Book Synopsis Uneven Moments by : Harry Harootunian
Download or read book Uneven Moments written by Harry Harootunian and published by Columbia University Press. This book was released on 2019-02-05 with total page 439 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Few scholars have done more than Harry Harootunian to shape the study of modern Japan. Incorporating Marxist critical perspectives on history and theoretically informed insights, his scholarship has been vitally important for the world of Asian studies. Uneven Moments presents a selection of Harootunian’s essays on Japan’s intellectual and cultural history from the late Tokugawa period to the present that span the many phases of his distinguished career and point to new directions for Japanese studies. Uneven Moments begins with reflections on area studies as an academic field and how we go about studying a region. It then moves into discussions of key topics in modern Japanese history. Harootunian considers Japan’s fateful encounter with capitalist modernity and the implications of uneven development, examining the combinations of older practices with new demands that characterized the twentieth century. The book examines the making of modern Japan, the transformations of everyday life, and the collision between the production of forms of cultural expression and new political possibilities. Finally, Harootunian analyzes Japanese political identity and its forms of reckoning with the past. Exploring the shifting relationship among culture, the making of meaning, and politics in rich reflections on Marxism and critical theory, Uneven Moments presents Harootunian’s intellectual trajectory and in so doing offers a unique assessment of Japanese history.

Book Synopsis A Systems Perspective on Financial Systems by : Jeffrey Yi-Lin Forrest
Download or read book A Systems Perspective on Financial Systems written by Jeffrey Yi-Lin Forrest and published by CRC Press. This book was released on 2014-03-03 with total page 572 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is devoted to a systems-theoretical presentation of the main results of applying the systemic yoyo model and relevant analytical tools to the topics of money and financial institutions. The author presents the main concepts and results of the subject matter in the language of systems science, which has in the past century prompted revolutionary applicati ons of systems research in various subfields of traditional disciplines. This volume applies a brand new logic of reasoning to some of the unsett led problems in the area of money and banking. Due to the particular systemic approach employed, the reader will be able to see how different economic activities are implicitly related to each other and how financial decisions are holistically made in reference to seemingly unrelated events. That is, the learning of this particular subject matter takes place at a different, more elevated level, from which, among others, economies are respectively seen as both closed and open systems; their interactions emulate those of rotational pools of fluids. This book can be used as a textbook for researchers and graduate students in economics, finance, systems science, and mathematical / systems modeling. It will also be useful as a reference book for applied economists and various policy makers.

Book Synopsis Preserving Dance Across Time and Space by : Lynn Matluck Brooks
Download or read book Preserving Dance Across Time and Space written by Lynn Matluck Brooks and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2016-05-06 with total page 313 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Dance is the art least susceptible to preservation since its embodied, kinaesthetic nature has proven difficult to capture in notation and even in still or moving images. However, frameworks have been established and guidance made available for keeping dances, performances, and choreographers’ legacies alive so that the dancers of today and tomorrow can experience and learn from the dances and dancers of the past. In this volume, a range of voices address the issue of dance preservation through memory, artistic choice, interpretation, imagery and notation, as well as looking at relevant archives, legal structures, documentation and artefacts. The intertwining of dance preservation and creativity is a core theme discussed throughout this text, pointing to the essential continuity of dance history and dance innovation. The demands of preservation stretch across time, geographies, institutions and interpersonal connections, and this book focuses on the fascinating web that supports the fragile yet urgent effort to sustain our dancing heritage. The articles in this book were originally published in the journal Dance Chronicle: Studies in Dance and the Related Arts.

