Book excerpt: A mother finds out her son is gay; a daughter finds out her two mothers are lesbians; a niece stumbles upon the body of her dead uncle dressed in his wife’s sarong kebaya; and an old man’s nascent feelings for a Filipino maid lead him back to his suppressed art. "The Man Who Wore His Wife’s Sarong", Suchen Christine Lim’s short stories of the unsung, unsaid and uncelebrated in Singapore, delve beneath the sunlit island’s prosperity and coded decorum. Her characters chip away prejudice and sculpt it into acceptance of the other. Previously published in part as "The Lies that Build a Marriage" (shortlisted for the Singapore Literature Prize 2008), this new collection contains five additional stories.

Book excerpt: Among a growing number of ethnographies of eastern Indonesia that deal with cosmology, exchange, and kinship, From a Shattered Sun is the first to address squarely issues originally broached by Edmund Leach and Claude Lévi-Strauss concerning the relation between hierarchy and equality in asymmetric systems of marriage. On the basis of extensive fieldwork in the Tamimbar islands, Susan McKinnon analyzes the simultaneous presence of both closed, asymmetric cycles and open, asymmetric pathways of alliance--of both egalitarian and hierarchical configurations. In addition, Tamimbarese society is marked by the existence of multiple, differentially valued forms of marriage, affiliation, and residence. Rather than seeing these various forms as analytically separable types, McKinnon demonstrates that it is only by viewing them as integrally related--in terms of culturally specific understandings of "houses," gender, and exchange--that one can perceive the processes through which hierarchy and equality are created.

Book excerpt: The riveting true story of two sisters’ journey to the Islamic State and the father who tries to bring them home Two Sisters, by the international bestselling author Åsne Seierstad, tells the unforgettable story of a family divided by faith. Sadiq and Sara, Somali immigrants raising a family in Norway, one day discover that their teenage daughters, Leila and Ayan, have vanished—and are en route to Syria to aid the Islamic State. Seierstad’s riveting account traces the sisters’ journey from secular, social democratic Norway to the front lines of the war in Syria, and follows Sadiq’s harrowing attempt to find them. Employing the same mastery of narrative suspense she brought to The Bookseller of Kabul and One of Us, Seierstad puts the problem of radicalization into painfully human terms, using instant messages and other primary sources to reconstruct a family’s crisis from the inside. Eventually, she takes us into the hellscape of the Syrian civil war, as Sadiq risks his life in pursuit of his daughters, refusing to let them disappear into the maelstrom—even after they marry ISIS fighters. Two Sisters is a relentless thriller and a feat of reporting with profound lessons about belief, extremism, and the meaning of devotion.

Book excerpt: Nuaulu people on the Indonesian island of Seram have displayed remarkable linguistic and cultural resilience over a period of 50 years. In 1970 their language and traditional culture was widely considered ‘endangered.’ Despite this, Nuaulu have not only maintained their animist identity and shown a robust ability to reproduce 'traditional' ritual performances, but have exhibited both population growth and increasing assertiveness in the projection of their interests through the politics of the ‘New Indonesia’. This book examines how kinship organization and marriage patterns have responded to some of these challenges, and suggests that the retention of core institutions of descent and exchange are the consequence of population growth, which in turn has enabled ritual reproduction, and thereby effectively maintained a distinct identity in relation to the surrounding majority culture. Low conversion rates to other religions, and the political consequences of Indonesian ‘reformasi’, have also contributed to a situation in which, despite changes in the material basis of their lives, Nuaulu have projected a strong independent identity and organisation. In terms of debates around kinship in eastern Indonesia, this book argues that older notions of prescriptive social structure are fundamentally flawed. Kinship institutions are real enough, but the distinction between genealogical and classificatory relations is often unimportant; all that matters in the end is that the arrangements entered into between clans and houses permit both biological and social reproduction, and that the latter ultimately serves the former. An important contribution to the study of the peoples of Eastern Indonesia, it highlights a 'good news story' about the successful retention of a traditional way of life in an area that has had a troubled recent history. It will be of interest to academics in various fields of anthropology, in particular the study of kinship and Southeast Asian societies.

Book excerpt: In her debut collection, Monica Sok uses poetry to reshape a family’s memory about the Khmer Rouge regime—memory that is both real and imagined—according to a child of refugees. Driven by myth-making and fables, the poems examine the inheritance of the genocide and the profound struggles of searing grief and PTSD. Though the landscape of Cambodia is always present, it is the liminal space, the in-betweenness of diaspora, in which younger generations must reconcile their history and create new rituals. A Nail the Evening Hangs On seeks to reclaim the Cambodian narrative with tenderness and an imagination that moves towards wholeness and possibility.

