Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The second in a series of highly practical, hands-on, step-by-step photographic manuals, Upgrading Your Boat's Interior fills a gap in the market for the DIY boat builder and repairer. It is a subject covered only in piecemeal fashion by the yachting press, which, like general boat maintenance and repair manuals, can't go into the level of detail Mike Westin does. This is a visual, hand-holding guide, dwelling on the practical details of upgrading every aspect of a tired boat's interior and related systems as it explains each procedure rather than focussing on the theory (which is relegated to an appendix, for those who wish to go further). It's surprising how a few simple renovations and upgrades can transform the look and comfort of a cabin. Anyone planning to attempt these projects will find this photographic step-by-step book a hand-holding godsend.

Book excerpt: Now in its second edition, completely revised and updated, Spurr's Boatbook remains the best single source for understanding and improving your boat. You need not live with a dark or dank cabin, insufficient space for stowage or chartwork, or sheet winches, halyards, and reefing arrangements so inconvenient that you often find yourself motoring when you'd rather be sailing. Somewhere beneath your boat's crazed gelcoat, untamed rig, patchwork electrical system, and stubborn steering lies the boat of your dreams. This book will enable you to envision that boat in detail--how its deck hardware is laid out, what the rig looks like, where its hull and decks are reinforced, and how its cabin arrangements are altered to fit your needs. And the book will help you translate that vision into reality by showing you what work should be done and in what order, which projects you can do yourself and which you should probably hire out, and how much time or money might be involved. Along the way, Dan Spurr gives step-by-step instructions, supported by Bruce Bingham's beautifully clear drawings, for many useful projects any do-it-yourselfer can tackle, including autopilot installation, deck hardware modifications, and electrical system upgrades. The gear, equipment, design, and construction standards cited in this book--often in very specific detail with brand-name recommendations--are as useful for evaluating a new boat as they are for buying a used boat or improving the boat you already own.

Book excerpt: Dear Fellow Boater: I know I spent too much my first year as a boat owner. Most of it went to marine stores and boat yards. Like you, I quickly discovered how much it costs to keep a boat in good running order. And how expensive many of the upgrades and "toys" I wanted were. Staring at a stack of receipts, I decided there had to be a cheaper way to maintain and upgrade a boat, without sacrificing safety. It took four more years of boat ownership, but I gradually developed strategies to save money on almost every purchase related to the boat. Some were solutions to specific problems, like when the prop had so much growth it looked like a cauliflower. Other people in the marina were having the same problem. Most either hired a diver or had the boat hauled for a power wash both at substantial cost. It turned out a dollar's worth of steel wool lashed to the bottom of an old pair of shoes did the trick on my boat. We scrubbed the prop with our feet. Some of the best deals were at dollar stores. Most carried painting supplies for .99 cents each. At that price I could afford to throw brushes and pans away after messy bottom painting. I was learning to break problems down and look for boating supplies in unlikely places. A fellow boater suggested I start writing this stuff down. Several months later I sold the first copy of "Dollar" Store Boating. It's a collection of ideas, strategies and worksheets that can help you maintain and upgrade your boat for less money. Fair winds and following seas, Dominic Villari P.S. If this book saves you just $25, it's already paid for itself.

Book excerpt: The basic knowledge to sort yourself out when encountering problems at sea is largely forgotten. How to find your way when the GPS plotter has a blackout, how to get yourself off when grounded, how to save the life of someone in your crew when the ambulance or SAR helicopter is hours away... Too many rely on technology to navigate and run their boats, and this beautifully illustrated handbook will be a literal backup when the tech fails, as well as a bible of core knowledge – seamanship – that all skippers should know anyway, whether they're in the middle of an emergency or not. Covering all the basics, with handy fact boxes to highlight especially important information, the authors have lent a modern, real-world approach to the subject matter, and the wonderful illustrations bring it to life. Contents include: - Introduction - Navigation: chart symbols, radar fact box, using the sounder, finding your position on the chart, maintaining an estimated position, course to steer - Seamanship: your crew, passage planning, anchoring, manoeuvering, mooring, towing, catching a buoy, heaving to - Safety and emergencies: identifying likely emergencies (grounding, loss of rigging/mast, leaks, loss of steering, man overboard, sinking and taking to the liferaft) with self-help solutions, calling for help, equipment, VHF procedures, fire and gas, fixing an engine, knowing when help should be sought without delay - First aid: CPR, breathing problems, drowning, shock, trauma, treating wounds, burns, broken limbs, hypothermia, seasickness, allergies, abdominal pains/nose bleed - Weather: sea breeze, low pressure, wind, fog, squalls, forecasting - Environment: bird/seal protection areas, microplastics, holding tanks, old boats, bottom paint - Appendix: rules of road, traffic separation zones, day and night signals, light characteristics, life saving signals, flags/morse Published in Sweden by the Swedish Cruising Association, this fantastic book has sold over 30,000 copies. Read this now to give yourself the knowledge to get out of trouble and (even better) avoid getting into it in the first place.
