Book excerpt: This book constitutes the thoroughly refereed post-conference proceedings of the JSAI-isAI 2015 Workshops LENLS 12, JURISIN 9, AAA 2015, HAT-MASH 2015, TSDAA 2015, ASD-HR 2015, and SKL 2015, held in Kanagawa, Japan, in November 2015. The 39 regular papers presented in this volume were carefully reviewed and selected from 114 submissions. LENLS 12 (Logic and Engineering of Natural Language Semantics) is an annual international workshop on formal semantics and pragmatics and focused on discourse particles; disjunction; truth; copredication; expressive content; categorial grammar; dependent type semantics; sequent calculus; and various aspects of formal pragmatics. JURISIN 9 (Juris-Informatics) is the 9th event in the series. The purpose of this workshop is to discuss fundamental and practical issues such as law, social science, information and intelligent technology, logic and philosophy, including the conventional “AI and law” area. AAA 2015 (Argument for Agreement and Assurance) has the goal of deepening a mutual understanding and exploring a new research field involving researchers/practitioners in formal and informal logic, artificial intelligence, and safety engineering working on agreement and assurance through argument. HAT-MASH 2015 (Healthy Aging Tech Mashup Service, Data and People) provides a forum to discuss important research questions and practical challenges in healthy aging and elderly care support to promote transdisciplinary approaches. TSDAA 2015 (Workshop on Time Series Data Analysis and its Applications) aimes at providing an interdisciplinary forum for discussion of different approaches and techniques of time series data analysis and their implementation in various real life applications. ASD-HR 2015 (Autism Spectrum Disorders Using a Humanoid Robot) presents the studies in the interdisciplinary field of research including both engineering and medical sides. SKL 2015 (Skill Science) discusses the theoretical foundations of skill science as well as practical and engineering issues.

Book excerpt: Gisbert Fanselow’s work has been invaluable and inspiring to many researchers working on syntax, morphology, and information structure, both from a theoretical and from an experimental perspective. This volume comprises a collection of articles dedicated to Gisbert on the occasion of his 60th birthday, covering a range of topics from these areas and beyond. The contributions have in common that in a broad sense they have to do with language structures (and thus trees), and that in a more specific sense they have to do with birds. They thus cover two of Gisbert’s major interests in- and outside of the linguistic world (and perhaps even at the interface).

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: My life had been going nowhere. Until I was diagnosed with cancer. 12 June 1995. On his twenty-eighth birthday, Raz Shaw was a directionless gambling addict doing a telesales job that was eating up every trace of what soul he had left. The next day he would be diagnosed with stage 4 sclerosing mediastinal non-Hodgkin’s lymphoma of the large cell type. As he tells it, cancer saved his life. He was given the all-clear in March 1996, and stopped gambling for good that April. After a year away recuperating, he turned his back on the highly paid job that had devoured him and re-assimilated himself into the world of theatre that had once made him feel so alive. It took him a long time to realise quite how much these recoveries were bound up with one another – now he is ready to tell his story. Death and the Elephant is a memoir of living through and beyond illness and addiction. Blessed with the ability to find humour even in life’s darkest moments, Raz charts his struggles with irreverence and unflinching perspective. This is his story, but it’s also a universal one – an honest, funny, sometimes raw, and often inappropriate glimpse into the mind of a young man dealing with a life-threatening illness in the only way he knows how: by laughing in its face.

Book excerpt: Situation Theory grew out of attempts by Jon Barwise in the late 1970s to provide a semantics for 'naked-infinitive' perceptual reports such as 'Claire saw Jon run'. Barwise's intuition was that Claire didn't just see Jon, an individual, but Jon doing something, a situation. Situations are individuals having properties and standing in relations. A theory of situations would allow us to study and compare various types of situations or situation-like entitles, such as facts, events, and scenes. One of the central themes of situation theory of meaning and reference should be set within a general theory of information, one moreover that is rich enough to do justice to perception, communication, and thought. By now many people have contributed by the need to give a rigorous mathematical account of the principles of information that underwrite the theory.

It is free to read at Oxford Scholarship Online and offered as a free PDF download from OUP and selected open access locations. This book presents a new logical framework to capture the meaning of sentences in conversation. The traditional approach equates meaning with truth-conditions: to know the meaning of a sentence is to know under which circumstances it is true. The reason for this is that linguistic and philosophical investigations are usually carried out in a logical framework that was originally designed to characterize valid argumentation. However, argumentation is neither the sole, nor the primary function of language. One task that language more widely and ordinarily fulfils is to enable the exchange of information between conversational participants. In the framework outlined in this volume, inquisitive semantics, information exchange is seen as a process of raising and resolving issues. Inquisitive semantics provides a new formal notion of meaning, which makes it possible to model various concepts that are crucial for the analysis of linguistic information exchange in a more refined and more principled way than has been possible in previous frameworks. Importantly, it also allows an integrated treatment of statements and questions. The first part of the book presents the framework in detail, while the second demonstrates its benefits in the semantic analysis of questions, coordination, modals, conditionals, and intonation. The book will be of interest to researchers and students from advanced undergraduate level upwards in the fields of semantics, pragmatics, philosophy of language, and logic.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book offers the first comprehensive exploration of the relevance of naturalism and theories of nature in Classical German Philosophy. It presents new readings from internationally renowned scholars on Kant, Jacobi, Goethe, the Romantic tradition, Fichte, Schelling, Hegel, and Marx that highlight the significance of conceptions of nature and naturalism in Classical German Philosophy for contemporary concerns. The collection presents an inclusive view: it goes beyond the usual restricted focus on single thinkers to encompass the tradition as a whole, prompting dialogue among scholars interested in different authors and areas. It thus illuminates the post-Kantian tradition in a new, wider sense. The chapters also mobilize a productive perspective at the intersection of philosophy and history by combining careful textual and historical analysis with argument-based philosophizing. Overall, the book challenges the stereotypical view that Classical German Philosophy offers at best only an idealistic, one-sided, anachronistic, and theological view of nature. It invites readers to put traditional views in dialogue with current discussions of nature and naturalism. Nature and Naturalism in Classical German Philosophy will be of interest to scholars and advanced students working on Classical German Philosophy, 19th-Century Philosophy, and contemporary perspectives on naturalism.
