Book excerpt: In the autumn of 1972, Lucy Ferriss, then a college student in California, was preparing for the Veiled Prophet Ball at which she was to be presented to St. Louis society. Once the largest cotillion in the country, the invitation-only ball was unique among society events not only for the legend and mystery surrounding its namesake but also for its setting in a public, taxpayer-funded arena and for its accompanying parade. In the late sixties and early seventies, with racial tensions at a boiling point and urban renewal failing, the exclusively white male Christian membership of the Veiled Prophet Society and the Veiled Prophet's costume--eerily reminiscent of a Klansman's--attracted the ire of ACTION, a militant civil rights group. Before the 1972 ball, ACTION founder Percy Green, himself a native St. Louisan, sent letters inviting all of the debutantes to join in the protest: "ACTION understands that you hate being part of this upcoming white racist Veiled Prophet Ball as we hate you being forced to participate by your parents." The letter didn't persuade Ferriss, who felt she owed it to her father to participate. She wrote back: "Don't you have bigger fish to fry? This is just a stupid party. We are slaughtering people in Southeast Asia. Let this one go. It will fall of its own weight." But ACTION did not let this one go. On the night of the ball, as Ferriss bowed in obeisance to the crowd and took her place on the stage, a woman swooped down onto the stage and knocked off the Veiled Prophet's hat and veil, revealing his identity. In the era of monumental Vietnam War protests, unmasking a wealthy and powerful old man might have seemed a feeble act of revolution, but this act forever changed the Veiled Prophet Ball in St. Louis. Ferriss's memoir blends regional history, national history, and her own personal history to create a fast-paced narrative that follows two time lines. One is the dramatic and often funny story of her attending the exclusive ball, having eaten half a pan of marijuana brownies beforehand, with a Jewish hippie who smelled of "unwashed beard." The other story takes place thirty years later as Ferriss returns to St. Louis from her home on the East Coast to track down some of ACTION's principal activists as well as key figures in the Veiled Prophet Society. Over the course of this engaging story, Ferriss undergoes her own unveiling, as she discusses and comes to terms with her family; the past, present, and future of St. Louis; and the cultural politics that frame young women's entrance into society.

Book excerpt: The Veiled Prophet organization has been a vital institution in St. Louis for more than a century. Founded in March 1878 by a group of prominent St. Louis businessmen, the organization was fashioned after the New Orleans Carnival society the Mystick Krewe of Comus. In The St. Louis Veiled Prophet Celebration, Thomas Spencer explores the social and cultural functions of the organization's annual celebration—the Veiled Prophet parade and ball—and traces the shifts that occurred over the years in its cultural meaning and importance. Although scholars have researched the more pluralistic parades of the eighteenth and early nineteenth centuries, very little has been done to examine the elite-dominated parades of the late nineteenth and twentieth centuries. This study shows how pluralistic parades ceased to exist in St. Louis and why the upper echelon felt it was so important to end them. Spencer shows that the celebration originated as the business elite's response to the St. Louis general strike of 1877. Symbolically gaining control of the streets, the elites presented St. Louis history and American history by tracing the triumphs of great men—men who happened to be the Veiled Prophet members' ancestors. The parade, therefore, was intended to awe the masses toward passivity with its symbolic show of power. The members believed that they were helping to boost St. Louis economically and culturally by enticing visitors from the surrounding communities. They also felt that the parades provided the spectators with advice on morals and social issues and distracted them from less desirable behavior like drinking and carousing. From 1900 to 1965 the celebration continued to include educational and historical elements; thereafter, it began to resemble the commercialized leisure that was increasingly becoming a part of everyday life. The biggest change occurred in the period from 1965 to 1980, when the protests of civil rights groups led many St. Louisans to view the parade and ball as wasteful conspicuous consumption that was often subsidized with taxpayers' money. With membership dropping and the news media giving the organization little notice, it soon began to wither. In response, the leaders of the Veiled Prophet organization decided to have a "VP Fair" over the Fourth of July weekend. The 1990s brought even more changes, and the members began to view the celebration as a way to unite the St. Louis community, with all of its diversity, rather than as a chance to boost the city or teach cultural values. The St. Louis Veiled Prophet Celebration is a valuable addition not only to the cultural history of Missouri and St. Louis but also to recent scholarship on urban culture, city politics, and the history of public celebrations in America.

Book excerpt: Alone among the world's religions, Islam is not just surviving but flourishing. Yet many people know little about Islam and regard its continuing attraction as something of a mystery. In this book, Du Pasquier, an award-winning Swiss journalist, provides a thorough introduction to Muslim belief, history and culture. He deals not only with topical issues, such as 'fundamentalism' and the status of Muslim women, but provides an overview of the Qur'an, the Prophet, Islamic history, and the nature of Muslim art and literature. Unbiased yet passionate, the book offers an 'unveiling' which must be heeded if the present mutual incomprehension between East and West is to be overcome.

