Book excerpt: An Emotional Journey Humor and Hope Through Breast Cancer is a cartoon book drawn with a unique humorous twist on an emotional journey of breast cancer patients. The chapters are broken into the stages a person undergoes: discovery of the cancer, surgery, radiation, chemo, and finally, the happier days after all treatments. Heather did not back away from the silent emotions one goes through; it truly touches on many of the emotions of this journey in a distinctive way to assist that others will know they are not alone and understand there is hope. This book has been reviewed by cancer survivors, mental health professionals, and clergy, and has been found to be supportive for those fighting for their lives. Regardless of where you or a loved one is along this individual journey; these cartoons will be inspiring and humorous. Reading this gem of a book will make you laugh and sometimes cry-it's a cathartic experience for all. -Irene K. Rickus, MS, LMHC Hess leads us through Humor and Hope to the other banks of the ocean of pain and anxiety where one can sprout again with hope and peace from the rubbles of cancer. -Father Sebastian Earthedath, MST, Pastor, Our Lady Queen of Peace. When Heather called me after her breast cancer diagnosis, I was heartbroken. Our sorority of breast cancer fighters and survivors is exclusive, but not coveted. The attitude Heather had was positive, just like her attitude toward life. Her unique insight into life situations has been well-illustrated within her artwork for many years. I know her collection of comical viewpoints of the uncomfortable, quirky positions that cancer fighters and their caregivers face will bring many laughs, lighten the uneasiness of sensitive topics, and encourage hope for the future. -Paula S. O'Neil, PhD, Author of Fighting Cancer like a Girl, Pasco County Clerk & Comptroller

Book excerpt: Sometimes we need to see other people do something that's scary first, and then we can take that first step into the unknown ourselves. Conventional wisdom says one must "fight" breast cancer, but fighting is not for everyone. For some, falling apart proves to be the better response. The Heroics of Falling Apart: One Couple's Breast Cancer Journey is the story of how one couple found their own authentic way to survive the ordeal of coping with a life-threatening illness. In separate voices, Judy and Dan Gordon relate and reflect on their yearlong journey with Judy's cancer, from diagnosis through the end of treatment. The Heroics of Falling Apart examines the broad range of experiences from the surprisingly different viewpoints of patient and caregiver, and does so with a candidness and humor that others facing a similar journey will find touching and inspiring, as well as informative. In the wake of a cancer diagnosis, there is an overwhelming amount of things to do-decisions to be made, questions to ponder, and emotions and people with which to cope. Often, simply knowing that there is no right or wrong way to get through it makes the journey bearable, a fact made strikingly clear through the Gordons' deeply personal and detailed account of their journey.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: After her diagnosis of hormone-negative breast cancer, health journalist Patricia Prijatel did what any reporter would do: start investigating the disease, how it occurs, how it's treated, and how to keep it from recurring. While she learned that important research on triple-negative breast cancer (TNBC) was emerging, she found a noticeable lack of resources on the disease, which differs from hormone-positive breast cancer in important ways, including prognosis and treatment options. Triple-negative breast cancer disproportionately affects younger women and African-American women-and some forms of it can be more dangerous than other types of breast cancer. But there are many reasons to be hopeful, as Prijatel shows in this book. Surviving Triple-Negative Breast Cancer delivers research-based information on the biology of TNBC; the role of genetics, family history, and race; how to navigate treatment options; understanding a pathology report; and a plethora of strategies to reduce the risk of recurrence, including diet and lifestyle changes. In clear, approachable language, Prijatel provides a fact-filled guide based on a vast array of scientific studies. Woven throughout the book are stories of women who have faced TNBC. These are mothers, wives, daughters, and sisters who went through a variety of medical treatments and then got on with life--one competes in triathlons, two had babies after being treated with chemo, one got remarried in her 50s, and one just celebrated the 30th birthday of the son she was nursing when she was diagnosed. Writing with honesty and humor, Prijatel delivers an inspiring message--that TNBC is a disease to take seriously, with proper and occasionally aggressive treatment, but it is not automatically a killer. Most women diagnosed with the disease survive and go on to live full lives. Surviving Triple-Negative Breast Cancer is a roadmap for women who want to be empowered through their treatment and recovery.

It tells the reader about my fears and my struggles in dealing with Cancer - the acceptance of having the disease, the surgeries, and its treatments. This book is written in an effort to assure any woman or man with Cancer that there is an end to the long journey. My readers should be assured that they are not alone. Today most Cancers are curable if they can be found early. Happiness and normal life will return again at the end of the journey. Book Review: Breast Cancer The Unplanned Journey Lessons Learned By Beverly Stacy Dittmer Reviewed by Mary Ann Noonan Breast Cancer The Unplanned Journey Lessons Learned, is the very personal journal of Beverly Stacy Dittmer's passage from finding a lump in her breast, through her anxious wait for the confirmed diagnosis of breast cancer that every woman dreads to hear, through her one step at a time trek from surgery through treatment and complications, and, finally, to a realization that life goes on and can become normal again. Beverly as a daughter, a sister, a wife, a mother, a grandmother, a friend, and a professional woman shares critical, yet sensitive, information about her diagnosis of breast cancer and its treatment. She makes it quite clear in the copyright page that "the medical statements in this book are only what I understood and are not to be taken as true medical facts," continuing that her knowledge about breast cancer was obtained in years 2003 and 2004. In addition, she includes a personal touch to her 222 page manuscript describing many relationships and human interest stories about life with her husband, her family, her friends, her personal activities, and travels. The reader follows Beverly as she relates her cancer journey one step at a time-the good times and the bad. In a detailed, remarkably sensitive, casual, almost speaking to the audience style, Dittmer writes about everyday life while facing a life threatening condition. She shares words of advice and reminders about living each day with confidence and courage that there is light at the end of the tunnel while including "lessons learned" in the last four pages. Encouragement is granted to the reader by the author's constructive council that "there is an end to this long journey." Through her direct and candid accounts it was obvious that she was not alone in this walk. As a professional nurse practitioner and retired professor of nursing, reading Beverly Stacy Dittmer's personal story reinforces the importance for health care providers to listen and to be present to all individuals for whom they care. For the person with a life-threatening illness, this read will provide a source of strength and encouragement. For the student of nursing and medicine it is a must read.
