Book excerpt: Excerpt from Under the Southern Cross in South America Until comparatively recent times - only a few years back - South America was regarded by the great majority outside its confines as the least known and, therefore, least understood part of the world; and North Americans looked upon it as the part from which least might be expected as far as their own interests were concerned. Journalists and newspaper men were accustomed to picture it as a mysterious land whose chief productions were deadly fevers and frequent insurrections. Indeed, in most cases, when the press mentioned it the purpose was only to chronicle some sanguinary revolution or outburst of border warfare. Several reasons contributed to keep South America in the background and leave it an unappreciated and neglected continent. In the first place its situation was against its becoming more familiar to northern lands. It stretches to the Far South, entirely away from the usual lines of travel and the beaten paths of the ordinary tourist. Few Americans have inclination or time to make personal acquaintance with the peoples and countries below the northern rim of the earth, where the Southern Cross shimmers overhead and where Christmas comes in the heat of summer and July the Fourth occurs in the middle of winter. In the next place our Monroe Doctrine kept foreign hands off this section of the Western Hemisphere; it prevented the European Powers from making it a battle-ground for the acquisition of new territory; hence, no diplomatic problems presented themselves for solution to bring the country to public attention, - it was kept isolated, as it were, from foreign entanglements, a good thing in one way, but harmful in another, as relegating it to its own obscurity. In the third place the ephemeral revolutions did not jeopardize in general the lives or property of foreigners, and consequently, our State Department was not called upon to interfere in the settlement of domestic or foreign claims; it is only very lately that its aid has been invoked in this respect. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Lands of the Southern Cross: A Visit to South America No pretense is made in this little work of furnishing an exhaustive study on South America. Volumes would be re quired for the purpose. I have merely contented myself with gathering my own impressions, and recording the results of such studies as harmonized with the general plan of the book. South America is attracting increased attention, and a num ber of works are appearing which add to our fund of knowl edge. I venture to trust that my small contribution will be of some service, as well to the tourist, as to those who wish to form a general idea of the other half of our continent. It is a pleasure to record my gratitude to Mr. Franklin Adams, of the pan-american Union, and to Mr. C. E. Bab cock, librarian of the Institution, for their constant willing ness to aid me by their advice. The friends I made in South America are too numerous to mention, but their memory abides with me. Their works which they lavishly bestowed have proved to be of invaluable assistance. As a delegate of the United States to the International Congress of Americanists, I had opportunities of meeting many whom 1, otherwise, would not have known, and I, consequently, feel grateful to our Secretary of State, and to the authorities of the Smithsonian Institution, for the appointment. The colours are hardly dry, and both picture and tale are quite unvarnished. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Cumorah's Southern Cross, Vol. 4: September, 1930 Our Lord's personal testimony is con elusive. Of the disciples He asked What and if ye see the Son of Man ascend up where he was before? (john On another occasion He averred: I came forth from the Father, and am come into the world: again, I leave the world, and go to the Father. (john 16: In solemn prayer He implored: 'arid now, 0 Father, glorify thou me with thine own self with the glory which I had with thee before the world was (john 17: When assailed on a certain occasion by some who took offense at His teachings and who arrogantly proclaimed themselves to be Abraham's children, our Lord. Thus avowed His preeminence: Jesus said unto them, Verily, verily, I say unto you. Before Abraham was, I am (john 8 This was equivalent to saying, Before Abraham was I, Jehovah, for by the awe-inspiring title, I Am, He had revealed Himself to Moses (see Exo. 3: 14; compare 6: 3) and I Am is the equi valent of Jahreh, now rendered Jehovah, and signifies The Eternal One.