Book excerpt: While Islamic theology differs from Christianity's, Muslims and Christians hold Jesus Christ in high esteem. He is a central figure in both religions, loved, admired, respected, and revered. Both Muslims and Christians believe in Jesus' virgin birth, ability to perform miracles and return at the end of time. However, both religions differ in Christ's nature and life occurrences. While Christians accept Jesus Christ as the divine Son of God, Muslims take him as a human and one of God's mighty noble Messengers sent to relay God's Message to his people, just as many past Prophets did. This book encourages Christians and non-Muslims alike to cross-examine what the Bible and Jesus Christ state about God, His message to humanity, the nature of Jesus Christ, and related concepts. If done sincerely, one should conclude that neither Jesus Christ nor the Bible teaches what the Church teaches today. One concludes that Jesus Christ and the Bible never mention Jesus Christ as the Son of God, part of the Trinity, nor did they teach the concepts of crucifixion, redemption, or permission to abandon the law of the Prophet Moses PBUH. Many well-intentioned Christians follow modern Christianity, a corrupted version of the teachings of Jesus Christ - those he never preached nor taught. This book provides irrefutable proof from the Bible and common logic that Allah is our Creator, and Jesus Christ was a Muslim and human Prophet sent to the nation before us, the Children of Israel. It provides irrefutable evidence from the Bible that the Revelation of Jesus Christ was tampered with by humans after his departure and that the Bible we read today is not the inspired Word of God. One must use their God-given gift of intellect and logic to investigate, ponder, and reflect without allowing their emotions and cultural biases to cloud their judgment, blindly following their Church. To my dear Christian, you must research and know the reality of Jesus Christ and his message so you may be guided to God, enter Paradise eternally, and avoid the ultimate punishment. Topics in the book include: Understanding the Concept of God Sending Messengers to Relay His Message Basic Understanding of the Similarities and Differences Between Islam, Christianity, & Judaism Who is Allah? Whom Are Jesus Christ and Mary PBUT? Whom Was Jesus Christ Sent to Address? What Was His Mission? Did He Come with a New Law as Christians Claim? Is Jesus God, Son of God, or Prophet of God? What does the Bible Say? Trinity Crucial Differences Between God & Jesus Christ Who is the Author of the Bible? Does the Bible Contain Errors & Contradictions? Pornography, Incest, & Immorality in the Bible Is Jesus Christ God Because He was Born With no Father? Christians Claim Jesus Christ is Divine, and his Ability to Perform Miracles is Proof The Bible Labels Jesus Christ as 'The Son of God' Son of Man' 'Lord' 'His Servant' 'The Father and I are one' 'For There are Three That Bear Record in Heaven' The Word 'Begotten' in the Bible 'I am the way and the truth and the life' The Role of Paul in Christianity and How He Destroyed the Teachings of Jesus Christ Paganism on Christianity Atonement Was Jesus Christ Crucified? Proofs that Islam is the Only True Religion of God Scientific & Mathematical Miracles, Quality & Eloquence, Prophecies, Predictions, Knowledge of Past Events of the Holy Quran The Prophet Muhammad PBUH in a Nutshell & Prophesied in The Bible & Other Scriptures Muslims are the True Followers of Jesus Christ Tawheed Was Our Father Prophet Abraham PBUH a Jew, Christian, or Muslim? Book excerpt: In "Islam Unveiled," Robert Spencer dares to face the hard questions about what the Islamic religion actually teaches--and the potentially ominous implications of those teachings for the future of both the Muslim world and the West. Going beyond the shallow distinction between a "true" peaceful Islam and the "hijacked" Islam of terrorist groups, Spencer probes the Koran and Islamic traditions (as well as the history and present-day situation of the Muslim world) as part of his inquiry into why the world's fastest growing faith tends to arouse fanaticism. "Islam Unveiled" evaluates the relationship between Islamic fundamentalism and "mainstream" Islam; the fixation with violence and jihad; the reasons for Muslims' disturbing treatment of women; and devastating effects of Muslim polygamy and Islamic divorce laws. Spencer explores other daunting questions--why the human rights record of Islamic countries is so unrelievedly grim and how the root causes of this record exist in basic Muslim beliefs; why science and high culture died out in the Muslim world--and why this is a root cause of modern Muslim resentment. He evaluates what Muslims learn from the life of Muhammad, the man that Islam hails as the supreme model of human behavior. Above all, this provocative work grapples with the question that most preoccupies us today: can Islam create successful secularized societies that will coexist peacefully with the West's multicultural mosaic?

