Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is about helping troubled young people who are searching separately for security, identity, and purpose in their lives. Childhood and adolescence are pivotal stages in the quest to belong, to become somebody, and to be worth something. Children need stimulation, affection, and guidance in order to develop their potentials, but many are reared in environments that deprive them of these nutriments. Adolescents approach the threshold of independence with only the experiences gained from childhood; many lack the support of significant actions. Those who encounter difficulty in navigating through these turbulent years are to be identified by society as troubled or troublesome. These children and youth present challenges that do not yield to simple panaceas. Although no simple approach holds all the answers, bridging various concepts of education and treatment offers the best opportunity for creating positive changes. The authors refer to this process as “re-education” with full awareness that this term has been used in a variety of philosophical contexts including behavioral, ecological, and psychodynamic views.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Placement of students with disabilities in the least restrictive environment has become a central issue in special education. To date, no comprehensive treatment of placement issues is available, especially for students with emotional and behavioral disorders who present particularly difficult placement problems. This book combines data and discussions intended to further the understanding of how and why decisions are made to place students with emotional or behavioral disorders in particular educational environments. This volume establishes the problem of placement in a contemporary and historical context, reviews the literature on placement of students with emotional or behavioral disorders, and discusses placement options and concerns about multicultural issues, post-secondary education, law and regulation, demands on teachers, and policy choices. Its goals are to: * improve understanding of decision processes leading to placement, * set the stage for improvements in pupils' lives in school and elsewhere, and * stimulate research on the many placement issues that are left unresolved.

Book excerpt: The life span of day treatment for children in the United States is relatively short, covering a period of about 50 years. Although the first 20 years saw little growth in the number of centers operating around the country, the concept of day treatment was recognized by the Joint Commission on Mental Illness and Health in 1961 as the most significant treatment innovation of this century. Enthusiasm for this treatment modality gained impetus from growing dissatisfaction among many mental health care providers who had no choice but to place children in a highly restrictive hospital environment. Day treat ment did not carry the stigma associated with inpatient placement. The children could now remain with their own families and within their own communities. The parents could be actively included in their child's treatment. This new modality avoided the short- and long-term negative effects of institutionalization, and there was a fa vorable cost discrepancy between day and inpatient mental health services. In more recent years, there has been growing evidence of the efficacy of day treatment as an intensive therapeutic environment for children and their parents. Despite these advantages, day treatment has continued to be underutilized in favor of inpatient treatment by both the psychiatric community and third-party payers. Only recently is it being acknowledged by some insurers as a therapeutically sound and financially advantageous alternative to inpatient services. Conse quently, it is showing signs of intense growth nationally.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Students in Discord fills a void in the professional literature concerning adolescents with emotional and behavioral disorders by providing theoretical information about psychiatric and psychological diagnoses with practical information about actual public school students who show both externalizing and internalizing disorders. In the process, the book provides understanding about disorders in childhood and adolescence and enhances understanding of federal guidelines on emotional disturbance, specifically those provided in the Individuals With Disabilities Education Act. The author provides suggested educational strategies that represent behavioral, psychological, sociological, and environmental models and that aim to both decrease undesirable behaviors and increase desirable ones. Theoretical issues covering disorders related to personality, disruptive behavior, eating, mood, anxiety, and development are illustrated by 57 adolescents whose feelings and behaviors are presented through anecdotal material, direct quotes from them and their teachers, life facts, and student writings. Additional perspectives are provided by comparing federal and practical definitional characteristics of emotional disturbance and discussing concerns about the inability of students with emotional and behavioral disorders to detach, the inclusion of socially-maladjusted students in the ED (emotionally disturbed) category, and the interrelation of emotional and behavioral disorders.
