Doris McCleary McFadden, age ninety-five, after reading The Joys of Being and Becoming said, "This book is about Resilience." The Joys of Being and Becoming The Secret Formula of Joy Revealed by Rose Marie Page Yerka The Joys of Being and Becoming is a memoir from the life of a young girl's journey to maturity. It is a four-part journey of transformation and wholeness. From a fifty-year journal, the author becomes a writer by writing. She felt called to write the story and something new inside was born and healing came upon hearing a voice. "I have told you this so that my Joy may be in you and your Joy may be Complete" (John 15:11). Seeking truth, finding faith, she developed self-acceptance and maturity over time. A treasure hunt by digging deeper helped bring her the capacity for healing in the process of being and becoming more passionate to become an influencer. A legacy wrapped in truth, brings love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness and self-control. The secret of joy is revealed through the stages and the struggles of a life well lived. She has learned to seek joy and not happiness for her children, grandchildren, great-grandchildren and the next generation. "Life by Design" is becoming a generational thinker. My grandmother's story from more than a hundred years ago revealed to me that I am to live my life backward with the end result in mind to impact the next generation. It built a character of resilience that will teach others how to endure. I am an answer to prayer.

Book excerpt: Love stories formed a major part of the classical short story genre in China from as early as the eighth century, when men of letters began to write about romantic encounters. In later centuries, such stories provided inspiration for several new literary genres. While much scholarly attention has been focused on the short story of both the medieval and late imperial eras, comparatively little work has been attempted on the interim stage, the Song and Yuan dynasties, which spanned some five hundred years from the tenth to the fourteenth centuries. Yet this was a crucial developmental period for many forms of narrative literature—so much so that any understanding of late imperial narrative should be informed by the earlier tradition. The first study of its kind in English, The Chinese Love Story from the Tenth to the Fourteenth Century traces the development of the love story throughout this important yet overlooked era. Using Tang dynasty stories as a point of comparison, Alister D. Inglis examines and appraises key new themes, paying special attention to period hallmarks, gender portrayal, and textuality. Inglis demonstrates that, contrary to received scholarly wisdom, this was a highly innovative period during which writers and storytellers laid a fertile foundation for the literature of late imperial China.

Book excerpt: An exploration of the way Adam and Eve introduced the idea of love into the world, and how they continue to shape our deepest feelings about relationships, family, and togetherness. Since antiquity, Adam and Eve have stood at the center of every conversation about men and women. Yet instead of celebrating them, history has blamed them for bringing sin, deceit, and death into the world. In this fresh retelling of their story, Bruce Feiler travels from the Garden of Eden in Iraq to the Sistine Chapel in Rome, discovering how Adam and Eve should be hailed as exemplars of a long-term, healthy, resilient relationship. At a time of discord and fear over the strength of our social fabric, Feiler shows how history's first couple can again be role models for unity, forgiveness, and love.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Roy was Judge Roy Bean, the infamous, notorious real-life jurist whose life has been the source of biographies, novels, plays, and films. Lillie was Lillie Langtry, the celebrated "Jersey Lily" of the British stage. They never met, but they wrote letters. From very different backgrounds, living vastly different lives, separated by an ocean and most of a continent, these two unforgettable people share something unique in the "lost letters" of this novel. For many years Bean, the cantankerous, self-styled arbiter of rough frontier justice, wrote fan letters to the beautiful actress across the sea; occasionally, she wrote back. He even renamed the town in which he lived Langtry in her honor. And they would have met, if Bean had not died shortly before Lillie, after years of this strange but poignant correspondence, finally kept her promise to visit her distant admirer. In Roy & Lillie, a story of letters lost and at long last found, Loren D. Estleman, with all the nuance and narrative skill that has won him multiple Spur Awards, brings to life an untold chapter of transatlantic love that is as tender as it is unique. Book excerpt: This volume assembles a wide range of scholars and critical methodologies to suggest multiple interpretations of the vital connection linking literary imagination and the human experience of reality. In varying ways and with varying intent, it speaks to the essential experience of participating in imaginative worlds, offering different accounts of how language signifies in real and imaginary contexts, and why people read and write rival realities. Taking as point of departure Aristotle's definition of poesis, it questions how literature stands in both mimetic and transformative relation to the givens of history, reworking them within the order of imagination and desire. Through historical, linguistic, and literary analysis of texts spanning nine centuries, it demonstrates how though it is irreducible to reality, literary imagination conveys something very real about the human response to the world, including the knowledge and power proper to such experience; neither history nor lie, it discloses a reality purged of extraneous detail, making what is essential to human experience more concentrated and dramatic. Thus made apparent is that literature and history do not exclude each other, but inform, correct, and supplement each other, underscoring the complexities of thought and imagination.

Book excerpt: The true story of the love of a couple whose marriage spanned 61 years, The Love Story of Papa and Mama Knopp will show you how the love of two people can affect the world around them. Papa and Mama themselves contributed most of the material through their words and Papa’s writings and recordings. They met and married after World War II, and as a young pastor, Papa struggled to provide for their growing brood. Those struggles in raising nine boys stretched their faith and endurance and taught them self-sacrifice, which was later passed on to the church family. Their children called them Papa and Mama, and some of the antics of those nine boys are described in the book. The people in their church also called them Papa and Mama, and they came to be known as Papa and Mama to thousands of people. Most of these people met them in their home in Staunton, Virginia, where they were inspired by the Knopps’ family life, their love for others, their humility, and their faith. And most of those people have moved away and live around the country and even around the world today. The lives of the Knopps have therefore had an impact on the world.

God lovingly pursues humankind in relationship that is robustly satisfying and salvific. Like many relationships, God's love story with God's people is both transcendent and tragic, messy and mercy-filled, raw and redemptive. Not merely a series of events relegated to the past, God's love story is an ongoing, present phenomenon--a salvation-relationship into which God invites all peoples to (collectively) be the spouse of God.
