Book excerpt: This book will be entertaining, which is what it was intended to be. To some, it may even be offensive, but it is the story of a man that actually existed; a man of great courage and few resources, a man who protected and loved his family in the midst of great human challenges. This book will let you become acquainted with an unusual man who possessed an uncanny sense of impending danger; a gift that allowed him to see the other man's character weaknesses in time to arm himself with the necessary armor needed for the moment. Excluding a few words in the beginning chapters of the book, to make the story interesting, ninety- five percent of this book is true, as told to the author by his father, his aunt, and his uncles. Many stories were also supplied by the author's mother and many other family members.

Book excerpt: Since the 1960's here has been an extraordinary revival of old-time string band music in California, and indeed throughout the American West. Despite being born blind, Kenny Hall has been a mainstay of many fiddle festivals and of the Western fiddle and string band revival in general. Kenny's musical style is passionate and energetic. This book is a helpful guide to his vast repertoire learned through years of careful listening. It is also a wonderful addition to the fiddler's bookshelf and a fitting tribute to a man who, for many an aspiring fiddler, has been a friend, guide, exemplar, and patron. Many of the tunes includes nonsense lyrics that Kenny used to help him remember the melody, and each tune is accompanied by Kenny's comments. the book is divided into five chapters: fiddle- based tunes (Fiddle Faddle), mandolin-based tunes (Rags, Tags, and Wags), Waltzes, tunes from an origin other than the United States or the British Isles (Kenny's Rambles); and vocal-based pieces including lyrics (Songs, Ballads, Ditties). Some of the transcriptions are written primarily for fiddle or mandolin, but most tunes can be performed on either instrument. This deluxe guide to Kenny Hall's vast repertoire offers fans of old-time music a great way to get to know Kenny and his music.

Book excerpt: There are elements of a way of life that likely will not come our way again in Carolyn Sue Noah Graetz homespun, sometimes intense, paperback memoir A Look into the Rear View Mirror. In writing her book, graetz repeats genealogical information, linking the life and times of some ancestors to events of the wider world. This is a good method that might invite borrowing from any number of amateur genealogists who take the plunge Gratez did and do some volumes.

