Book Synopsis The Routledge Companion to Music and Modern Literature by : Rachael Durkin
Download or read book The Routledge Companion to Music and Modern Literature written by Rachael Durkin and published by Taylor & Francis. This book was released on 2022-05-26 with total page 637 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Modern literature has always been obsessed by music. It cannot seem to think about itself without obsessing about music. And music has returned the favour. The Routledge Companion to Music and Modern Literature addresses this relationship as a significant contribution to the burgeoning field of word and music studies. The 37 chapters within consider the partnership through four lenses—the universal, opera and literature, musical and literary forms, and popular music and literature—and touch upon diverse and pertinent themes for our modern times, ranging from misogyny to queerness, racial inequality to the claimed universality of whiteness. This Companion therefore offers an essential resource for all who try to decode the musico-literary exchange.
Book Synopsis Two Hundred Years of Pushkin by : Joe Andrew
Download or read book Two Hundred Years of Pushkin written by Joe Andrew and published by Rodopi. This book was released on 2003 with total page 242 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Pushkin's status as Russia's national poet rests as much on the breadth of his cultural influence as on the intrinsic quality of his works. Pushkin's Legacy reflects in various ways the areas in which this influence has been felt. Part I considers some of the key factors in defining Pushkin for posterity, in particular the crucial role played by the critic Belinskii and the problematics of periodising Pushkin. Part II examines the richness of Pushkin's poetics, including the ways in which his work challenged the established boundaries between poetry and prose. Part III examines Russian music's debt to Pushkin and vice versa: Russian music's role in popularising his works. Part IV examines Pushkin's influence abroad via studies of his influence on Mérimée and Henry James and, on a more personal level, through his descendants in England. Pushkin's Legacy offers a variety of approaches to Pushkin and his oeuvre and to the nature of his complex impact on Russian and European culture. Pushkin's Legacy is the third volume devoted to Pushkin to be published in the SSLP series, under the general title Two Hundred Years of Pushkin. It follows volume I, Pushkin's Secret: Russian Writers Reread and Rewrite Pushkin, and volume II, Alexander Pushkin: Myth and Monument.
Book Synopsis Montaging Pushkin by : Alexandra Smith
Download or read book Montaging Pushkin written by Alexandra Smith and published by BRILL. This book was released on 2006-01-01 with total page 362 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Montaging Pushkin offers for the first time a coherent view of Pushkin’s legacy to Russian twentieth-century poetry, giving many new insights. Pushkin is shown to be a Russian forerunner of Baudelaire. Furthermore it is argued that the rise of the Russian and European novel largely changed the ways Russian poets have looked at themselves and at poetic language; that novelisation of poetry is detectable in the major works of poetry that engaged in a creative dialogue with Pushkin, and that polyphonic lyric has been achieved. Alexandra Smith locates significant examples of Pushkin’s cinematographic cognition of reality, suggesting that such dynamic descriptions of Petersburg helped create a highly original animated image of the city as comic apocalypse, which followers of Pushkin appropriated very successfully even as far as the late twentieth century. Montaging Pushkin will be of interest to all students of Russian poetry, as well as specialists in literary theory, European studies and the history of ideas.

Book Synopsis The Composer-pianists by : Robert Rimm
Download or read book The Composer-pianists written by Robert Rimm and published by Hal Leonard Corporation. This book was released on 2002 with total page 347 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "The recordings made by Marc-Andre Hamelin in recent years have cast new light on an extraordinary group of composers - Alkan, Busoni, Feinberg, Godowsky, Medtner, Rachmaninov, Scriabin, and Sorabji - whose works heralded a Golden Age of virtuosic writing for the piano." "The Eight, as author Robert Rimm has termed these composer-pianists, have much in common, traits shared in our own age with Marc-Andre Hamelin, their foremost interpreter. For all their evident differences of age, nationality, and philosophy, they each created music of unprecedented ingenuity - often complex and of immense scale - that stretched the limits of the piano's capabilities. And all were genuine virtuosos with the technical resources to play these demanding works in public." "The volume includes rare photographs and concludes with an extensive bibliography, listings of the complete solo piano works of The Eight, and discographies of their solo piano recordings. In exploring the art of those who knew their instrument both as composers and as pianists, this book serves, in the words of pianist Stephen Hough, "both as a fascinating, exhaustive study of the riches of the past and as a stimulating inspiration for the future.""--BOOK JACKET.Title Summary field provided by Blackwell North America, Inc. Book Synopsis Two Hundred Years of Pushkin, Volume I by :
Download or read book Two Hundred Years of Pushkin, Volume I written by and published by BRILL. This book was released on 2021-12-28 with total page 225 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: From his earliest publications onwards Pushkin has been the source of inspiration, and imitation, for other writers, as well as composers, painters and, more recently, film-makers. This book seeks to explore the different relationship his followers have sought with the ‘founding father’ of modern Russian culture. Pushkin’s Secret: Russian Writers Reread and Rewrite Pushkin takes a variety of approaches. Some contributors to the collection trace the way Pushkin’s works provided the template for the characters and stories which were produced in the first decades after his untimely death in 1837. Others reveal the impact the myths surrounding Pushkin’s tragic life were used (and abused) by followers, as well as governments of various hues. Yet other studies explore the very precise ways Pushkin’s successors used his texts as source material for their own works. ‘Pushkin’s Secret’: Russian Writers Reread and Rewrite Pushkin offers a series of fascinating insights into the impact that Alexander Pushkin has had on Russian culture over the last 200 years. Pushkin’s Secret: Russian Writers Reread and Rewrite Pushkin will be followed by two further volumes devoted to Pushkin within the SSLP series, Pushkin: Myth and Monument and Pushkin’s Legacy.

