chemotherapy might be more effective than in advanced stages. Chemotherapy, on the other hand, might aggravate the surgical morbidity by influencing the wound healing pro cess, by decreasing the immune response, and/or by toxicity to the bone marrow and to the gastrointestinal tract, for example.