Book excerpt: “You don’t look like brothers . . .” Peace activist and cofounder of the Enough Project, John Prendergast is known as a champion of human rights in Africa. But the not-so-public face of J.P. is the life he’s led as a Big Brother to Michael Mattocks. As a curious, driven, and emotionally wounded twenty-year-old, J.P. made the life-changing decision to form a “Big Brother/Little Brother” relationship with then seven-year-old Michael, who was living out of plastic bags and drifting from one homeless shelter to the next with his mother and siblings. Lacking a connection with his own brother and distancing himself from a disastrous relationship with his father, J.P. formed a unique bond with Michael the moment they met. Michael and J.P. became like family, with Michael and some of his siblings even living with J.P. one summer. In the years that followed, J.P. took Michael and his brothers on outings, whether it was fishing, playing basketball, patronizing cheap restaurants, or going on road trips. This friendship would continue for over twenty-five years as the two coped with varying degrees of violence, instability, and trauma in their own lives. Told in duet, Unlikely Brothers follows Michael as he grows up on the tough streets of Washington, D.C., where as a young teenager he watched his best friend get shot, dropped out of school, and started dealing crack cocaine shortly thereafter. By sixteen, Michael had become the kingpin of his neighborhood, guns and drugs always close at hand. Meanwhile, J.P. was traveling to and from African war zones. J.P. offered Michael a refuge from the streets, never really confronting the gravity of what Michael was going through in his adolescence. In turn, Michael afforded J.P. an escape from his own turbulent personal and professional life. As the years go by, the two swoop in and out of each other’s lives, slowly disconnecting as they disappear into their respective worlds, but making their way back to each other at a critical moment for both of them. The effect the two have on each other is extremely significant to both of their paths to redemption. Inspirational and deeply moving, Unlikely Brothers beautifully showcases how life’s most random moments can often be the most profound.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Though she died penniless and forgotten, Zora Neale Hurston is now recognized as a major figure in African American literature. Best known for her 1937 novel Their Eyes Were Watching God, she also published numerous short stories and essays, three other novels, and two books on black folklore. Even avid readers of Hurston’s prose, however, may be surprised to know that she was also a serious and ambitious playwright throughout her career. Although several of her plays were produced during her lifetime—and some to public acclaim—they have languished in obscurity for years. Even now, most critics and historians gloss over these texts, treating them as supplementary material for understanding her novels. Yet, Hurston’s dramatic works stand on their own merits and independently of her fiction. Now, eleven of these forgotten dramatic writings are being published together for the first time in this carefully edited and annotated volume. Filled with lively characters, vibrant images of rural and city life, biblical and folk tales, voodoo, and, most importantly, the blues, readers will discover a “real Negro theater” that embraces all the richness of black life.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A family's love is the best kind of love. It is the first love we learn through our parents and siblings. God express his love for us when he gave his only son to save us. Life is a challenge; sometimes the choices and chances we take are wrong, and then there are the ones we learn from that makes us strong. Don't be so quick to give up on one another. You never know when the road will curve in your life. Family or not, be kind and respectful to one another, 'cause in the blink of an eye, things can change. Stop holding on to hate and letting hate take over. Jeanette made the choice to leave and get help for her addiction. She took the chance on putting it off until later. We aren't the judge of one another, so we cannot say or assume she was too late to turn around. What took place between her and God is unknown. Losing Jeanette was a very hard chapter in our lives. Raising her four daughters with so much sadness, hurt, and anger wasn't easy for us. We managed to keep all four girls within the family; holding on to God's grace, we gave plenty of love and patience to raise these four beautiful girls. No one can predict what will happen in our lifetime. We will lose loved ones and friends along the way. Whether it's by a violent crime, accident, sickness, or old age, it will cause deep pain. These four girls lost their mother at a very young age and with no father to lean on. Now they are grown and raising families of their own. A couple's love is a special bond between two people, but to find a special person is to have a bond with God. You can pray to God day and night, but if you aren't living right, he won't hear you. No one is perfect, but to do your best by living by his word, and he will overlook the rest. He loves us unconditionally that is why he laid down on the cross for us. I myself had given up on love because of so many broken promises and failed relationships. I felt this late in life, love wasn't in the stars for me, so I turned it over to God and left it there. And just when I thought all was lost, there he was, an old friend whom I once had the sparkles of a thousand stars for but never expressed it. To me, the time we lost touch had never happened, about four years or so. He was still that tall, handsome, warm-spirited gentleman I met years ago. We continue being friends like no time had passed until he said six words that will be forever imbedded in my heart, "You know I like you, right?" From there, a beautiful relationship was started.

Book excerpt: Suzanne believes she knows who she is: a former wild child, neither virgin nor virginal as a teen; someone who pulls for the wayward girls and troubled boys she now teaches in Minnesota. She has learned to survive good love and bad love and people who don't care at all. At her rented cabin, she gathers strength, like a storm forming over the lake. While looking for a spark in her life, a random coincidence leads Suzanne to try to unlock a harrowing event from her past. She is drawn into an unusual relationship with Alpha Breville, a convicted criminal with a disturbing history; simultaneously, she begins seeing an unpredictable, dark-haired drifter—a cowboy who's part angel, part howling dog. Though the cowboy matches Suzanne in intensity and desire, he's less faithful than the captive Breville. Which man can offer Suzanne the knowledge she seeks? Which man can truly touch her? How can she find her unique peace? In writing that has been likened to Kate Chopin's, Maureen Gibbon constructs a taut story of desire at the other end of the Mississippi, in the north woods of Minnesota. Against deep lakes, casinos, and a bar named the Royal, Gibbon's unconventional characters show us how to play the hands we're dealt and own the choices we make, in a tough and tender book about hard-won redemption from one of America's most original writers.

