Book excerpt: Excerpt from Types of Ethical Theory, Vol. 1Natnradeorum, i. 8. 3, adeemed; it blindness if any one professed a different vision from my own, and never suspected that'it might be due to' a far-sightedness'which reached a zone beyond, and fetched in the modifying lights of other relations. It is no wonder then that, in skimming over my notes of work in'those di5[ tant years, I seem to be communin'g with some tight-swathed logical prig, in whose jerky confidence and angular mimicry of life I am humbled to recognise the image of myself. If any one believes the fault to be purely personal and in no way chargeable on the system of thought, I shall not resist the imputation; certainly he can select, from' the records of the same school, many examples of true modesty and reverence. But unless the old tradition is wholly illusory, there must be some average coexistence 'of the 'moral with the intellectual phenomenon though it may still be doubted whether the doctrine plays the part of cause or of efl'ect to the objectionable temper.About the PublisherForgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: A synthesis of the lifelong thinking of British theologian philosopher JAMES MARTINEAU (1805-1900), this astonishing work, written when he was 80 and published in 1885, continues to offer important insight into the borderlands between faith and reason. A devout champion of Christianity, Martineau was also one of the first religious thinkers to recognize the import of Darwin's theory of evolution, and here, he interprets and applies ethics-which he defines as "the doctrine of human character"-in a world undergoing a radical paradigm shift. In Volume I, Martineau examines the philosophies of Plato, Descartes, Malebranche, Spinoza, and Comte and explores concepts of how we know what we know, how we can interpret knowledge, and what separates truth from fact.

Book excerpt: Excerpt from Types of Ethical Theory, Vol. 1 Still more, if, following up this experience, I have then gone with him through the series of his writings, and fallen in chronologically with the turns and openings of his thought, I have insensibly gained the key to his final mysteries, and, having passed through the intermediate dialects, can now construe the new language by the old. Nay, I confess to having accepted aid from a far more commonplace commentary on the difficulties of an authors work, viz. the realisation of his personal characteristics, his human relations, his preponderant sympathies, and the study especially of the transitions of his thought and the testing crises of his life. Intellectual pride and self-ignorance alone can blind us to the fact that systems of philosophical opinion grow from the mind's instinctive effort to unify by sufficient reason, and justify by intelligible pleas, its own deepest affections and admirations. At all events, I attempt no more; and shall not hesitate, therefore, to touch upon one or two of the personal experiences, to which these volumes owe their chief features. When I first woke up, before and during my College life, to the interest of moral and metaphysical speculations, I carried into them, from previous training for the profession of civil engineer, a store of exclusively scientific conceptions, rendered familiar in the elementary study of mathematics, mechanics, and chemistry. Small as it was, it was my all, and necessarily dictated the only rules of judgment which I could apply. I had nothing to take with me into logical and ethical problems but the maxims and postulates of physical knowledge; and as the instructions of the philosophical classroom, excellent of their kind, moved strictly within the same limits, I was inevitably shut up in the habit of interpreting the human phenomena by the analogy of external nature. Book excerpt: Excerpt from An Introductory Study of Ethics The study of conduct which is here offered to students and teachers of philosophy was begun with the intention of furnishing simply a plain statement of the existing ethical' situation, by which I mean an analysis of the moral problem and a definition of the several types of ethical theory. But it was found impossible to make a plain state ment without adopting a point of view for the definition of the problem and the theories in question. And in the search for a satisfactory point of view I have been led to a more or less independent reconstruction of the situation as a whole. In a study like ethics, where nothing can be uttered which has not been in a measure foreshadowed, it is difficult to know how far one has succeeded in really contributing to the discussion; yet I hope that the following pages may be found not only useful to students beginning the study but of interest to those already familiar with its problems. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Handbook of Ethical Theory WE are all amply provided with moral maxims, which we hold with more or less confidence, but an insight into their significance is not attained without reflection and some serious effort. Yet, surely, in a field in which there are so many differences of opinion, clearness of insight and breadth of view are eminently desirable. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Science of Ethics, Vol. 1: General Ethics Of modern Scholastic writers the author is most in debted to Professors Meyer and Cathrein, to Rev. Joseph Rickaby, Taparelli, Schififini, and Rev. Dr. Walter mcdonald, Maynooth College, whose treatises on Ethics have been of immense help to him in the preparation of his work. His most grateful thanks are due to the Rev. John Waters, b.a., of Clonliffe College, for his kindness in reading this book, and for very many valuable criticisms and suggestions. Father Waters' wide and minute acquaintance with the writings of St. Thomas Aquinas was always at the author's disposal in the difficult task of discovering and comparing the various references made by St. Thomas to any special Ethical question, references often occurring in places very wide apart, and under unpromising titles - titles apparently outside the, subject under discussion. Thanks are also due to those gentlemen who so kindly undertook the tedious and un interesting task of proof-reading, and to many others also for help given of various kinds. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Types of Ethical Theory, Vol. 2 By unanimous agreement, the whole sphere of things was competed for by these sole claimants; and to adjust their respective rights constituted the great problem of the Hellenic schools. While Zeno and Parmenides put all their faith in the real ontological ground of the universe, and disparaged phenomena except as the manifestation of this, Protagoras made phenomena every thing, and denied that they opened a way to any ulterior region; and Plato and Aristotle vindicated, though in different ways, a place for both, and sought to define the relation between them. But, under every variety of doctrine, this twofold distribution, - into that which ever ts and that which transiently appears, - was assumed as exhaustive and ultimate. It was moreover omnipresent, running through the whole realm of space and time, and reappearing in all objects.
