Book excerpt: Be sure to check out IRON AMBITION: My Life with Cus D’Amato by Mike Tyson “Raw, powerful and disturbing—a head-spinning take on Mr. Tyson's life.”—Wall Street Journal Philosopher, Broadway headliner, fighter, felon—Mike Tyson has defied stereotypes, expectations, and a lot of conventional wisdom during his three decades in the public eye. Bullied as a boy in the toughest, poorest neighborhood in Brooklyn, Tyson grew up to become one of the most ferocious boxers of all time—and the youngest heavyweight champion ever. But his brilliance in the ring was often compromised by reckless behavior. Yet—even after hitting rock bottom—the man who once admitted being addicted “to everything” fought his way back, achieving triumphant success as an actor and newfound happiness and stability as a father and husband. Brutal, honest, raw, and often hilarious, Undisputed Truth is the singular journey of an inspiring American original.

One of them was to buy a large sailboat to make a solo trip from Long Beach (California) to the city of Santos in Brazil. I gave up that idea because I was not sufficiently healthy for that long trip. My next idea was to make the trip in a small aircraft 108 that I owned. It was an aircraft easy to fly and economical. Piper Colt 108 is a first tricycle aircraft built by Piper, two passages, side by side seat. This was my plan for the adventure, flying from Las Vegas in Nevada through the Americas, Mexico, Guatemala, El Salvador, Honduras, Nicaragua, Costa Rica, and Panama.

Book excerpt: Give God a Chance is an effort to present the information in the Edgar Cayce readings in ways that are meaningful and useful to Christians of all persuasions, and even to those of other faiths. Give God a Chance consists of the following five sections: PART I: The Edgar Cayce Readings This part focuses on Edgar Cayce and the ways in which Cayce presented health and spiritual advice in what has been called readings. It also deals with the authors personal experiences with the readings. Various questions are asked in an attempt to compare the purposes of the readings with those of traditional Bible based, Christ-centered, faith in God. PART II: God, Mankind, and Spiritual Laws The readings begin with the assumption that all souls were created for the purpose of becoming companions with God. A creation cosmology is explored, which includes the possibility of the continuity of life extending into other times and places. Gods justice and mercy are understood in terms of the law of cause and effect, the law of grace, and the law of love. PART III: Christianity and the Cayce Readings The Cayce information sheds new light on our ancient Scriptures. It gives us a unique perspective of Jesus the Christ and His mission. The history of the Church is explored from the early church onward to the vision of a more democratic, inspired, and unified Body of Christ in the future. PART IV: Christian Spirituality Applied The Cayce readings are a treasure of information about prayer, meditation, healing, spiritual psychology, and applied spirituality in all phases of our lives. PART V: World Transformation A Christian worldview is developed that emphasizes personal spiritual growth (a new heaven) through having in us the mind that was in Christ Jesus, and global transformation (a new earth) through the application of Christian spirituality in the world.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: How do religious emotions and national sentiment become entangled across the world? In exploring this theme, The Secular Sacred focuses on diverse topics such as the dynamic roles of Carnival in Brazil, the public contestation of ritual in Northern Nigeria, and the culturalization of secular tolerance in the Netherlands. The contributions focus on the ways in which sacrality and secularity mutually inform, enforce, and spill over into each other. The case studies offer a bottom-up, practice-oriented approach in which the authors are wary to use categories of religion and secular as neutral descriptive terms. The Secular Sacred will be of interest to sociologists, anthropologists, ethnographers, political scientists, and social psychologists, as well as students and scholars of cultural studies and semiotics. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Wharton, Hemingway, and the Advent of Modernism is the first book to examine the connections linking two major American writers of the twentieth century, Edith Wharton and Ernest Hemingway. In twelve critical essays, accompanied by a foreword from Wharton scholar Laura Rattray and a critical introduction by volume editor Lisa Tyler, contributors reveal the writers’ overlapping contexts, interests, and aesthetic techniques. Thematic sections highlight modernist trends found in each author’s works. To begin, Peter Hays and Ellen Andrews Knodt argue for reading Wharton as a modernist writer, noting how her works feature characteristics that critics customarily credit to a younger generation of writers, including Hemingway. Since Wharton and Hemingway each volunteered for humanitarian medical service in World War I, then drew upon their experiences in subsequent literary works, Jennifer Haytock and Milena Radeva-Costello analyze their powerful perspectives on the cataclysmic conflict traditionally viewed as marking the advent of modernism in literature. In turn, Cecilia Macheski and Sirpa Salenius consider the authors’ passionate representations of Italy, informed by personal sojourns there, in which they observed its beautiful landscapes and culture, its liberating contrast with the United States, and its period of fascist politics. Linda Wagner-Martin, Lisa Tyler, and Anna Green focus on the complicated gender politics embedded in the works of Wharton and Hemingway, as evidenced in their ideas about female agency, sexual liberation, architecture, and modes of transportation. In the collection’s final section, Dustin Faulstick, Caroline Chamberlin Hellman, and Parley Ann Boswell address suggestive intertextualities between the two authors with respect to the biblical book of Ecclesiastes, their serialized publications in Scribner’s Magazine, and their affinities with the literary and cinematic tradition of noir. Together, the essays in this engaging collection prove that comparative studies of Wharton and Hemingway open new avenues for understanding the pivotal aesthetic and cultural movements central to the development of American literary modernism.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Puzzled and disturbed by the religious discord exhibited among disparate yet deeply devoted believers—the unfading urge of many to find guilt concerning the Jews; the lack of desire to understand the yearning of blacks; the ability and the need of most men to hate, to rebuke, and to discard, if not enjoy the sufferings of, a stranger—all these imperfections of humankind led M. Kleenoff to write this book. Question after question began to accumulate, forcing the author to relentlessly seek answers. Not satisfied with half-truths and encountering many dismissals in a game of zeitgeist interlaced with politically correct answers, M. Kleenoff confronts these questions with his eyes and heart wide open in the pursuit of the main task—to finally get to the bottom of human misdeeds. The author does not blame anyone; he simply attempts, through a thorough analysis, to understand why such behavior happens. He then shows the reader how to be more tolerant, understanding, and humane. Whether it comes through education, high standards of morality, or simply through relying on a higher power, the author demonstrates the way to use any of these roads, if not all, to achieve unity and happiness for all, regardless of societal dissimilarities.

Book excerpt: Here we are again I couldnt stop with just Dialogue. Gods not finished. As I told you before, Tte--Tte, was only a subtle boom. God is opening up my heart to spill more. Theres a bit of a difference to this book/journal. It explores the imagination of Art, the expression of pure emotions. So, I use to curse really, really, REALLY bad and although I have an extended vocabulary, I felt that the curse words brought it home for ME. Its not to say, it could have been omitted but I know that God will not send me to damnation over a few curse words and if you have an opinion on it, I respect it and at the same time will happily tell you we all fall short. For no one sin is greater than another. Religion will never have me bound and I understand, love and appreciate the God I serve. He made all of me even the side that cursesthis is another side of my truth but its a tougher side of me that kept me from giving upthe side of me that in the midst of my struggle God let me know He still had it all. It was by sheer stubbornness, will and determination that wouldnt let me quit. I had to continue toward His vision, no matter what came my way. The Bible is our guide but before the guide was written the work had to be put in.
