Download or read book Sums of Independent Random Variables written by V.V. Petrov and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 360 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The classic "Limit Dislribntions fOT slt1ns of Independent Ramdorn Vari ables" by B.V. Gnedenko and A.N. Kolmogorov was published in 1949. Since then the theory of summation of independent variables has devel oped rapidly. Today a summing-up of the studies in this area, and their results, would require many volumes. The monograph by I.A. Ibragi mov and Yu. V. I~innik, "Independent and Stationarily Connected VaTiables", which appeared in 1965, contains an exposition of the contem porary state of the theory of the summation of independent identically distributed random variables. The present book borders on that of Ibragimov and Linnik, sharing only a few common areas. Its main focus is on sums of independent but not necessarily identically distri buted random variables. It nevertheless includes a number of the most recent results relating to sums of independent and identically distributed variables. Together with limit theorems, it presents many probahilistic inequalities for sums of an arbitrary number of independent variables. The last two chapters deal with the laws of large numbers and the law of the iterated logarithm. These questions were not treated in Ibragimov and Linnik; Gnedenko and KolmogoTOv deals only with theorems on the weak law of large numbers. Thus this book may be taken as complementary to the book by Ibragimov and Linnik. I do not, however, assume that the reader is familiar with the latter, nor with the monograph by Gnedenko and Kolmogorov, which has long since become a bibliographical rarity

Book Synopsis Contributions to Statistics by : P. C. Mahalanobis
Download or read book Contributions to Statistics written by P. C. Mahalanobis and published by Elsevier. This book was released on 2014-05-12 with total page 533 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Contributions to Statistics focuses on the processes, methodologies, and approaches involved in statistics. The book is presented to Professor P. C. Mahalanobis on the occasion of his 70th birthday. The selection first offers information on the recovery of ancillary information and combinatorial properties of partially balanced designs and association schemes. Discussions focus on combinatorial applications of the algebra of association matrices, sample size analogy, association matrices and the algebra of association schemes, and conceptual statistical experiments. The book then examines lattice sampling by means of Lahiri's sampling scheme; contributions of interpenetrating networks of samples; and apparently unconnected problems encountered in sampling work. The publication takes a look at screening processes, place of the design of experiments in the logic of scientific inference, and rarefaction. Topics include mathematical probability, scientific experience, combinatorial progress, gains and losses, criterion and scores, simple drug screening process, and screening of crop varieties. The manuscript then reviews the estimation and interpretation of gross differences and the simple response variance; partially balanced asymmetrical factorial designs; and approximation of distributions of sums of independent summands by infinitely divisible distributions. The selection is a dependable reference for statisticians and researchers interested in the processes, methodologies, and approaches employed in statistics.

Book Synopsis Introduction to Analytic and Probabilistic Number Theory by : Gérald Tenenbaum
Download or read book Introduction to Analytic and Probabilistic Number Theory written by Gérald Tenenbaum and published by American Mathematical Society. This book was released on 2024-06-26 with total page 656 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book provides a self contained, thorough introduction to the analytic and probabilistic methods of number theory. The prerequisites being reduced to classical contents of undergraduate courses, it offers to students and young researchers a systematic and consistent account on the subject. It is also a convenient tool for professional mathematicians, who may use it for basic references concerning many fundamental topics. Deliberately placing the methods before the results, the book will be of use beyond the particular material addressed directly. Each chapter is complemented with bibliographic notes, useful for descriptions of alternative viewpoints, and detailed exercises, often leading to research problems. This third edition of a text that has become classical offers a renewed and considerably enhanced content, being expanded by more than 50 percent. Important new developments are included, along with original points of view on many essential branches of arithmetic and an accurate perspective on up-to-date bibliography. The author has made important contributions to number theory and his mastery of the material is reflected in the exposition, which is lucid, elegant, and accurate. —Mathematical Reviews
Download or read book Erdös Centennial written by László Lovász and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2014-01-24 with total page 714 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Paul Erdös was one of the most influential mathematicians of the twentieth century, whose work in number theory, combinatorics, set theory, analysis, and other branches of mathematics has determined the development of large areas of these fields. In 1999, a conference was organized to survey his work, his contributions to mathematics, and the far-reaching impact of his work on many branches of mathematics. On the 100th anniversary of his birth, this volume undertakes the almost impossible task to describe the ways in which problems raised by him and topics initiated by him (indeed, whole branches of mathematics) continue to flourish. Written by outstanding researchers in these areas, these papers include extensive surveys of classical results as well as of new developments.
