Book excerpt: Ultrafast spectroscopies on the femtosecond timescale are well suited to study electronic dynamics and coupling between quasiparticles in condensed matter systems. These interactions are of great fundamental importance and have widespread applications in engineering. Future developments in spintronics, valleytronics, and optoelectronics depend on an understanding of the couplings of electrons, phonons, magnons, and plasmons. Quasiparticle interactions take place on ultrafast timescales and can be investigated at visible and far infrared wavelengths. This work describes the development and application of time- and frequency-resolved spectroscopies to several important systems, with the purpose of directly detecting the specific quasiparticles involved in the dynamics and determining the timescales of their interactions. First, transient absorption spectroscopy and pump-degenerate four-wave mixing are utilized together to observe the electron-phonon and phonon-phonon scattering in transition metal dichalcogenides. These two spectroscopies jointly identify the specific phonons involved in these interactions. The application of pump-dlegenerate four-wave mixing to a solid state material is novel and requires an in-depth discussion of the interpretation of the measurement. Second, a time-resolved and time-domain terahertz spectroscopy instrument is developed. The characterization of the system is provided and two individual studies show its capabilities. Magnon excitations in single crystal NiO are first measured with terahertz absorption spectroscopy. The determination of these magnon frequencies demonstrates the high frequency resolution of the instrument. Following the magnon study, the charge carrier lifetimes in GaAs and ErAs:GaAs heterostructures are measured with optical pump-terahertz probe spectroscopy. The instrumentation and models of the ultrafast dynamics provide a framework for studying quasiparticle interactions in solid state systems with these techniques.

Book excerpt: The last research frontier in high frequency electronics lies in the so-called terahertz (or submillimeter wave) regime, between the traditional microwave and the infrared domains. Significant scientific and technical challenges within the terahertz (THz) frequency regime have recently motivated an array of new research activities. During the last few years, major research programs have emerged that are focused on advancing the state of the art in THz frequency electronic technology and on investigating novel applications of THz frequency sensing. This book provides a detailed review of the new THz frequency technological developments that are emerging across a wide spectrum of sensing and technology areas.Volume II presents cutting edge results in two primary areas: (1) research that is attempting to establish THz-frequency sensing as a new characterization tool for chemical, biological and semiconductor materials, and (2) theoretical and experimental efforts to define new device concepts within the “THz gap”.

Book excerpt: Terahertz (THz), the frequency region that bridges the gap between the radio and optical frequencies in the electromagnetic spectrum, is of both scientific and technological importance. Its broad applications, however, have been limited by the availability of bright sources and sensitive detectors. The invention of modelocked femtosecond lasers has made possible the generation and detection of electromagnetic transients on the picosecond to sub-picosecond time scale, which correspond to broadband coherent radiation up to a few or 10{u2019}s THz. This time-domain technique has had a significant impact on spectroscopy, imaging and sensing. While detectors and emitters have been the main interest in the development of THz technology, other components such as modulators, reflectors and filters are also of importance. In Chapter 2 we apply THz transmission spectroscopy to characterize polymeric materials and nano-composites. We demonstrate the design and fabrication of THz mirrors based on one-dimensional photonic crystals consisting thermoplastic polymers and BaTiO3 nanoparticles. Stop bands have been achieved in the THz region, and the results agree well with the prediction of the transfer matrix method. The main focus of this thesis is to study charge transport and carrier dynamics in low dimensional materials using THz time-domain spectroscopy. In contrast to conventional transport measurements, where electrical contacts are required, the THz method based on freely propagating electromagnetic transients can probe the electronic transport in a contactless fashion. In Chapter 3 we investigate highly oriented pyrolytic graphite (HOPG) using the THz emission spectroscopy. The direction, spectrum, polarization and dynamics of the emitted THz radiation from graphite upon ultrafast photoexcitation reveal the emission mechanism as well as the out-of-plane transport properties of graphite. In Chapter 4 metal phthalocyanines have been investigated by the optical pump/THz probe technique. Disc-like phthalocyanine molecules self-assemble into columns and form quasi-1D conduction channels for efficient charge transport. With appropriate side groups the material can have both crystalline and liquid crystalline phases. The photoconductivity spectrum, its dependence on the pump-probe delay time and sample temperature suggest the mechanism of as well as the influence of crystallinity on the photoconductivity in metal phthalocyanines.