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Islam is a religion that inculcates the importance of being loyal to the country in which one lives. Hazrat Mirza Ghulam Ahmad, peace be upon him, the Promised Messiah and Mahdi, and Founder of the Ahmadiyya Muslim Community, always taught the same to his followers. However, Maulvi Muhammad Husain of Batala, a staunch opponent, sought to defame the author by sending false reports to the government alleging that the Promised Messiah, peace be upon him, was a man who secretly conspired against the state. Against this backdrop, the author was moved to pen this treatise, in which he outlines his own family background and the long-standing services of his family in support of the British government. He also presents a succinct summary of the teachings of his community. Moreover, the author explains that Muslims who believe in the return of a violent Mahdi who would forcibly convert the world to Islam could not be further from the truth.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Since his arrival in Detroit on July 4, 1930, W.D. Fard, known also as Wallace Fard Muhammad and over fifty other aliases, has elicited an enormous amount of curiosity. Who was this man who claimed that he was both the Messiah and the Mahdi, and who was identified as God in Person by his disciple, Elijah Muhammad, whom he reportedly appointed as his Final Messenger? The people who actually met him, and the scholars who have studied him, have suggested that he was variously an African American, an Arab from Syria, Lebanon, Algeria, Morocco or Saudi Arabia, a Jamaican, a Turk, an Afghan, an Indo-Pakistani, an Iranian, an Azeri, a white American, a Bosnian, a Mexican, a Greek or even a Jew. In an attempt to determine the origins of W.D. Fard, most scholars have relied on his teachings as passed down, and perhaps modified, by Elijah Muhammad. Some have suggested that he was a member of the Moorish Science Temple of America or the Ahmadiyyah Movement. Others have suggested that he was a Druze or a Shiite. Finding W.D. Fard: Unveiling the Identity of the Founder of the Nation of Islam provides an overview of the scholarly literature related to this mysterious subject and the theories concerning his ethnic and racial origins. It provides the most detailed analysis of his teachings to date in order to identify their original and multifarious sources. Finding W.D. Fard considers the conflicting views shared by his early followers to decipher the doctrine he actually taught. Did W.D. Fard really profess to be Allah, or was he deified after his death by Elijah Muhammad? The book features a meticulous study of any and all subjects who fit the profile of W.D. Fard, and provides the most detailed information regarding his life to date. It also offers an overview of turn-of-the-20th-century Islam in the state of Oregon, demonstrating how much W.D. Fard learned about the Muslim faith while residing in the Pacific Northwest. The work finishes with a series of conclusions and suggestions for further scholarship.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Unveiling Origin of Mecca provides insights into the history of Kaaba (Ka’ba) in Mecca. The Ka’ba is the first house built on earth. It is one of the few and perhaps the only Islamic History books that looks at modern archaeological evidence and the Holy Quran and the history of the Quran to explore the proper location of the Ka’ba. The author notes that in the Holy Quran, Mecca, sometimes also called Becca, which words are synonymous, and signify “a place of great intercourse,” is undoubtedly one of the most ancient cities in the world. Some authors imagine it to be the Mesa, or Mesha, of the Scripture and that it deduced its name from one of Ishmael’s sons. It stands in a stony and barren valley, surrounded by mountains under the exact parallel with the Macoraba of Ptolemy, and about 40 Arabian miles from the sea 'Al Kolzom. There is a magnificent temple in the city, like the Colosseum at Rome. However, it is not made of such large stones but burnt bricks and round in the same manner. It has ninety or one hundred doors around it and is arched...upon entering the temple you descend ten or twelve steps of marble, and here and there about the said entrance there stand men who sell jewels and nothing else. Researching ancient Islam and the origin of Mecca, the author asserts that the Ka’ba is currently misplaced, contradicting the Holy Quran and Arabian geography. Although there are many Islamic scholars and Quran research Institutes throughout the world, sadly, none of them have yet verified the exact places, mountains surrounding Ka’ba, and its sacred area according to the Holy Quran.

Book excerpt: Who is the 'TRUE' false prophet of Revelation? For more than 170 years, Adventists have asserted that the two-horned beast from the earth in Revelation 13, also known as the false prophet, points to the United States of America. DOES HISTORY STILL SUPPORT THIS CONCLUSION? Under the lens of history, this book will look at J.N. Andrews' interpretation of the beast from the earth, and compare it with another candidate that is well poised to fill the role of Revelation's false prophet. Using the historicist approach along with the sound principle of allowing Scripture to interpret Scripture, this book will seek to identify this key player in Satan's end-time deceptions.
