Celle-ci sera considérée dans toute l'historiographie du xxe siècle comme le lieu où se sont formés les premiers artistes de la modernité vietnamienne. Pour comprendre les prémisses de cette aventure, il fallait présenter le contexte culturel colonial et la personnalité de Victor Tardieu porteur de ce projet. Il fallait ensuite approfondir les arguments échangés dans la polémique opposant les auteurs des trois textes retenus ici et en mesurer la portée en les comparant aux idées qui circulaient à la même époque en Extrême-Orient. L'ambition d'atteindre à un art national faisant la « synthèse » des apports occidentaux et extrême-orientaux nous amenait ensuite à nous interroger sur la pertinence du concept de synthèse et son usage dans le cadre colonial. Au-delà de cette interrogation, c'était aussi une invitation à réfléchir sur l'interprétation d'une modernité extra-européenne qu'il convient d'apprécier à partir de critères nouveaux. Les trois documents ayant servi de point de départ à cette enquête sont reproduits intégralement en annexe.

Postcolonial Bergson traces the influence of Bergson’s thought through the work of two major figures in the postcolonial struggle, Muhammad Iqbal and Léopold Sédar Senghor. Poets and statesmen as well as philosophers, both of these thinkers—the one Muslim and the other Catholic—played an essential political and intellectual role in the independence of their respective countries. Both found, in Bergson’s work, important support for their philosophical, cultural, and political projects. For Iqbal, a founding father of independent Pakistan, Bergson’s conceptions of time and creative evolution resonated with the need for the “reconstruction of religious thought in Islam,” a religious thought newly able to incorporate innovation and change. The major protagonists include Thomas Church, Roberto Burle Marx, Isamu Noguchi, Luis Barragan, Daniel Urban Kiley, Stanley White, Hideo Sasaki, Ian McHarg, Lawrence Halprin, and Garrett Eckbo. They were the pioneers of a new profession in America, the first to offer alternatives to the historic landscape and the park tradition, as well as to the suburban sprawl and other unplanned developments of twentieth-century cities and institutions. The work is described against the backdrop of the Great Depression, the Second World War, the postwar recovery, American corporate expansion, and the environmental revolution. The authors look at unbuilt schemes as well as actual gardens, ranging from tiny backyards and play spaces to urban plazas and corporate villas.