Book excerpt: The beloved New York Times bestselling author reflects on home, family, friendships and writing in this deeply personal collection of essays. "The elegance of Patchett’s prose is seductive and inviting: with Patchett as a guide, readers will really get to grips with the power of struggles, failures, and triumphs alike." —Publisher's Weekly “Any story that starts will also end.” As a writer, Ann Patchett knows what the outcome of her fiction will be. Life, however, often takes turns we do not see coming. Patchett ponders this truth in these wise essays that afford a fresh and intimate look into her mind and heart. At the center of These Precious Days is the title essay, a surprising and moving meditation on an unexpected friendship that explores “what it means to be seen, to find someone with whom you can be your best and most complete self.” When Patchett chose an early galley of actor and producer Tom Hanks’ short story collection to read one night before bed, she had no idea that this single choice would be life changing. It would introduce her to a remarkable woman—Tom’s brilliant assistant Sooki—with whom she would form a profound bond that held monumental consequences for them both. A literary alchemist, Patchett plumbs the depths of her experiences to create gold: engaging and moving pieces that are both self-portrait and landscape, each vibrant with emotion and rich in insight. Turning her writer’s eye on her own experiences, she transforms the private into the universal, providing us all a way to look at our own worlds anew, and reminds how fleeting and enigmatic life can be. From the enchantments of Kate DiCamillo’s children’s books (author of The Beatryce Prophecy) to youthful memories of Paris; the cherished life gifts given by her three fathers to the unexpected influence of Charles Schultz’s Snoopy; the expansive vision of Eudora Welty to the importance of knitting, Patchett connects life and art as she illuminates what matters most. Infused with the author’s grace, wit, and warmth, the pieces in These Precious Days resonate deep in the soul, leaving an indelible mark—and demonstrate why Ann Patchett is one of the most celebrated writers of our time.

Book excerpt: In this six-eBook bind-up of the complete On the Runway series from bestselling author Melody Carlson, sisters Paige and Erin Forrester find themselves traveling the world for their fashion TV show … but their very different personalities often make each episode an adventure in itself. Contains: Premiere: Paige has always been outgoing and fashion-obsessed, while her sister, Erin, would rather stay behind a camera in comfy jeans and a tee. But after Paige’s fashion “helps” find their way onto the local news, the sisters’ passions collide when they are offered their own fashion TV show. It soon becomes clear this unlikely partnership has plenty of room for success—and even more for failure. Catwalk: The high ratings of the sisters’ On the Runway show lands them a ticket to New York Fashion Week. Paige is determined to get the attention of top designers, but her newfound fame threatens to go to her head. Meanwhile, Erin wants to help promote the work of eco designers, but struggles to be taken seriously. Rendezvous: Paige and Erin are ready to take their show on location to Paris. Unfortunately, it doesn’t take long for their intentions to get lost in translation. An unplanned week of filming at a model’s family estate leads to romance, jealousy, and surprises. Spotlight: When Paige and Erin head to London, both get a reception to remember. Bombarded by crazed fans and the interrogations of the infamous British paparazzi, the sisters know that their lives have changed—big time. Star treatment has its perks, but before long both girls are stretched to a breaking point. Glamour: Paige’s engagement to designer Dylan Marceau shocks the fashion world. Although Paige appears to be happy, Erin wonders if it’s really just a desire for attention and publicity. At the same time, Erin is feeling pressure from her ex, Blake, to take their friendship to a romantic level. As the sisters prepare to film in the Bahamas, they also must deal with growing turmoil on set. Ciao: A trip to Milan might be the break both Paige and Erin need, but things only seem to get more complicated once they land in Italy. Paige’s on-again, off-again romance with Dylan, combined with a new director for On the Runway, leaves Erin with more work on the show. Just when Erin can’t take any more, she discovers a secret that could crush Paige. And doing the right thing could not only hurt her sister, it might end their show for good.

Book excerpt: The Sisters Islands and Pulau Senang: two satellite islands off the coast of Singapore, small but rich in story. This volume brings together two remarkable plays by Jean Tay, Sisters and Senang, which explore these two islands through turbulent events in the 1960s. Sisters: The Untold Stories of the Sisters Islands blends a real-life murder with creation myth. The play alternates between two stories: one of Mina and Lina, the two sisters upon which the myth of the Sisters Islands is supposedly based; and the other of the shocking case in 1965 of Jenny Cheok, killed by her boyfriend Sunny Ang, which also involved her half-sister Irene. Senang covers the prison riots on Pulau Senang in 1963. The island was used for a bold experiment, led by Superintendent Daniel Dutton, an Irishman who believed he could reform the inmates through labour, and abolished the use of arms to police them. This is one man’s attempt to create a utopian penal colony, which tragically led to his violent end. “Jean Tay is one of the most gifted playwrights I have come across in years.” —Gaurav Kripalani, Artistic Director, Singapore Repertory Theatre

Book excerpt: Adam Statkus and his mother are new to Falcon Ridge, a dairy farming community in rural Australia. Within days of their arrival Adam discovers the body of a girl buried in a silage pit. Is it one of the teenagers who went missing from the area six years ago? And who wrote the diary that Adam finds in the old farmhouse? The discovery of the murder affects the lives of many of the locals. Some are willing to do anything to get their hands on the missing pages. With the help of the diary, Adam pieces together the mystery of the body in the pit, despite the threat to his life. Murderer's Thumb is a marvellous evocation of a close-knit community trying to cope with a mysterious crime against one, or perhaps two, of their local teenagers. It is a novel that speaks to young and old about what happens when outsiders uncover secrets that have been hidden for too long. Beth Montgomery has an enviable prose style of perfect pitch. She has created a cast of distinctive characters - the idiosyncratic locals, a boy sleuth who also has to deal with his strange parents, and a feisty teenage girl whose voice is compelling. Murderer's Thumb is a page-turner that will haunt you.

Book excerpt: Young, beautiful and wealthy, widow Charlotte Macleod, leaves Batavia in the 1850s and returns to Singapore for the English education of her two young sons. She is determined not to be drawn back into a secret affair with Chinese triad-member Zhen. Drawing on the real-life historical personalities of the time, Dawn Farnham deftly mixes fact and fiction to paint a vivid portrait of mid-nineteenth century Singapore at a time when triads, piracy and crime were rife.