Book excerpt: "Ga-based III-V materials, such as, GaAs, GaN and AlGaN, have a wide-range of applications in the fields of high-speed, high-temperature, high-power and high-frequency electronic and optoelectronic devices, due to their unique physical properties. This thesis is devoted to the time-resolved characterization of ultrafast, nonequilibrium carrier and phonon dynamics in Ga-based III-V materials and their devices. I present my studies of coherent acoustic phonons (CAPs) and nonlinear optical (NLO) process in GaN and AlGaN single crystals, as well as the ultrafast characterization of epitaxially-grown GaAs meso-structured photodetectors (PDs) and self-switching diodes (SSDs) operating as novel THz emitters and photon sensors. Studies of CAPs and NLO properties in III-Nitrides were accomplished using a femtosecond time-resolved pump-probe spectroscopy. We have experimentally investigated the generation, propagation and detection mechanisms of CAPs and, with the two-side CAPs detection scheme, the intrinsic phonon lifetime was measured to be 80 ns in GaN single crystals at room temperature. The NLO properties of AlGaN single crystals were studied by means of a multi-photon absorption (MPA) technique. My research shows that AlGaN exhibits a large nonlinear correlation factor, with a strong, 310-fs-wide correlation peak. Furthermore, our analysis of the correlation peak amplitude on the pump wavelength allowed us to demonstrate that its spectral dependence agreed very well with the Sheik-Bahae and Hutchings theory for the two-photon absorption (TPA) process. The latter indicates that the TPA process in AlGaN sample in our experiment consisting of one pump and one second-harmonic generation (SHG) of probe photons. I further report optical characterization of a novel PD device based on epitaxially-grown, single crystal GaAs. Our freestanding PD features an extremely low dark current of only 2×10−9 A and responsivity of 4.4 mA/W at 30 V. Its photon detection efficiency is ~ 7%. The time-domain electro-optical sampling (EOS) measurement results show that the PD has an ultrafast ~ 310 fs photoresponse, corresponding to a bandwidth of 1.4 THz. With a double-pulse optical excitation, the PD was tested for successful operation under ~ 1 THz clock rate. All the above properties make it a device-of-choice for future high-speed, high repetition rate, low power consumption optoelectronic application. GaAs-based SSDs have already shown their unique performance in microwave harvest and are predicted to be high-efficient THz emitters. We present here, for the first time, the time-resolved transient THz radiation signal generated by a photo-excited and biased SSD. The signal exhibits ~730 fs full-width-at-half-maximum (FWHM), corresponding to a 0.5 THz bandwidth burst"--Pages ix-x.

A number of other one-atom-thick material structures have been discovered and studied. Industrially applicable technologies for these structures are currently under active development. In spite of enormous research in the area of devices based on graphene, the number of extensive review publications on THz devices based on graphene is small. This review volume would fill the gap. Researchers and engineers working in the fields of electronics and plasmonics can use it to understand the influence of plasmonics on device performance. The book can be also be used as a required text for doctorate courses and as a supplementary material for postgraduate courses. The material presented in the book is reviewed in detail in Chapter 1. Chapter 2 discusses the electronic and plasmonic properties of graphene and heterostructures based on graphene for all devices. Chapters 3–7 focus on the concepts of detectors and emitters with a special emphasis on plasmonic enhancement of those devices as well as on population inversion and lasing.

Book excerpt: The reader will find here a timely update on new THz sources and detection schemes as well as concrete applications to the detection of Explosives and CBRN. Included is a method to identify hidden RDX-based explosives (pure and plastic ones) in the frequency domain study by Fourier Transformation, which has been complemented by the demonstration of improvement of the quality of the images captured commercially available THz passive cameras. The presented examples show large potential for the detection of small hidden objects at long distances (6-10 m). Complementing the results in the short-wavelength range, laser spectroscopy with a mid-infrared, room temperature, continuous wave, DFB laser diode and high performance DFB QCL have been demonstrated to offer excellent enabling sensor technologies for environmental monitoring, medical diagnostics, industrial and security applications. From the new source point of view a number of systems have been presented - From superconductors to semiconductors, e.g. Detection of Terahertz Waves from Superconducting Bi2Sr2CaCu2O8+δ Intrinsic Josephson Junctions. The quest for a compact room temperature THz source and the recent advances in high power mid-IR QCLs lead to the development of a semiconductor THz source based on intracavity difference frequency generation. Furthermore, alternative electrically pumped THz sources based on the high emission efficiency predicted for polaritonic states in the ultra-strong coupling regime led to the demonstration of electroluminescent devices. Finally, antipolaritons in dispersive media were discussed and different aspects of the interaction of THz radiation with biomatter were presented.
