To identify all the sources of information, and to list documents that discuss research on teachers’ attitudes. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The School Teacher in England and the United States: The Findings of Empirical Research investigates what makes school teachers distinct from other people in England and the United States. This book brings together for the first time the findings of a very large number of surveys on both sides of the Atlantic designed to throw light on a number of critical questions, such as the teachers' family backgrounds, their motives for becoming teachers, or the types of role-conflict affecting teachers in general, and women teachers (including married women) in particular. This monograph is comprised of 10 chapters and begins by comparing the British and American educational settings. The next chapter discusses the role that society is believed to expect teachers to fulfill, such as emancipation from the child's primary emotional attachment to his family, or the technical component of the skills which have to be transmitted to the pupils to enable them to fulfill their future adult roles. The empirical evidence on society's view of what role the teachers should play is then analyzed. A typology of incompatibilities inherent in teacher role is also presented. The remaining chapters focus on the teachers' expressed motivation in career choice; the stages at which people choose teaching; teacher effectiveness and career satisfaction; and the teachers' professional status. The final chapter considers some policy alternatives for addressing the training and supply of teachers. This text will be a useful resource for teachers, school administrators, and educational policymakers.

There were 80 students in the focus groups, 56 girls, 24 boys and 58 were doing mathematics/science subjects. Book Synopsis The Color of Teaching by : June Gordon
Download or read book The Color of Teaching written by June Gordon and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2002-11-01 with total page 146 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: One of the major concerns in education at present is how to recruit and attract more teachers from ethnic minorities. In an attempt to move beyond the superficial and simplistic responses as to why these students are not entering teaching this book presents in-depth interviews with over two hundred people from four ethnic groups: African Americans, Native Americans, Asian Americans and Latinos. These interviewees, many of them teachers or education professionals, express their attitude towards teaching and their understanding of why others may not choose teaching as a career. One of the most significant and surprising findings is that, regardless of academic or socio-economic standing, students from these ethnic groups tend not to be encouraged to enter the teaching profession by their own families communities and peers. The book concludes with a discussion of programmatic changes and calls for the reconceptualization of the role of teachers. Such changes can only arise out of a fundamental change in attitude of communities of color towards teaching which must be led by teachers themselves.

Book Synopsis The Science Teaching Efficacy Belief Instruments (STEBI A and B) by : James Deehan
Download or read book The Science Teaching Efficacy Belief Instruments (STEBI A and B) written by James Deehan and published by Springer. This book was released on 2016-07-28 with total page 93 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The purpose of this Springer Brief is to provide a comprehensive review of both the STEBI methods and findings through the use of a clearly defined analytic framework. A systematic review of literature yielded 107 STEBI-A research items and 140 STEBI-B research items. The STEBI instruments have been used in a wide range of qualitative, cross sectional, longitudinal and experimental designs. Analysis of the findings of the papers reveals that in-service and pre-service programs that use innovative practices such as cooperative learning, inquiry based investigation and nature of science instruction can produce positive growth in participants’ science teaching efficacy beliefs. The personal science teaching efficacy beliefs of pre-service and in-service teachers showed greater mean scores and higher growth than their outcome expectancies. Implications are discussed.

Book Synopsis Successful Educational Actions for Inclusion and Social Cohesion in Europe by : Ramon Flecha (Ed.)
Download or read book Successful Educational Actions for Inclusion and Social Cohesion in Europe written by Ramon Flecha (Ed.) and published by Springer. This book was released on 2014-11-14 with total page 115 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This monograph analyses and describes successful educational actions with a specific focus on vulnerable groups (i.e. youth, migrants, cultural groups e.g. Roma, women, and people with disabilities). Concrete data that shows success in school performance in subject matters such as math or language will be provided, as well as children, teachers and families accounts of the impact of this success. Alongside, there is an analysis of the relationship between these children’s educational performance with their inclusion or exclusion from different areas of society (i.e. housing, health, employment, and social and political participation). Many studies have already diagnosed and described the causes of educational and social exclusion of these vulnerable groups. This monograph, however, provides solutions, that is, actions for success identified through the INCLUD-ED project, thus providing both, contrasted data and solid theoretical background and development. Some examples of these actions are interactive groups (or heterogeneous grouping in the classroom with reorganisation of human resources), extension of the learning time, homework clubs, tutored libraries, family and community educative participation, family education, or dialogic literary gatherings. All these actions have been defined as successful educational actions, which mean that they lead to both efficiency and equity. Finally, recommendations for policy and practice are included and discussed.
