It was intended that about 80 scientists would participate in the Symposium, with about 25 talks being delivered, to which poster sessions with 8 contributions were added subsequently. All the speakers and poster presenters were selected by the scientific committee, although two late replacements of speakers were required. Fruitful discussions, well led by the session chairmen, took place formally after each talk and after the poster sessions and informally on other occasions including the social events. The present proceedings of the Symposium appear to reflect much of the current state of experimental, computational and theoretical work and progress in boundary-layer separation. We hope that they provide also ideas, questions and stimulation, in addition to major recent developments.

Book excerpt: The phenomenon of separation is one of the most critical features of the flow of viscous fluids about rigid bodies. In the two-dimensional steady-state case, Prandtl's criterion (vanishing of skin friction) appears to be successful in predicting separation. Numerical integrations have indicated that the boundary-layer equations behave singularly at separation, and Goldstein has suggested analytical formulas describing this situation. Prandtl's criterion fails to predict meaningful separation for unsteady problems and this seems to have been mostly unnoticed. A general and formal definition of 'boundary-layer separation' is given, based on the concept of Goldstein's singularity. It is demonstrated how from this definition one can deduce meaningful criteria for the unsteady problem as well as other complicated cases, such as three-dimensional or compressible separation flow. A simple formula is suggested for the component of the velocity in the direction parallel to the wall; and it is demonstrated that this is in agreement with Goldstein's results for small distance from separation along the wall. A differential equation is derived from the momentum equation which contains the velocity profile at separation. A few applications are included, demonstrating solutions of this equation, which, in the unsteady case, contains the velocity of the phenomenon of separation too.

Book excerpt: The symmetry-plane laminar boundary layer of an impulsively-started ellipsoid of revolution at high incidence is solved to shed light on some basic characteristics of three dimensional, unsteady flows. The governing equations are formally similar to those for the 3-dimensional, steady case, so the same method of solution and computer programs previously developed were employed in the present work. The most important result obtained is concerned with the meridional skin friction c(fu). The zero-c(fu) point (at which c(fu) vanishes) does not, as expected, move forward as time increases, instead it remains over the rear body. As t approaches infinity, it jumps to the front nose. This implies that there is no flow separation over the symmetry-plane at finite times. In the meanwhile, it is argued that separation must occur on two sides of the body. This situation leads us to propose a new unsteady separation sequence, i.e. an open type separation prevails at earlier times, while a closed type of separation occurs only at the steady-state condition. This sequence presents a sharp contrast to the conventional notion of unsteady separation which consists of a series of closed separations only. Furthermore, this sequence with the time as the parameter is found to be similar to that for previously-studied steady flows with varying incidences. (Author).

During this reporting period, an analytical model of the laminar separation region in supersonic flow at high Reynolds number was formulated and shown to be in reasonable agreement with experimental results. The model gives scaling laws for the flow properties and length scales for the separation region. It was also shown that triple-deck theory is the valid limit for high Reynolds-number flows involving laminar separation and reattachment, on the basis of interacting boundary-layer theory. Another analysis demonstrated the nature of the flow near an abrupt change of surface height, such as steps and bases. Unsteady effects on three-dimensional boundary layers at large Reynolds number were analyzed and were found to fall into three distinct regimes of frequency parameter, based on triple-deck arguments. Algorithms were developed to treat separated flow problems, avoiding the difficulty of the separation singularity by use of time-marching in one case, and using a spectral method in the other case. Results have been obtained for both two and three-dimensional flows involving relatively large regions of separation.
