Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Under the German Shells Life is a curious thing. In time of war Life is itself the extraordinary and Death seems the only ordinary thing possible for men. In time of war man is but a straw thrown into the Wide ocean. If the tossing waves do not engulf him he can do no more than float on the surface. God alone knows his destiny. This book, Under the German Shells, is another instance of war's uncertainties. Sent by my government to America to join the new Amer ican army as instructor, I wrote the greater part of the book on the steamer which brought me. The reader will, perhaps, read it when I am dead; for another steamer is about to carry me back to France, where I shall again be under the German shells, before the book will see the light. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is an colour illustrated compendium of all shell in use by the German Army in early 1916. It was compiled from actual examples of the shells and from German pamphlets describing the use the shells were to be put to.Each shell, and there are many, is described in the text and (almost always) with a coloured scale drawing of the shell itself. The calibres range from the 3.7cm and its variations through to the 42cm heavy shell. It also includes gas and shrapnel shells and mortar projectiles. The introduction is a table of all shells used with a description of their basic colour, the German name for the shell, and an index reference within the book.Included in this reprint are the various amendments (23 in all) which were issued after publication of this basic manual, each amendment following the structure of the main book. Thus there are many more coloured illustrations. The description of the shells is extremely detailed, and includes a section on 'Employment' - where and when the German gunners would fire that particular shell, and there is a section on Remarks, which is very important.

Book excerpt: Thin-walled metal shell structures are highly efficient in their use of material, but they are particularly sensitive to failure by buckiling. Many different forms of buckling can occur for different geometries and different loading conditions. Because this field of knowledge is both complex and industrially important, it is of great interest and c
Book Synopsis Stability of Nonlinear Shells by : D. Shilkrut
Download or read book Stability of Nonlinear Shells written by D. Shilkrut and published by Elsevier. This book was released on 2002-06-18 with total page 483 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Stability of NonLinear Shells is a compilation of the author's work on analyzing the behaviour of spherical caps and related shell structures under various (axisymmetric) load systems. Differing from other texts on shells of revolution, it is one of the first attempts to deal with effects of multi-parameter load systems. This extension leads to the discovery of some new, hitherto unknown phenomena exhibited by these structures. In addition, the book presents a novel way to characterize properties of solutions of the governing equations for spherical caps - a classification anchored in a theory called reciprocal systems. The author has introduced a deformation map, a projection of multi-dimensional solutions to two-dimensional graphs, to enable analysts to gain insight into the physical meaning of the results obtained. Numerous examples illustrate the concepts introduced. This book also comes to grips with many misconceptions existing in engineering literature about the question of the stability of solutions.