Book Synopsis A Double Garland by : Thomas P. Hodge
Download or read book A Double Garland written by Thomas P. Hodge and published by Northwestern University Press. This book was released on 2000 with total page 362 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Thomas P. Hodge has produced the first literary-historical study of the art-song enterprise in Russia's Golden Age. A Double Garland investigates the interrelationship of poetry and music in Russia, specifically the relations between poets and composers, from 1800 to 1850. Hodge focuses on three major composers of art songs: Alyab'ev, Verstovskii, and Glinka. He surveys their choices of text and, after some preliminary metrical and structural analysis, proceeds to a detailed consideration of the dynamics of poet/composer interaction from various points of view. Hodge presents both the major and minor poets of this period in the context of Russian musical life. Based on extensive archival research, this study will appeal to specialists in Russian poetry and musicologists.
Book Synopsis Greetings, Pushkin! by : Jonathan Brooks Platt
Download or read book Greetings, Pushkin! written by Jonathan Brooks Platt and published by University of Pittsburgh Press. This book was released on 2016-07-10 with total page 336 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In 1937, the Soviet Union mounted a national celebration commemorating the centenary of poet Alexander Pushkin’s death. Though already a beloved national literary figure, the scale and feverish pitch of the Pushkin festival was unprecedented. Greetings, Pushkin! presents the first in-depth study of this historic event and follows its manifestations in art, literature, popular culture, education, and politics, while also examining its philosophical underpinnings. Jonathan Brooks Platt looks deeply into the motivations behind the Soviet glorification of a long-dead poet—seemingly at odds with the October Revolution’s radical break with the past. He views the Pushkin celebration as a conjunction of two opposing approaches to time and modernity: monumentalism, which points to specific moments and individuals as the origin point for cultural narratives, and eschatology, which glorifies ruptures in the chain of art or thought and the destruction of canons. In the midst of the Great Purge, the Pushkin jubilee was a critical element in the drive toward a nationalist discourse that attempted to unify and subsume the disparate elements of the Soviet Union, supporting the move to “socialism in one country.”
Book Synopsis The Routledge Handbook of Popular Music and Politics of the Balkans by : Catherine Baker
Download or read book The Routledge Handbook of Popular Music and Politics of the Balkans written by Catherine Baker and published by Taylor & Francis. This book was released on 2024-07-10 with total page 857 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Routledge Handbook of Popular Music and Politics of the Balkans is a comprehensive overview of major topics, established debates and new directions in the study of popular music and politics in this region. The vibrant growth of this subject area since the 1990s has been intertwined with the region’s political and socio-economic transformations, including the collapse of state socialism in much of the region, the break-up of Yugoslavia, the advent of neoliberal capitalism, the rise of Romani activism, the complex politics of ‘Europeanization’ before and after the global financial crisis, and the region’s relationship to the European Union border regime. The handbook illustrates the wide range of disciplines and methods that contribute to this field’s interdisciplinary dialogue and highlights emerging approaches such as the study of Black diasporas in the region, popular music’s links with LGBTQ+ communities, and the impact of digital technologies on musical cultures. This volume will benefit specialist researchers, tutors creating or refreshing courses on popular music in the region, and students interested in these topics, especially those who are at the point of developing their own independent research projects.