Book excerpt: Del Rio. Val Verde. By the river. The Green Valley. The great grand parents and their kin came. By horse . . . wagon . . . stage coach . . . foot back. They settled the village. Helped name it Del Rio. Assisted in forming Val Verde County. Grandparents told stories: of their coming to live in the wonderful country where Devils River, the Pecos, and the Rio Grande meet . . . of early times in the boundary area where the Chihuahuan Desert from the west meets hills of the Edwards Plateau to the north and merges with Tamaulipas brush land from the south and the east. Times change. Winter-time tale-tellings before the fireplace on grand-dad’s knee . . . warm-weather story-sharings on the back porch in grand-ma’s lap . . . wisps of Prince Albert pipe smoke . . .twinkings of twilight fire-flies . . . all eroded away by movies, television, and cell phones. But there are still stories to tell. Tales to pass on. Things we want children – grandchildren – those still to come – to remember – in times yet to be. This book is a gathering of happenings – remembrances of events – glimpses of parenting – thoughts of yesteryear. It tells of: Horses and windmills and tarantulas . . . a wrong-way bus trip . . . a hidden wedding ring . . . sycamore trees . . . a lost bath and football shack showers . . . lions and toads and tin soldiers . . . a picket fence . . . old telephones . . . poison pig weed . . . a crusty old red rooster . . . building boats and reviving old cars . . . holiday traditions . . . hunting experiences . . . sailing fiascos . . . and more.

Book excerpt: I wanted to die... Sometimes I'd sit and try to will myself to death so I could fade away. I truly believed no one in this world loved me because I was not lovable, and I agreed with my mother that I should never have been born. Mary Eliza Reese Jr., also known as 'Little Mary, ' was born in Jackson, Mississippi, and reared in Los Angeles, California. As an African American living during the racial tension of the '50s and '60s, Little Mary found her light-colored skin to be a major issue, but that wasn't her only problem. Little Mary's mother, 'Big Mary, ' caused her to endure numerous life-threatening situations due to her drinking problem. Big Mary was co-owner of a well-known and respected mortuary in the African American community in Los Angeles. Little Mary's childhood experiences, and the mental and physical abuse she grudgingly faced each day, led her to believe that her only true friends were the dead people in her mother's mortuary. Little Mary's story tells what really happens behind the embalming room doors-the light and dark side of life. In her incredible and extraordinary memoir, A Soul Survivor, author Mary Ross Smith explores the depths of human emotions, both real and imagined. That any of us reach adulthood in one piece, emotionally or physically, is a miracle of no small proportion. That any of us reach adulthood to contribute back to society and become highly respected in the community is truly a gift of time and place. Little Mary's story is one of heartbreak and anguish, but one that ends in triumph. It is an enlightening and revealing peek into the unexpected and is, in the end, a story of A Soul Survivor.

Book excerpt: Soul Survivor explores the depths of human emotions, both real and imagined. That any of us reach adulthood in one piece, emotionally or physically is a miracle of no small proportion. That any of us reach adulthood to contribute back to society and become highly respected in the community is truly a gift of time and place. Soul Survivor is a true story of fortitude, an iron will and looking to the future in the hope that tomorrow will be better than today. Soul Survivor is nothing less than a story of triumph. “Little Mary” Reese spent her childhood living, working and playing in a funeral home. Her mother, Mrs. Mary (“Big Mary”) Reese, was well known and respected in the African-American community in Los Angeles through the operation of a prestigious black funeral home. Little Mary’s story tells what really happens behind the embalming room doors- the light and dark side of life. Soul Survivor is both humorous and mischievous, and talks of sex, murder, voodoo, preachers and deviate gravediggers. Famous entertainers that passed through Little Mary’s life include Redd Foxx, Lou Rawls, Sam Cooke, Billy Preston and Johnny Cochran. Little Mary was born in 1944 in the South, reared in the Southwest and was often disparagingly referred to as “high-yellow.” During racial tensions of the ‘50s and ‘60s, Little Mary found her hue to be a major issue but not her only problem. Mary’s mother caused her to endure life threatening situations due to her drinking and wild ways. Little Mary’s childhood experiences, the mental and physical abuse faced each day, led her to believe that her only true friends were the dead people in the funeral home. Indeed, Little Mary received a BS degree (Be Smart) at an early age. It was the only way she knew to survive. Little Mary’s story is an unlikely but revealing peek into the unexpected and in the end, truly a story of a Soul Survivor.
