Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The immune system is composed of two main parts: the innate immune system and the adaptive immune system. The innate immune system is the first line of defense and responds immediately to any foreign invader that enters the body. This system is made up of cells like neutrophils, macrophages, and natural killer cells, which quickly identify and attack the foreign invaders. The adaptive immune system, on the other hand, takes more time to mount a response. This system is designed to recognize specific invaders and create a targeted response to fight them off. The adaptive immune system consists of two types of cells: B cells and T cells. B cells produce antibodies, which can recognize and neutralize specific foreign invaders like bacteria and viruses. T cells, on the other hand, can directly attack and destroy cells that have been infected with a virus or other pathogens.

This book was released on 1999-05-13 with total page 722 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Every aspect of immune function and host defense is dependent upon a proper supply and balance of nutrients. Severe malnutrition can cause significant alteration in immune response, but even subclinical deficits may be associated with an impaired immune response, and an increased risk of infection. Infectious diseases have accounted for more off-duty days during major wars than combat wounds or nonbattle injuries. Combined stressors may reduce the normal ability of soldiers to resist pathogens, increase their susceptibility to biological warfare agents, and reduce the effectiveness of vaccines intended to protect them. There is also a concern with the inappropriate use of dietary supplements. This book, one of a series, examines the impact of various types of stressors and the role of specific dietary nutrients in maintaining immune function of military personnel in the field. It reviews the impact of compromised nutrition status on immune function; the interaction of health, exercise, and stress (both physical and psychological) in immune function; and the role of nutritional supplements and newer biotechnology methods reported to enhance immune function. The first part of the book contains the committee's workshop summary and evaluation of ongoing research by Army scientists on immune status in special forces troops, responses to the Army's questions, conclusions, and recommendations. The rest of the book contains papers contributed by workshop speakers, grouped under such broad topics as an introduction to what is known about immune function, the assessment of immune function, the effect of nutrition, and the relation between the many and varied stresses encountered by military personnel and their effect on health.

Book excerpt: Why do some people have a less difficult time with COVID-19, while others end up in the hospital, fighting for their lives? Why do some escape being infected by the virus altogether? The strength of a person's immune system is one answer. There are simple, logical things we can do to strengthen our immune systems against new diseases like COVID-19. Doctors McComsey and Myers are at the forefront of SARS-CoV-2 research and have written a book that outlines exactly what we all can do. Physicians and scientists have recently discovered a pattern among those experiencing the best COVID-19 outcomes: these people have optimal amounts of two key micronutrients, vitamin D and vitamin K2. While they don't prevent COVID-19, these two vitamins can help your immune system better deal with the disease. Recent studies show that lung damage and thromboembolism, two of the most serious COVID-19 outcomes, have been linked to deficiencies in vitamins D and K2. In Simplifying the COVID Puzzle, the authors simply and clearly explore how vitamins D and K2 act as a low-risk, proactive supplement combination.

Book excerpt: One of the New York Times' most popular journalists presents groundbreaking scientific news about marriage. And, surprise: It's good news. We've all heard the statistic: Fifty percent of marriages end in divorce. It's enough to make many couples give up when the going gets rough, thinking that's what everybody else does. But what if it weren't true? What if, in fact, it's not only possible but often easier than you think to save a seemingly troubled relationship? These are the questions Tara Parker-Pope asked herself after her own divorce. An investigative journalist on the health and wellness beat, she turned to some of the top biologists, neuroscientists, psychologists, and other scientists for the facts about marriage and divorce. Those facts were more positive and provocative than she'd ever expected, and For Better offers page after page of astonishing, eye-opening good news. Parker-Pope presents the science behind why some marriages work and others don't; the biology behind why some spouses cheat and others remain faithful; the best diagnostic tools created by the most cutting-edge psychologists to assess the probability of success in getting married, staying married, or remarrying. There are questionnaires to uncover potentially damaging hidden attitudes toward spouses. There are tools to show the impact of routine, fresh activity and how small adjustments can make a huge difference. Tara Parker- Pope's genius is for exploring the science behind the big issues that affect our lives every day and translating that science into advice that we can use-every day. For Better is the definitive guide to the most profound relationship of our lives.