Book Synopsis The Rhetoric of Romantic Prophecy by : Ian Balfour
Download or read book The Rhetoric of Romantic Prophecy written by Ian Balfour and published by Stanford University Press. This book was released on 2002 with total page 372 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Romantic era in England and Germany saw a sudden renewal of prophetic modes of writing. Biblical prophecy and, to a lesser extent, classical oracle again became viable models for poetry and even for journalistic prose. Notably, this development arose out of the new-found freedom of biblical interpretation that began in the mid-eighteenth century, as the Bible was increasingly seen to be a literary and mythical text. Taking Walter Benjamin’s thinking about history as a point of departure, the author shows how the model for Romantic prophecy emerges less as a prediction of the future than as a call to change in the present, even as it quotes, at key turns, texts from the past. After surveying developments in eighteenth-century biblical hermeneutics, as well as the numerous instances of prophetic eruption in Romantic poetry, the book culminates in close readings of works by Blake, Hölderlin, and Coleridge. Each of these writers interpreted the Bible in strong, variously radical and conservative ways, and each reworked prophetic texts in often startling fashion. The author’s reading of Blake focuses on the complex temporal and rhetorical dynamics at work in a prophetic tradition, with attention paid to the key mediating figure of Milton. The chapter on Hölderlin investigates the truth-claim of poetry and the consequences of Hölderlin’s insight into the necessarily figural character of poetry. The analysis of Coleridge correlates his theory of allegory and symbol with his theory and practice of political writing, which often relies on mobilizing prophetic authority. Together, the readings force us to reexamine the claims and practices of Romantic poets and thinkers and their ideas and ideologies, not without engendering some allegorical resonance with issues in our own time.

Book Synopsis Being Dead Otherwise by : Anne Allison
Download or read book Being Dead Otherwise written by Anne Allison and published by Duke University Press. This book was released on 2023-02-13 with total page 149 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: With an aging population, declining marriage and childbirth rates, and a rise in single households, more Japanese are living and dying alone. Many dead are no longer buried in traditional ancestral graves where descendants would tend their spirits, and individuals are increasingly taking on mortuary preparation for themselves. In Being Dead Otherwise Anne Allison examines the emergence of new death practices in Japan as the old customs of mortuary care are coming undone. She outlines the proliferation of new industries, services, initiatives, and businesses that offer alternative means---ranging from automated graves, collective grave sites, and crematoria to one-stop mortuary complexes and robotic priests---for tending to the dead. These new burial and ritual practices provide alternatives to long-standing traditions of burial and commemoration of the dead. In charting this shifting ecology of death, Allison outlines the potential of these solutions to radically reorient sociality in Japan in ways that will impact how we think about the end of life, identity, tradition, and culture in Japan and beyond.

Book Synopsis Pentecostal Modernism: Lovecraft, Los Angeles, and World-Systems Culture by : Stephen Shapiro
Download or read book Pentecostal Modernism: Lovecraft, Los Angeles, and World-Systems Culture written by Stephen Shapiro and published by Bloomsbury Publishing. This book was released on 2017-02-09 with total page 192 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Bringing together new accounts of the pulp horror writings of H.P. Lovecraft and the rise of the popular early 20th-century religious movements of American Pentecostalism and Social Gospel, Pentecostal Modernism challenges traditional histories of modernism as a secular avant-garde movement based in capital cities such as London or Paris. Disrupting accounts that separate religion from progressive social movements and mass culture, Stephen Shapiro and Philip Barnard construct a new Modernism belonging to a history of regional cities, new urban areas powered by the hopes and frustrations of recently urbanized populations seeking a better life. In this way, Pentecostal Modernism shows how this process of urbanization generates new cultural practices including the invention of religious traditions and mass-cultural forms.
Book Synopsis Cross-Disciplinary Approaches to Characterize Gait and Posture Disturbances in Aging and Related Diseases, volume II by : Simone Tassani
Download or read book Cross-Disciplinary Approaches to Characterize Gait and Posture Disturbances in Aging and Related Diseases, volume II written by Simone Tassani and published by Frontiers Media SA. This book was released on 2024-06-06 with total page 120 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Aging introduces disturbances to the gait and posture of individuals. Such alterations can originate or result from a wide range of causes making it challenging to understand when modifications are related to pathological or physiological causes. Many disciplines come together to perform this kind of analysis (e.g. computational and experimental mechanics, image processing, medicine, biology, physiology, machine learning, and data science). Gait analysis is particularly sensitive to the interactions of different disciplines. This technique allows the study of human movements, but only through a multidisciplinary approach, it is possible to infer relations of causation. Narrow studies focusing on specific techniques are important to develop the fundamental tools required to study movement. In recent years, significant methodological advancements have been independently made in these fields. However, to cross the borders of current science and develop consistent results any new study needs to set interdisciplinary goals. An inclusive approach merging multiple aspects would be key in targeting pharmacological or rehabilitation interventions and improving patient care as a whole.
